There are actually a ton more differences than just the air unit and padding. The SB dunk received a huge design overhaul in 2011 which is why on most dunk SBs the tongue actually says “dunk low pro” we plan on highlighting all the key differences very soon!!

So it would be better if he did a video with expensive nikes look Jordan’s or any of their shoes that aren’t from filled with air or aren’t running shoes from nike- since nike running shoes are probably the only ones you could trust to be of higher quality- mainly because the broke world records with their top line runners. Spot on. Dunks ARE dumb, and I've been collecting since the early 90's. The observation that they're better served as a template for color ways and collaborations is great, and I couldn't agree more. In the sneaker world, people aren't paying for quality, they're paying for exclusivity, as sneaker culture has always been about one-upsmanship more than anything else. Make anything limited, and people will put value on it for you.

I grew up in the day where you could buy any shoe it was just about if you had the money. But all the shoes were available and there were no such thing as raffles and there were no resellers and I don't ever remember having to line up. It was all about having to choose between all the amazing sneakers in the store. Back then most people could only buy 1 or 2 pairs that would have to last half a year and then when they were worn to death you got another pair or 2 pairs for the next half of the year. Things have changed alot but not for the better. I'm so glad I grew up in the 80's and 90's.

Nike is one of, if not the best, marketing company ever conceived. They've managed to fool the masses into thinking that a shoe could be more than just a shoe, and sell that same mold time and time again while jacking up the prices. I applaud them 👏
@jaad9848
@jaad9848 2 жыл бұрын
I think people are missing the psychology of this. I think the reason they resell for such high amounts for what really is minimal variation is to have a popular shoe with just enough different to "be different" and to have people know the resell value is "high" , ie the point is to "flex" on people so needlessly spending a lot for a little benefit is part of the point.

When i was in high school/college I was obsessed with SB dunks. I think the main appeal for me was that the colorways were really cool and a lot of them were themed off of cool concepts (ferris bueller dunks, marge simpson dunks, etc). Also just the fact that they were rare and no one else at school had them was a part of the appeal. After college (which was 10 years ago) I started liking other shoes more cause every time I threw on a pair of dunks I felt like I was back in high school and I wanted a more grown up look. These things should retail for like $50 - $75, given the cheap materials, cookie cutter design aesthetics, and assembly line construction. I’m sure it costs Nike a small fraction of that to actually make these things, so the retail price is already needlessly inflated to begin with. Nike knows that a lot of people will still happily shell out more than they’re worth, though, so they charge more because they can. These shoes would be like if McDonald’s charged $1 for every single chicken McNugget, and then even greedier goons bought every location out of their entire stock of McNuggets to re-sell them for $3 a McNugget. This is the perfect example of hype and emotional consumerism run amok.

Little bit of background info the Nike dunk “panda” was released in 2021. The last time the panda dunk released was 2011 however it’s incredibly important to mention the 2011 pair has significantly better leather and materials. To simply sum it up the 2021 has poor qualities because Nike intended to mass produce and mass restock these pairs, Nike sees panda dunks the same way as white Air Force 1s, therefore Nike rather sacrifice quality of a color way in order to allow more consumers to own pairs. Logically it makes sense as the colors of this shoe are simple and easy to wear so anyone who isn’t a sneaker head will be incline to purchase this shoe for a certain price tag assuming it’ll be the first and only large sneaker purchase

It's truly sad. With all Nike's emphasis on "Better World" and sustainability, they continue to use this cheapest plasticized leather that turns ugly after half a day of wear. They KNOW that the higher quality full-grain leather has beautiful creasing, but they're after a quick dollar, and the know-nothing sneakerheads have no qualms with it. Nelly only wore his AF-1's once... it wasn't about being fresh, it was because they're ruined after one wear!!

The appeal of dunks (at least for me) is the collaborations and color ways that you pointed out that dunks are a great template for. Dunks tend to have the best collaborations and the most experimental color ways and that’s what people like. For example the bubblegum pack that collaborated with different baseball teams and made some cool shoes (although those were SB so they were made better). But you are right that the resale prices are ridiculous and not worth it, and I don’t get why anyone would pay that much for as plain of a colorway as the pandas that you used except for following trends.

Before Nike started doing huge general releases of the dunks as they became super popular they actually had pretty nice quality. The dunks from just a few years back (2019/2020) that are called SP dunks (special project) where more limited and much nicer leather quality. Would be awesome if you did a comparison with a pair of those.

