We continue with the machine work for the rotary welding table. In this episode I machine the lock handle. This handle is a simple lock to provide anti rotation when needed. I utilized scrap chrome rod materials, and even a small piece of old bronze prop shafting.
Hope you enjoy.
Next episode we'll get back on the base plate.
Adam

Reminded me of old black & white westerns when the hero gets the bullet removed from his shoulder by the town "Doc". That noise that brass made when it dropped into your pan ..... great idea to play catch. Great to see the love and care that goes into one of your own projects Adam. An inspiration to us all. Thank you for sharing.

Nice job Adam, keep up the good work. There is nothing more satisfying (For a machinist) to transform an ugly piece of stock into something pretty and functional.A few years back i was doing a welding job for my boss in his home and spotted two 3mt lengths of 50mm brass rod both having tapered, threaded and key slots at the end of each one,I asked what they where and he replied "Oh they are just two old prop shafts from my fathers boats that have been here for years and some day i will bring them to the scrap yard to get rid of them"........I nearly fainted at the thought of that lovely material getting scrapped. I now have enough brass rod to keep me making pretty shiny things for many years to come.

You probably would have had the same reaction if you had seen what dad and I scrapped a few years ago. We too had a couple old bronze prop shafts we scrapped, as well as a lot more material. At that time I didnt think my shop was going to be what it is now. I would have saved much more than I did.

Adam, A great job! The brass insert is a nice touch so you don't scar up your shaft when steel meets steel. You get it painted/powdered coated with your "Abom79" badge on it and you will have a great welding table. Every machinist and welder will be envious! They will probably show their wives and say "Honey. I want one of those for Christmas!" Again . . . an excellent job! Have a good one! Dave

Abom79 I vote for not painting it any color. Clear coat it and let the shiny metal shine. Powder coat the base and badge black. Then Project "OVERKILL" will be a stand out project.

Adam that's not a piece of machinery. It's damned nice piece of sculpted metal artwork! The project is really coming together beautifully. A photo (before painting) of the completed project laid out would be fantastic! Kinda like an exploded drawing, only laid out flat. And what an SNS! 3 fer 3 on a sign of respect. The price of this table is going up, the buyer will need to have deep pockets! The ratios of the "T" handle/table are just right! Your design and build of this project is high class art! I wouldn't worry about "overkill" because a friend repairing a log loader for me a long time ago said, "just remember, you can't build it too stout" and a he was correct. As I see it 'Abom Stout' isn't too stout, it's AWESOME! Thanks for another great video! ....13

Adam, I love the honest way you do these vids. I often make "soft" tooling on the fly. And no matter how good it ends up, I often have little mental oops's along the progression. Your vids portray an active dynamic mind at work. And they are so much better, because you don't edit out the minor "dangits" we make along the way. Phil.

I have to respond to the folks that don't like your videos. Don't watch if you don't like, very simple. I, being a newby to this world, love the way you present, patiently and in great detail. I really like both your and Tom's tool gathering from the flea market as I don't have access to one where I live. Great job on the table and my opinion the handle is perfect. As I recently told Tom, you, Tom, Jodi, Keith and SV seeker have cost me a crap ton of money with a bridgeport, clausing colchester, migs, tigs, presses welding table (I'll email you a pic of mine) all purchased in the last year. Thanks Man.

I think that T handle is perfect. Just remember the size of the table. You will be reaching under that to tighten the handle. You will be very happy you left it 10". One of the cool things about this project is it shows all the little steps it takes to make a simple T handle. There is a lot of machining that goes into simple things we don't think about. That smile on your face when you tightened it up says it was exactly what you wanted. Perfect!

Beautiful work as always. Thank you for the time you put into your channel. A thought on the diameter of the brass wear pad. Over time it's going to mushroom and when your great, great, grandson (or daughter) needs to remove the T handle to refurbish the bearings, the brass pad will bind in the threads and try to unscrew itself from the shaft. Maybe a left-hand thread on the brass plug? (Just kidding :) )
