To the point of the VCR. If you're paying for cable television, a transaction has already occurred. So you've already paid for the broadcast. Still unsure as to where I stand on this topic.

@@rossmanngroup I think subscribing to cable tv is more like subscribing to KZfaq Premium rather than paying for internet access. I always thought is just double dip having ads inside a cable tv subscription, when you compare to Netflix and services alike.

What about PBS, Fox, ABC, CBS, Broadcast antenna TV. You're not paying for a cable subscription to access that content and still get adds served to you. If you us your VCR to skip those adds is that really any different from this topic?

In recent times the agreement that you make when subscribing is a *license* agreement. You are not paying for the content of the broadcast but the right to view it *under the terms of the license* (which most of them say you are not allowed to make a copy). One of the few reasons that copies continue to be allowed is that we have people fighting in courts to invalidate “unreasonable” clauses from those licenses. For example: multiple companies have tried to restrict your viewing of specific broadcasts to a single time *and* a single device, wanting to force you to pay again if you view it on a second device. What happens if someone’s first device breaks, or they have a screen reader for accessibility? Some companies are quite happy to be rigid and demand payment again, but thankfully people push back to make those usages legal no matter what the license agreement says.

"The easiest way to stop piracy is not by putting antipiracy technology to work. It’s by giving those people a service that’s better than what they’re receiving from the pirates.” Gabe Newell was right. "Piracy" via adblock is an act of rebellion against bad practice that hinders usage of the service. It's like pirating a game that has DRM so bad it constantly shuts down legal buyers but gets stripped by pirates. If we want to get around it, give people an option or ability to watch without interruptions, ads hog bandwidth makes it hard on mobile data or rocky connections, often breaking the video. KZfaq does have a premium to nix ads, but then all it offers, "Pirates" already offer better, basic functionality that should be part of the service out the gate, not paywalled, things like listening to music unfocused. Google is the biggest delivery system for ads, and they can't figure out a better form of advertisement to not be intrusive? I don't think so.

I get and agree with your point, 100%. I have done less pirating myself once I actually had a way to buy things I wanted. The difference between my ability to buy content in 2022 and 2002 is crazy, and as a result, I don't even have a usenet service subscription anymore. To be real here though, they gave you youtube red which removes every ad on every creator for $10/mo and people still adblock youtube. If $10/mo for everything isn't enough then I don't know what is. Linus literally built his own platform that he offers very affordable subscriptions on if you dislike youtube that does not have the youtube ads. If you like youtube it's $10/mo not just for him, but to be ad free for every creator on the platform. If I were him I'd throw my hands up in the air and give up on the idea of pleasing anyone at that point.

Perhaps Ad Nauseam is the way to go it blocks ads but also generates clicks on blocked ads so the content creator is paid and being an omni clicker it breaks tracking because it clicks everything. The only one getting screwed is the advertiser seems like a good way to do things given TV Commercials are paid for whether or not they are watched or fast forwarded. Honestly click based payment is problematic because it allows advertisers to not pay for advertising unless they get a user interaction out of it which is not how advertisers should pay content creators for hosting your ads without expecting a return.

Adblockers were a response to massively overwhelming, intrusive, and malicious ads, and we're all the better for having them. Back in the 00s, Ad companies were unscrupulous and had absolutely no regulation on the net. Most served malware/viruses, not to mention the Flash-based ads with seizure-inducing flashing and sounds, the popups and click-jackers that would force-open new tabs if you so much as tried to click anywhere on a website, Gambling/Pr0n/other adult ads on otherwise innocent websites. Bullshit. I remember when Ad Blockers started. They started after the first shitstorm ads (pop-ups, whole screen ads, audio ads, flashing ads etc) was limited to shadiest of shady sites. Even Geocities and similar free space providers calmed down before AdBlockers started. Mostly because at that time there wasn't any plugin support for browsers and ads were hosted at site provider's side so you couldn't really screen them but they weren't a thing during the worst of times.

