Modern, fan-made trailer for Roman Polanski's 1968 masterpiece, "Rosemary's Baby" - based on the best-selling novel by Ira Levin.
A young couple moves in to an apartment only to be surrounded by peculiar neighbors and occurrences. When the wife becomes mysteriously pregnant, paranoia over the safety of her unborn child begins to control her life.

This film is actually far more depressing than scary. Rosemary is such a nice person who just wants to be a mother and instead every person around her, people she's supposed to be able to trust, strategically dehumanize and betray her and all you can do is stare helplessly.

@@musa-vl6ol Perhaps, but I think it's deeper than that. I think it's actually the reflection of how immoral our society has become, and how evil continually triumphs while goodness is routinely crushed and punished. All these billionaires and politicians who control the world are so egregiously amoral and wicked yet nothing ever stops them. They continue to prosper while good, honest folks continue to suffer. 55 years hasn't changed anything. Look at what the world is today. Millions of people live in fear and are in financial ruin while Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos are making billions off this pandemic. Not to mention the billions the mass media is earning as well. It's truly a scary, awful, helpless world that has only gotten significantly worse since this movie premiered. The question posed by Time in 1966, "Is God Dead?" is just as relevant today.

@@musa-vl6ol I feel like if it was truly about the subjugation of women female characters wouldn't have such integral parts within this cult. I think it's more the subjugation of innocence and goodness. Obviously, they needed a young woman to spawn Satan's child but it's not just her who suffers in this film but every person with an ounce of morality.

@@musa-vl6ol I find it particularly interesting that this coven almost universally consists of middle-aged/elderly people because in the late 60's it was youth who was blamed for the destruction of wholesomeness in America and warping it through their excessive drug use and radically liberal views on sexuality. The fact that Minnie and Roman could be anyone's grandparents makes the film extra chilling, humorous and fascinating. We expect them to resemble the lost souls of confused hippies like the Manson Girls but these are people of the Greatest Generation who were raised in an era where Christian ideals dominated American society. It makes you wonder how they became employees of Satan.

Since they didn't have so many special effects as we do these days, they had to work hard on the screenplay and that's how such wonderful classics came to life.. it's hard to find a brilliant film these days, it's like 1 in a million

You're right! Music, cinema, literature. It's as if everyone suddenly became dumb once January 1, 2000 occurred. It boggles my mind that The Rolling Stones could write a song like Sympathy for the Devil while abusing drugs and alcohol yet clean singers today can barely write beyond a 5th grade level.
@ksol1460tv
@ksol1460tv Жыл бұрын
Actually, the brilliance you're seeing is all in the book. Polanski had never adapted a book to film before and he didn't know if he was even _allowed_ to change anything, so he literally took Ira Levin's book and put it up on the screen. That's why there were no special effects.
@mikeymoo1291

@@ksol1460tv I think it's a bit of a masterpiece really. You forget it was made in 1968. The absence of special effects make it so rich and deep, convincing and surreal. Also the quality of the acting and casting is out of this world. In a way I think the better special effects get...the worse they get.
@ksol1460tv

@@mikeymoo1291 I do too. Too many producers think they can use "state of the art" to carry an otherwise bad film. I honestly think _Rosemary_ is Polanski's best work. The acting is superb, even the bit players are good -- the sure sign of a great film. 1968, I remember when it came out, although I didn't see it until many years later, only read the book (I was 11 and thought it was great suspense). I was more responding to VPL who seemed to be saying they made the screenplay carry the film in the absence of special effects, I meant by putting the book up on the screen virtually unchanged, they didn't have to really "work" on the screenplay since the book had almost zero things that even could be special effects. The atmosphere is all created in the acting, lighting and especially the direction. The smoke coming from the living room while Rosemary and Minnie are doing the dishes; Minnie getting on the phone to Dr. S and she's _just_ halfway out of frame; the angle as Rosemary wakes up in Hill's office thinking she's safe and then Guy and Dr. S walk in -- genius.

This is a great trailer with one problem: it gives away the fact that it really is a coven of witches. The very first time I watched this movie, I wasn’t sure if Rosemary was imagining it or if it was real. Once you’ve seen the movie once, it’s very obvious. But it’s not that obvious the first time. The trailer is cut exactly in the way a true hack would have approached the material as the director. Oh its a a monster movie really. No, it's fing a psychological piece. Rosemary's paranoid, suffering from a hormonally-induced breakdown. This is how people go mad. Except in the end of course the most horrible of things have actually been going on all along. But you cant play it that way, that's the brilliance of the filmmaker's choices and why it survives as a classic. Unless the trailer is a parody of how a horribly misguided studio would market a brilliant film by undermining it, than go away and watch more film before bothering to present them or anything else to the public on youtube or otherwise.

I mean I get where you're coming from, but it's a tremendously suspenseful film imo!:) There's only a few truly scary parts, but it does a great job of building tension throughout the film. As a viewer we can imagine ourselves in Rosemary's position; she's extremely vulnerable, trying to protect her unborn child, meanwhile she is at the center of a conspiracy, and everyone in her life is plotting against her. She has nobody to turn to, and even people she tries to confide in betray her trust. But like if you're more into movies with lots of gore, ghouls, goblins, etc I can totally understand why you'd find it a little boring and slow compared to horror of the last 20-25years, I do get it lol.
