One of the biggest mistakes weightlifters make with their upper body workouts is focusing on their chest, shoulders, back and arms while overlooking perhaps the most important muscle group of them all...the rotator cuff! More guys are kept out of the gym because of shoulder injuries from ignoring the rotator cuff muscles than almost all other causes.
The rotator cuff is actually a group of four muscles, three of which externally rotate the shoulder. The thing about the rotator cuff is that they are they only muscles you have in your entire upper body that control external rotation. All of the bigger muscles in your upper body contribute to internal rotation of the shoulder. As you can imagine, ignoring the only muscles that externally rotate the arm will lead to a massive imbalance in the shoulder joint.
More than that however is that role that a well balanced rotator cuff plays for weightlifters. The RC lends stability to the naturally unstable shoulder joint. It's job is to counteract the vertical pull of the deltoids which causes the head of the humerus to stay away from the roof of the acromion. Without the downward pull of the rotator cuff muscles, the shoulder joint becomes closed down and loses space which can contribute to shoulder impingement.
Once a shoulder is impinged, the tissues in the joint become inflamed which leads to an even greater decrease in joint space. Any overhead pressing movements, bench presses, or any movement that puts your arm over your head becomes extremely painful and weight lifters are forced to stay away from these movements in order to let the joint heal. This time away costs them precious muscle size and can set them back a great deal in their training.

I tell you what man I am a certified personal trainer and I learn more about anatomy from Jeff then I did in my NASM text book. Watching most of Jeff's videos should count as getting certified no joke either this guy is so knowledgeable.

Absolutely!! I am also a NASM certified personal trainer and Jeff is leagues beyond NASM. NASM taught me virtually nothing if you compare to to Jeff. You have to owe credit where credit is due.

I had to go to a physiotherapist recently due to a shoulder injury, and was told that the exercises that I had done for my rotator cuff (thanks to Jeff) were the only reason that I had not torn every muscle in my shoulder. Thanks Jeff and Thanks Athlean X.

I'm 44 years old and have been lifting for around 24 years now. I've had acromion (shoulder) surgery on one shoulder and need surgery on the other. What Jeff says is absolutely accurate. You may not feel the need to do what may seem like boring, light weight work, but your shoulders and joints will thank you years down the road if you do so.

Jeff, Thank you very much for this. I am 45 years old and have been neglecting my rotator cuff my whole life and finally was injured this past December. The injury kept me out of the gym, away from the ski hill, and generally suffering at work. I now fully understand the importance of taking care of the rotator cuff. I wish I had seen your videos years ago! Keep up the great work, it's a huge help.

I just really can't thank you enough for these videos! You think you have it all down, but then you realize there are problems & the stuff you learned before wasn't entirely adequate to prevent injuries. I've been busy in the gym with this stuff lately! I was lazy and skipped these exercises because they didn't seem important. Now I have bicep tendonitis and what I believe to be a labrum tear. It happened during deadlifts with alternating mixed grip which od course externally rotates the shoulders. If I had the been training my rotator cuffs I may have had the stability to handle it. Don't ignore this man's advice. He really is out to help his followers.

Outstanding presentation! I wish I would have followed these exercise principles over the years. I have been an avid weightlifter for over twenty years, and have never focused on these fundamental movements. Now, thanks to my ignorance, I have tears in three of the four muscles that make up the rotator cuff, a partially ruptured bicep tendon, bone spurs, and arthritis in my right shoulder. The pain is unreal. My mechanics and range of motion are shot. Not sure if I'll ever get it back. Super depressed over this. These videos are absolutely essential for proper training. Thank you Jeff!

Can't thank you enough for this video! For a week, my shoulder has felt like it had broken glass in the joint - grinding, cracking and painful. I gave this workout a try and the joint cracked, popped and the pain immediately receded.

If so, you should try to get your arms more forward. If they slide out backwards, it will hurt you.

Highlight Reel Backsquats? I usually like to do the leg exercise on leg day... you're going to fuck up your back thinking squats have any correlation to back whatsoever. I'm telling you this because I made the same mistake

Jeff knew about this in 2014. I went to 3 doctors about my shoulder impingement (which I didn’t know at the time) between 2018-2019. I literally had to diagnose and rehab myself by watching Jeff’s videos, and now my shoulders feel so much better that I can actually lift again. Jeff is a true physiological expert. Thank you, Jeff.

Ever since I started doing rotator cuff exercises, I noticed most of my shoulder pain went away, especially while bench pressing. Now I know on a technical level why these exercises are important. Thanks!

Honestly thank you so much for making this video. I have been working out consistantly for the past 3 years and am starting to have shoulder issues and pain in my bicep that I assume is linked to my shoulder. I have followed several different programs and have had varying success. You are so right when you say none of these programs address the external rotation of the shoulder. Again much appreciated.