@SirReptitious
@SirReptitious 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, if ads were confined to static, tastefully made items that were seamlessly integrated into the site, I doubt I ever would have felt the desire to block them. But instead people thought the best way to advertise was to use pop-ups, seizure-inducing flash animations, huge banner ads that lumbered after you as you scrolled down the page, and any other way they could get your attention. Even if it was so annoying that the only effect it had on you was to make you swear to yourself that you would never, EVER, buy the product or service being advertised just on the principle of how annoying their advertising was! So of course, I started using adblockers. There are a few channels I watch regularly and highly value their content. So for those what I do is open my secondary browser and open tabs for some of those channels. I mute the audio, set the video res to 144p, set the playback speed to 2x. Then I go to the video tab on their channels and press the "play all" button, and minimize the browser. This way those channels get to play all their ads that are never skipped. The playback speed goes to normal when playing ads which is fine. It usually takes almost a week to play all the videos on a channel. Then I will restart that browser to release all the ram it was using, load up other sites I watch and do it again. Once I have cycled through them all I start again. My system is on 24/7 so it's not costing me any extra money to do this, and it negates the guilt I would feel if I didn't do this for my favorite channels.

One thing I think is actually interesting is that individuals using an ad-blocker incentivises companies to sponsor individual creators, which actually makes it BETTER for creators, so that have more liberty over the ads that are served to their audience. It's a little counter-intuitive that it works this way, but it means that any creator who uses sponsorship is going against the main monetization stream of the platform. If anything, I think that spaces like KZfaq and TikTok should accept that the scene has changed and do more to help creators find sponsorships, negotiate pricing, and then be able to skim off a part of that sponsorship because they are providing the platform. I think that's fair and innovative and also works to the best interest of the audience, who (rationally) have learned not to trust the ads that are fed to them by companies. For the most part, ads are predatory and mostly get to feed on the same portion of the population again and again. Great video! I'm pretty sure this is the first video of yours I've seen, and it's amazing quality. (edit) That being said, I think that individual creators should work on figuring out if they want to monetize their videos and what that might mean for them, and I think that KZfaq should do more for creators to make sure they aren't getting unfairly demonetized or striked, because they owe that to their creators.

We need to look back to see, why adblock was made in first place. Like 15 years ago (or earlier), ads was getting more and more annoying on websites. Big ads made in flash player with autoplay video, popup ads covering article that you was reading, ads with X button that was "running away" from mouse. Popup ads was so annoying that web browsers implemented native popup blockers that are present to this day (nobody calls build-in popup blocker illegal/piracy) So technically adblockers are result of mistakes made in past. Who knows if adblockers would be as popular now as there are, if ads back then wasn't made annoying and intrusive.

very much this. adverts auto running with sound? fake [x] buttons that wont close the add but forward you to the link? most of this was and still is extremly instrusive and sometimes even breaks the actual contant (the webpage). the amount of people that read up on how adblockers work wouldnt be a fraction without the pure necessity to do so. OH and the whole argument "content creators live by adverts" is kinda lame too. There was a youtube before the creators made any money - and arguably this was the better version of this platform. The need for competition for search rankings, front page time and ad revenue has many negative impacts on this platform and arguably the overall quality of the content has not improved (on a technical level sure.. but on an artistic level certainly not)

HOURS LONG ADS? Who the fuck even has that much money to have their hour long ads run wild lol it’s absurd. Actually, using adblock doesn't screw over the site. This is how ads work. Company pays network to serve ad, network puts ad into system to be served, network pays a small fraction of what was paid to creator IF the ad gets watched. This works for live streaming sites like Twitch, this works for web pages with 30 ad blocks(which by the way, only pay if it's CLICKED, not if it's viewed), this works for video sharing sites like KZfaq. The network already got it's money. So a better way to support creators is to support them directly, either through merch(almost everyone likes clothes, unless you're a nudist) or through things like Patreon and direct donations.

Absolutely nailed it. Needless to say the ads usually are like 10x louder than regular content, and sometimes they would even go off in "inactive" tabs that have scripts to reload the ad stuff after a given amount of time. That and the vast and utter mass of malware hidden in them are the main reasons I use uBlock Origin. Another is just saving lots, and I mean LOTS of loading time and even data traffic on mobile. I don't pay my carrier a fortune per month for a gig or two just to have that drained by a truckload of ads I don't care about. As for KZfaq, some uploaders know how to exaggerate with what feels like a thousand pieces of midrolls. Not exactly my taste of tea. Too bad I can't set rules for individual channels that I would totally support by letting the ads play. Some of them that I watch a lot and I know they need the cash get a few bucks per Patreon though as a fair compensation (and actually that's a LOT more than the adsense revenue). I used to recommend using AdBlock basically everywhere for quite a while - in order to support some content creators indirectly, I don't do that anymore. If someone is nagging about the ads I tell them they could get YT Premium to get rid of that, but I won't mention a blocker anymore. I've considered doing that myself as well, but my income is extremely limited. I'd instantly do that if my situation would better though.

