I have been using a rotary for 45 years and agree 100%. I just did my own test not one week ago. I went over 1/2 my hood with a very expense DA, and it left MORE micro scratches with a brand new black pad then my rotary with the same pad and polish. I never understood why until I searched and found this video. Interesting about Europe referencing DA’s as toys, because that was what I was thinking when I tried one. For me personally, it is marketing hype for people not willing to learn the correct polishing methods with a rotary.

Great video again! I definitely havn't 'mastered' the rotary yet, but do have some experience. It's difficult to get a hologram free finish for me, but it's a nice smooth and quiet experience. Anyway, like Yvan said, for me nothing comes close in cutting power to 21mm DA. I use a Zentool 21e2, Rupes Blue wool, Optimum polishes and the system 4000. Compared to a rotary with the big wool pads and Menzerna 400, it's way more powerful, but can still finish down. The Rupes wool is actually the only pad I use, even on gloss black, with just minor micro-marring. I've tried a bunch of combo's of pads, polishers, compounds and techniques. But nothing has worked like the one above. Of course always looking to improve and find something better! And there's something about a rotary that peaks my interest. Maybe with the right pad/compound/technique combo it would cut more!

Your happiness or frustration with any type of machine, totally depends on the type of clearcoat you’re working on. On many China-made EVs, theres 99% no marring (but you’re creating great gloss) while cutting with a Rotary + big 4ply wool pad + certain types of compounds including Meguiars classic No85. Its virtually 100% clear (after an APC soak and rinse). Amazing. But on many Japanese cars factory clears, such a combo will produce horrendous marring/swirling that requires many further rounds to finesse. Hence, a genuine professional detailer is perfectly comfortable with both Rotary and DA, and based on the colour and type of clearcoat, he/she knows how to “READ” the paintwork (instead of working blindly) and knows how to combine both machines to obtain the desired results based on the TIME constraints, PRICE charged and COST of the job.

Thanks for the videos. I’m just a amateur who follows and wants to work on the cars. If I wanted to simply wax what should I use the DA or Rotary? Also what pad Should I get with whatever you recommend. Based on your videos I want to get the rotary unless you think it’s a bad idea. I would like to get into polishing and one steps in the future . I think I have the method down at least in theory!

Yvan I agree 100% if finish rotary it definitely looks glossier. What I always have thought though about DA cutting is that is sucks having to downsize machines to really get edges good etc. and I love cutting on rotary for that reason but hate that it usually requires more follow up steps. However, I watched a 3d guy basically do wool cut, medium foam compound cut again, then black foam low speed on a polish and it was immaculate. In a normal “two stage enhancement” type detail IE step one cut and step 2 polish, is your position (opinion) that even though you have to downsize machines to do really good edge work on some cars that it is still worth it to do all DA cut?

Also, my goal is definitely to increase my efficiency, much like hawk pro, I spend way too much time on cars and I’m looking to cut it as much as possible while simultaneously giving awesome results. It sounds like the thin blue rupes foam wool on da combined with the black waffle pad on rotary is the way to do that.
