@demianhaki7598 9 жыл бұрын
My god, it's not that hard to explain, as ludicrous as the rhyming slang is: a) You cannot decode the meaning of a word, Jimmy, if you don't know it in advance. There is a rule behind it's construction, but you cannot go backwards to find it out by yourself. You actually have to learn the vocabulary. No need to try and guess. b) When substituting a word like "stairs", you then find a two word expression (that you and your friends have all agreed upon or gotten used to) with two words that kind of belong together, e.g. "apples and pears", the latter of which has to rhyme with the word that you want to substitute: "stairs" and "pears". However, and here comes the crazy part, instead of using the word that rhymes ("pears") to substitute the original word ("stairs"), you now use the 1st word out of the two word expression as a substitute ("apples"). So "stairs" is substituted with "apples" via the rhyming link of "pears". => "I'm going up the stairs" => "I'm going up the apples"
@evesapple

+Demian Haki You got it :) Thats one of the few I use, along with 'minces' for eyes (mince pies), 'boat' for face (boat race) and pony for- well, she explained it. But it is a shame it's dying out. Language is always evolving, but I prefer rhyming slang to the text speak its now shifting to :(

i like the interview, but it kind of bothers me how she's asked about her partner and jason isn't. just the common practice of interviewing women in the entertainment industry about their love life rather than their career, whereas that's less frequent with male actors or models. not to say that all interviewers are sexist or out to stereotype women, but in jason's interviews it's about his recent movies and things he's been up to.

All I know is that you are not truly a Cockney unless you grew up within the listening distance of the, "Bow Bell" in London. Then you are a real Cockney. I tried to remember this and asked a Londoner on a train a few weeks past what the name of the bell was...all I kept hearing her saying was, "The Ball's Bell". Not right at all, LMAO! But it is true and it is the, "Bow Bell".

it doesn't need to have a similarity in meaning, if it does you lose the point because what they're saying is no longer secret. All you need is for the last word in the phrase to rhyme, then you use the first word so it's harder to decode.

Rhyming slang -> Step 1) find a phrase that rhymes with what you want to say (ie. house = cat and mouse) 2) take away the 2nd half of the phrase (ie. take away mouse). And there you have it - when you want to say house, you say cat instead. There are many words that were agreed upon as Cockney slang that the Cockney community often used in London in the 19th century. A whole vocabulary unto itself. Examples: Stairs -> Apples (apples and pears). Road -> Frog (frog and toad). Money -> Bread (bread and honey) (We actually still use that one today and a modified version of bread, ie dough). Fist -> Duke (Duke of York, because Cockneys called fists forks) (We also still use that one, ie. "put up your dukes" or "let's duke it out", referring to a fist fight.)

According to tradition a true Cockney must be born within earshot of the sound of Bow Bells at St Mary-le-Bow church in bow tower hamlets london.

She didn't explain it well at all. She just made it sound like you find a random word that rhymes with the word you're going to substitute and use that new word (e.g. use trap for crap). She failed to mention that you have to start with a common two-word phrase, and then remove the word that actually rhymes with the word you're going to substitute, and start using the word that doesn't rhyme (e.g. pony trap is the common two-word phrase so you remove the word that actually rhymes with crap (trap) and start using pony to say crap instead). This is what I've gathered from the comments anyway. I don't really get why rhythms (rhythm and blues) can't be used as a substitute for shoes but that's a whole other story.

Ok so two theories for the 1's and 2's meaning shoes. First the nursery ryhme one two buckle my shoe. Second when people say dressed to the nines. I'm pretty sure that's what they say but it many refer to articles of clothing.