For me, adblock isn't piracy. If it is, then advertisers are harassers and ad service providers are stalkers. Ultimately I'm not affected by ads as a consumer practice... In everyday life I really only buy food, and very occasionally new clothes. (my current long sleeved t-shirt is 20 years old, I have repaired and re-dyed it to make it look new again). These days I even scavenge used computer parts since I don't feel like I need the latest stuff. Ultimately ads are just "audiovisual nuisances" with the ad providers stalking and spying on me... In the end, I am of no value to the advertisers, so adblockers and privacy add-ons just remove me from their equation, and it is the only thing I can add to my life to make the internet seem like a decent place to hang out on.

I accepted ads when it was one before a video, or two for a longer video. Then, they started to put three in front of a video, and put more ads in the middle of the video, and started playing the same ad over and over. Ad abuse is a real thing, and consumers have the right to protect themselves from it. This goes double for paid services, such as cable, or 'ad-free' radio (which the first time I heard an add on Sirius, I immediately cancelled my Sirius subscription). I feel zero sympathy for advertisers, because they go too far, too often, and break their own "implied contracts" to 'steal' your attention. Without Adblocker, KZfaq would not be watchable, and the creators would not get my support either through likes, comments, or merchandise sales. I used to allow ads in the interest of fair play. But having constantly dealt with intrusive and disruptive ads as well as malicious software, I block all ads and have for years. My attitude now is this: it's not my problem, I don't care how you cover costs, and you can't stop me.

If you go to websites full of malicious software thinking that ad block will protect you then you are their ideal customer because every picture and script running on that website may contain some nasty stuff regardless of ads. Did you get any virus from watching KZfaq? Probably not, because if service providers were in the last couple of years not capable of reasonably well defending against that, you likely would not have an email address managed by these providers too, as they use similar tech to clean incoming emails of harmful additions. So, you likely just selectively punishing everybody for the mistakes of the few, while continuing to use all of their services. The real harm comes not from ads but from metadata collection, and ad blockers do nothing against that but it is the reason why big companies do not care about your ad blocking that much, in fact, you can find ad blocker ads even on KZfaq, despite ads will be the only thing they are left with once people start taking countermeasures against data collection of their privacy when sufficient harm is done worldwide (like Cambridge Analytica scandal where UK referendum/US election were influenced with targeted ads using illegally obtained metadata) for governments start to give a damn to the point of not caring about a bit of harm to profits of big data collectors...

Don't forget that using adblock also increases your device's security. It has happened a few times by now that large ad networks have been hacked and were distributing malware along with the ads. The biggest reason for me to use adblock is that I don't want to be tracked. I don't mind watching a sponsored message in a video which helps the creator, but I just don't want to be tracked, which is pretty much what all ad networks do nowadays.

And for those that are born after 2000, most likely did not experience the era that adware/malware was on every other official free/demo programs and sites would on the regular run popup and pop under banner ads, even full screen popup windows and a majority of these banners were purposefully intrusive and miss leading in order to interrupt your viewing and make you click them. It was a common practice for sites in general. And youtube is one of the few sites that I will turn it off occasionally for those that I subscribe to, but I do keep it on when I am just browsing.

