Disclaimer - I have made this video before, but it was years ago and since a lot of you are new I figured I'd make a revamped version of it. The original can be found here - Before You Try To Learn Modes, Watch This Video... - • Before You Try to Lear...
If modes of the major scale are something that confuse you as a guitar player, it's likely that you've skipped over some music theory fundamentals that you need to understand first before you have any hope of making sense of the modes.
There's also a chance that you've been misled by a lot of instructors who either don't know what they're talking about, or do know what they're talking about but are more interested in selling you 'shortcut' methods that often disregard music theory and promise the world but don't actually deliver any long-term value to you as a guitar player.
It is my hope with this video that I can help to clear up the confusion a lot of guitar players feel surrounding the topic of modes.

Someone pointed out that my Strat was tuned down a half step for this video. So when you're hearing me play the G Ionian / A Dorian stuff that's actually Gb / Ab. I've been studying some SRV tunes and forgot the guitar was in that tuning 🤦‍♂️ The tele was in standard tuning FYI.

I'm glad I took the time to learn this stuff on my own around 2011-2012. I ended up doing a couple CD's and getting hired to play gigs, no cover stuff, all instrumental to backing tracks. Learning the notes and the scale positions in a key, and being able to move all of that to any key is priceless.

Definitely buy his course. I’ve played guitar (blindly) for years and the foundational knowledge from his course has skyrocketed my playing. The course is structured perfectly, actually tells you why each piece of theoretical knowledge is useful to your playing and shows you how to practise it. Put In the effort and it will pay off :)

I've been fan of Ross for 4 years. I was skeptical at first but I decided to bought the bulletproof course and it helped me a lot in my playing and it drastically improved my improvisation, as well as the application of modes. Its not an overnight results, and it takes a lot of patience to absorb the material. But surely, its very enlightening and rewarding in the long run once you grasp all the concepts.

I took His bulletproof guitar player course and it’s far and away the best teaching tool I’ve ever used! Ross, I have a question. I too share in your playing and learning obsession. 2 years ago I started learning the modes and have them down and incorporate them very well, but I notice basically what I’m doing is using them around the minor pentatonic boxes / shapes. In other words I figured out which pentatonic box fits with each mode for example Ionian is pattern 3 , Dorian is pattern 4, Aolean is pattern 1 etc. is that the wrong way to approach it? It certainly works and I think it’s because the pentatonic boxes I have memorized and can move through them and add the other notes of the major scale of that makes sense. I’m curious your thoughts. Love your stuff bro

Everything Ross says is spot on! No-one has formulated it better so far! The modes of the major scales were the Lesson One for all instruments at the Jazz School I attended in the late '70s. And it's really not Rocket Science, wait till you get to the harmonic and melodic minor scales! And also "learn your f**king intervals" (that's what Jaco Pastorius told me...). And no: knowing your music theory basics doesn't affect your "creativity"! Kudos Ross 👏

Ross, im a bullet proof member and im sorta stuck on the part about playing the the modes of a certain key in the lower portion of the neck. Should i be counting out the scale through intervals or should i be watching the scale diagram in the video? Im not sure how to practice this. I know the modes well say F , Ionian Dorian lydian etc from the 3rd fret is a week spot in my playing

Nice explanation Ross!..modes can be confusing as hell to a lot of guitarists..I usually just tell students that if they've been playing for less than 2 or 3 years to ignore the topic and keep learning the C major scale all over the fretboard. If they insist, of course, I try to break it down for them. By the way, I grew up in Perth so I'm kind of partial to hearing a wee Scot's accent on KZfaq - excellent work, my brother :)

I just watched a triad pairs video by Jens Larsen (whom I very much respect). In it he talked about choosing an avoid note over a Dm7 chord: he choose B. Needless to say this has completely thrown me and my understanding of modes as the B note is the key Dorian sound over a D minor. So yes, still confused.

For me ... For a mode to be clearly heard you don’t need a chord In fact it’s far easier to hear a mode if you only have a root note drone. The scale notes are far more distinct. Rick Beato does a vid on modes using a synth playing chords .. it’ really masks the intervals .. my preference

That way you can try out both of the courses and see which one would be a better starting point. I know that the concepts covered in Part 1 might seem basic and repetitive if you've already been playing for a few years. I'd been playing for 7/8 years myself and already knew scales, chords and whatnot at that point but I didn't really understand them as well as I could have until I learned what I teach in that course. Anyway, like I said earlier subscribing would be the best option for you to begin with. You get a 14-day money back guarantee with your first month in case you don't like it. Of course there ARE shortcuts, if there weren't any, then teaching yourself guitar would be about the same as learning with a good teacher. Just put in the hours, right? 😉 I've been a full-time guitar teacher in the SF Bay Area for about 10 years (not selling any digital products or lick-packs for $10 on Tik Tok or whatever the fuck kids use these days). The story is almost always the same - played guitar for years, don't even know the names of the notes on the fretboard but wants to learn blues, jazz, metal, fingerstyle, everything. The shortcut is this - learn the names of the notes on EVERY fret of the guitar without having to resort to "octave tricks". I don't care how many hours you put into learning the modes or how many licks you know, how many riffs you played. If you don't know the names of the notes on your fretboard you won't be able to apply any of that knowledge you might think you have. And you can learn the notes at least up to the 12th fret in 1-2 weeks. Yes, it is possible.