I used to skate in dunks when the es accel (original ones, not accelerate or anything else) first came off the market because I like chunkier shoes and stitched construction but they didn't last nearly as long as other shoes. Sbs have a good day tongue though so that was nice. They were made better than the regular ones and it would be cool to see a pair of sbs cut in half

I used to skate Nikes before the hypebeast resell era. Dunks were dirt cheap good shoes with a good amount of colors and a simplistic look. If you wanted to get more extreme the prods were the way. Recently bought dunks (retail only). Imo same quality with the hype pricetag. Definitely looks and feels better built than the one he cut open. As someone who's owned a couple pair of dunks both for wearing and skating, I agree, however I've noticed that older dunks, like those that came out in the mid 2000s ish pre 2017? Had wayy better quality and the leather feels a lot better longer. Another issue with dunks is the heel drag, I don't drag my heel across the floor but after a couple wears they drag and wear down quite a bit.

Thank you so much for pointing this out. Dunks ARE a simple shoe dated to the 80’s. I grew up wearing them a lot. And I remember when I needed a pair I could usually go and find a few colors to choose from, pay retail, and leave with a new pair of shoes…while not feeling ripped off. NOW…forget it. I can’t even find a decent Dunk I like because 90% of them are at a INSANE asking price. Only ones that aren’t are old beat up ones or ones that have an ugly af color combo. This shit is DUMB and can’t wait for the Dunk hype to go down so I can get me another pair. I miss wearing em man. Fucking greedy ass hype-nerds trying to take away the good experience of an old-head just wanting to rock a nice pair of classic Dunks. It’s fucking ridiculous.

I appreciate this video because it makes me feel good about not buying Dunks for a long time, mainly due to how fast they sell out and overpriced they become. The last pair I had weren't even leather, but suede and mesh. That was circa 2003 and tbh I loved that pair. My love of the design of these shoes is entirely tied up in sentiment over when they were first released. When I first saw them at summer basketball camp. The primary colorways iconically connected to the top college basketball programs and I always think of dunks as the college counterpart to the respectively "pro" Jordan 1s. A positive of both those lines, not mentioned in this critique, is that they have super comfy tongues. Agree Dunks were never performers, but I always liked the aesthetic. As a lighter-weight basketball player who doesn't mind an utter lack of cushioning, I appreciate the low court feel they offer for hooping. I did have a pair of SB Dunks with Zoom setups, those were actually great for balling.

Prior to the mid 2010s, the Dunk was a shoe nobody wanted and many of the hyped collabs that were popular in the 2000s were selling for under retail. Retro fashion took off a few years back and Nike's marketing of the Dunks was masterful. They got the Dunks on a few runways and then released original colourways back in the mid-2010s in limited supply. This started a small trend. Then they collabed with many artists, sneakers shops, skaters, and celebrities focusing on the Dunks. All releases were limited, even non-collabs. By the late 2010s, Dunks were popular again. Now Nike has taken it a step further. They have released the Panda Dunk (like the ones cut out) in limited supply to keep the demand high... but released them like 5-6 times and even another release shortly. You would think this would kill the hype for the shoe, but instead the Panda Dunk has reached a level of triple white Air Force 1s in terms of popularity with youths in general and not just sneakerheads. It has become that shoe that "all the cool kids are wearing" and may even become a classic shoe that continues to sell out no matter how many shoes they make.

As a former sneakerhead, I can totally see why you'd rip on these. As I've gotten into my late twenties I've drifted away from the bold kinds of sneakers and choose to grab things that are more minimal and wearable every day, kinda like these! Unfortunately when Nike decided to start bringing back the dunks they were seeded out to influencers and retro ones were already being worn by Travis Scott. So the hype went through the roof just as they hoped it would. Oddly enough Gen Z's style (what I assume to be the target market for hype culture currently) is typically far from minimal, so it really makes you think about the concerted effort there must've been to blow these up. I can find a lot of appreciation for dunks and think their subtle differences in shape from the J1 really lend theirselves to being a sweet streetwear staple, but without a general ease of buying them at retail, I probably will never have a pair.

But if you are someone who values quality over all else than nikes may not be for you. @@Jake-ig2kf Real diamonds in general are very inflated because they are all handled trough a cartel which artificially generates limited supply. But with these sneakers the fake and real are both created in basically the same kind of factory in China with the same quality and materials. I don't like boots and do get compliments on my sneakers, but I won't be paying more than 100 unless they are made in Europe with all natural and good quality materials.