Ad blocking is a consequence of the way greedy advertising networks abused internet users in the past, and can't be taken back or forgotten. It's unfortunate that content creators are now paying the price, but ultimately they'll be forced to find new (or old) ways to monetise.

for content creator it really is catch 22 to get a business out of a channel it need to grow you can't grow your channel with things like nebula nor can you shift completely to nebula and or your own website after you become big your viewership will simply not grow and over time it'll die out so a good chunk of your content need to be in the free platform which i would hope people find it understandable that even though it's free no business would want to do it with negative profit. so people complain about their free content is in fact not free (but they won't actually spend money if given the choice)

Honestly don't even feel bad for YT. They block monetization on 70% of the content I enjoy anyway, so it's not like me blocking ads even matters anymore - Yet YT likes to still try to show ads on things YT won't pay creators on. Creators should be moving away from forced ads anyway. I liked it when they didn't have to, but it appears that the people in charge of ads have no interest in being remotely reasonable anyway. Adblock telling advertisers that you blocked it, makes impressions from people who don't use adblock more valuable, since it weeds out the people who will never engage with the ads anyway- I'm more likely to engage negatively anyway, with companies that advertise to me. I am guaranteed to not be one of the impressions that will lead to a purchase, so it's not like advertises have less purchases, by not having me.

The problem with advertisements is they're fundamentally incompatible with the free market. They're a form of enforced revenue. They're trying to force to watch the ad by any means necessary (we have adblock detection even today, and I'm not looking forward to the day when eye tracking becomes common and inevitable), and they're trying to force you to buy a product with the ad itself, which is what pays for the ad in the first place. All of this is an attempt to make products successful based on what businesses would like, instead of their customers. There is no option for this to be an acceptable form of revenue. Subscription models are infinitely better, because with those at least you're paying for the product only, and not a whole miscellaneous industry as well that only exists to waste your time, spy on you, and manipulate your purchases to hijack some of your influence over the market. That's why KZfaq Premium pays so much better, it cuts out all these middlemen.

@@kei2142 Actually my understanding is that a couple of years ago KZfaq sent an email to creators saying they were going to be adding midroll ads to run by default on all videos over a certain length and telling creators they could opt out of this change. Then they just did it to everyone even the people who opted out, some of whom were really annoyed about it and paid members of their staff to go back and remove all those extra ads. Digital piracy is to make an unauthorized copy of something. Ad-blocking is refusing to view/filtering out specific content (i.e. advertisements). These two definitions do not overlap in meaning, they are not the same.
@Jankyito
@Jankyito 8 ай бұрын
That makes sense.... except that your definition is nonsensical. Streaming a video illegally is piracy, piracy has nothing to do with straight up downloading a video or "making a copy". Even by this definition streaming would still be considered illegal because streaming is your computer litteraly making a shot term copy of a video on your computer. If a website states that viewing ads are the payment necessary to view their content, refusing that payment while still receiving the content is literal piracy.
@Jankyito
@Jankyito 8 ай бұрын
@justalonelypoteto it depends on how the company decides to put their content on the market. KZfaq relies on a sort of content as a service platform where they obviously do not want people downloading their videos, ESPECIALLY music. This is why there is no real download button, and you have to go through alternative sketchy methods in order to do so. A company has a right to put whatever limitations on their services they want, if they say you need to watch ads to access their content, that is the rule you must follow. Doing otherwise is literally piracy. You state "download it for backup purposes" but a company does not need to give you the right to download the content. I don't believe any content platform such as Netflix or HBO or Disney+ allow true downloads. This is common with software such as CAD where you download gigabytes worth of software, but as soon as your subscription ends it's all worthless. You pay to have access to the software, you watch ads to have access to the content, its not that complicated.
@Jankyito

@00Kode00 Yes and no depeneding on your intentions. If you're intentions are to leave the room BECAUSE of the ads, thats piracy, That's obvious. Imagine a world where everyone just got up and left as soon as advertisements played. This means that click through rates would heavily tank. Advertisers will only pay if their ads get clicked on but if everyone turns off the computer as soon as an ad plays advertisers would never pay for ads and your favorite content creators won't get a single ad deal ever again. If this becomes rampant enough, youtube wouldn't exist as a platform as youtube is only funded by ads. To make an analogy, let's say you and I make a deal where I send you a product and I'll send you a check to fill out to pay for the product as soon as it arrives at your door step. You get the product, you see the check, but you throw the check in the trash. Did you just steal from me?

@@Jankyito the difference is 1) watching an ad is not a financial transaction, unlike a check or bank transfer 2) you don't sign a legally binding contract whereby you must glue your eyes to the screen whenever an ad plays. The advertiser is paying for an ad to be served, not for it to be guaranteed to be watched by someone, just like they can't force you to not doze off during the ad, obviously the hope is that some people will watch the ad but that's a gamble, and one the advertiser has to take
@Jankyito
@Jankyito 8 ай бұрын
@justalonelypoteto 1) financial transactions have nothing to do with this, it was just an example. Transactions can still occur without actual money so your point here doesn't make sense. 2) Actually, you do. It's called TOS. Any company has the right to deny you any service when you don't follow their rules. It's the contract you sign by using their service. Also you're just wrong. Companies buy ad space in order to advertise their products. If people are leaving the room while ads play, advertisers will simply stop buying ads and youtube will cease to exist. Do you think advertisers will buy ads if everyone has ad block? If everyone leaves the room? Obviously not. You could argue not everyone is going to be doing this, but you have to contend with the fact that in your world everyone could do it and nothing old be wrong with that. Your world basically leads to internet where everything is subscription based because it is impossible to.make money through ads anymore.

As many said: in general, AdBlock is a simple measure of security. I'll also *strongly* recommend script blockers. I block *all* javascript by default and only if I allow some domains - they're in. Now, about YT ads: *1* They're terrible and intrusive; *2* They are unskippable; *3* Even if you "support the creator" they will often insert a promotion into their video anyways, dipping you twice. So "YT Red" / "Patreon" are irrelevant here; *4* Creators now expect revenues - fair, but comparison with piracy or even just tickets is totally wrong. You're right here: "who pays - advertisers vs creators"; *5* YT existed long before ad revenues. And it was great.

Since well if I get a spyware or something on my device. I am the one who has to remove it or replace any parts that get damaged. Long as anything bad that happens to my device comes out of my pocket. I am going to take all the basic steps needed to protect it. Which honestly after thinking about this some more. It seems like this shouldn't that big of a deal for these who have a large viewer base. I don't see Adblockers as piracy. It's reducing the risk and balancing the price for watching. I mean, when you go to almost ANY website, they want you to accept cookies, which means the advertising company now knows almost everything about you. What equipment you use, where you are, your name/mailadress, what you already have been looking at, and so on. So by now, you have already paid a hefty price - your privacy. And then they want to present you with a bunch of adds on top? So advertisers, make up your mind. Do you want our private details to sell to others (which we haven't allowed access to our data) or do you want us to watch ads? You can't have it all even if you want to. Only to increase your profit. Why are cookies even nessessary? 10 years ago noone needed to install cookies, now everybody have to, just to access the site. I can understand they need to know your OS and maybe also what language, but my IP, my exact location, how long time I am online, what I watch, what I comment on? Just why? Unfortunately it seems like no-one cares, maybe only EU. All other have no interest in protecting the users, the profit is too big.

Glad the whole implied contract thing was covered, because my absolute first thought was that this entire argument necessitates that someone should have to actually sit down and watch the ad in order to not be a pirate. If blocking the ad is piracy because Linus doesn't get paid his 1% of a single cent for the view, which is his argument, then not paying attention to ads when they're played is also piracy because you aren't paying the advertiser with your attention. You have stolen their time and effort by refusing to pay attention. The problem with this whole idea that it's piracy is that there never was an implied contract, and even the advertisers know this. They don't expect every instance of an ad showing to gain the attention of their target. In their finances, they're building in an expectation of some level of waste. This isn't true for just YT or TV ads, either. This is true for literally every ad everywhere, and that short article covers the fact that advertisers know this and it has always been their burden to gain your attention and not our burden to pay them with our attention.

Late to the talk, but that 1% of a cent likely already considers the lack of attention that ads get. Since buying ad slots NEEDS to be cheaper than the money it brings down the line (and ads being awfully effective at that), then every single ad needs to provide as little money as possible. I WOULD argue that the monetization from ads WOULD be larger (heh... 2% of a cent? wow doubled the numbers) if spectators paid more attention, because there are lower losses and companies would find a way to monetize more. But that is an argument I would only make if companies worked in the people's best interest and the market worked perfectly, which neither do.

You almost has the point with the VCR. Back in the early 1980's - the TV stations, the producers, the MPAA had a legal moan over the fact you could record and time-shift TV. Ended up at court at a Copyright claim. They actually claimed that the fast-forward feature broke the law by allowing you to skip adverts. The court didn't agree.