MaximusAdonicus Thats a good idea. What I meant though is I'll add it as a actual workout with enough weigh to actually strengthen those muscles with appropriate weight, rather than just a lighter weight to warm and loosen them up.

Javi Martinez Generally it is recommended to NOT work the rotator cuffs with heavy weights. I've never seen anyone use nothing but light weights (5kg per arm or less) on them in the gym or in instructional vids. Just enough weight to cram a couple of CLEAN sets of 12's or so. If u want some heavy work on the back of the shoulders it's better to include more rear delt work, like face pulls etc.

Well Im not gonna go crazy with the weight, just enough to get about 3 sets of 12 or so. I do high rows and face pulls already when I hit shoulders. A light to moderate weight shouldnt do any harm...

Working the rotator cuffs every day is horrible advice. the goal is to strengthen them, they are muscles just like any other and require rest. You aren't going to strengthen anything by doing it every day. Especially if someone already has shoulder issues, this will only further facilitate damage. Stretches every day is a much more reasonable alternative, and you should do direct weight work for the rotator cuffs on shoulder days/pressing days to counterbalance the anterior workload.

After viewing this immensely helpful video, I immediately tried to figure how to do external shoulder moves on my TRX. It was very easy and intuitive -- for instance, leaning back, holding both handles and pulling back (sort of reverse flies) with arms sideways or with arms upwards (or even at 45 degree angles), or by leaning sideways and using one arm at a time to pull across. If you happen to have a suspension trainer, it's a good option for this type of work.

You see all these videos on youtube where guys just lift heavy and pushing and pulling but noone says anything about these muscles even tho the biggest problem when its comes to working with weights is shoulderproblem in some sort. but if you search on youtube on "rotatorcuff workout" you see a tiny girl or girls in general talk about how to train them.

Look at APTA.org it helps you in deciding and learning more about the field. What schools are available, the requirements etc!! I can tell you personally as a PT student that what he teaches is very much what we learn.

Jeff could you do a part 2 to this video? Explaining in a bit more detail exactly how to do these exercises. For example I have seen lots of people show what to do, but they never say if your scapula should be pulled back first, how often to do them, if it's better or worse to do them before big exercises like bench press etc. I would hate to start doing these everyday and later find out these little muscles can't handle that and end up getting injured on a compound movement because my shoulder was too weak to stabilize.

The quick answer is: do 2-4 sets of rotator cuff exercises at high reps (10-15) as part of your warm-up on every workout day.

MaximusAdonicus In my opinion and based on what i know and do, you can do this at the beginning of your workout to warm up your rotator cuff, but do it very light because the thruth is that if you challage your rotator cuff muscles at the beginning of your workout, you will end up pre exhausting them and it can be more likely for you to have an injury during the heavy exercises for other muscle groups instead of preventing it. For you to really INCREASE THE STRENGHT of your rotator cuff muscles i would rather do it after my workout and really challenge them a little bit more on each set instead of just warming up light before workouts. sorry for the bad english : )

eu mesmo ya that is what I was worried about. I know a lot of the time when you work a muscle first it pre exhaust it and makes it weaker for heavier movements. Obviously something like tiny muscles in the shoulder you do not want weak at all as things can get dangerous real fast.

All I want to say man is thank you for doing what you do. Every injury I have had or problem I have had with my workouts, you always point me in the right direction and it has worked without flaw. Right now I am dealing with bicep tendonitis and I thought I had to stop working out all together. After trying these out, I am back on track with my fitness goals. You have no idea how much this has helped me both in my workouts and fueling my mind with knowledge. Thank you very much. :)

Thank you again Jeff! I've had rotator cuff issue and even tho I've reabilated almost back to 100% the visual aspect helps tremendously!! I'm looking forward to the knee video whenever you decide to talk about that!

I have a question. I heard from scooby and scott herman that we should use very very lightweight for this kind of exercise and do high reps like 20. Is that true? How much weight do we use? Should we go to failure? What is the rep range? Can anyone please answer me. Thanks.

I recommend to my patients to begin with light weights and do high repetitions (the external rotators are endurance muscles) - working up to @ 3 sets of 30 repetitions in isolation type exercises (like the standing band or tubing ones demonstrated here). Yes, go to failure.

I've trained for over 20 years and figured I knew it all, what I realized after injuring my shoulder, my lower back and my knee within a 2 month time frame, is that I don't know it all and Jeff here does, thank God for this man.

This video just solved my 1 year long shoulder problem. I started doing several shoulder stability and strength exercises and i immediately saw results. The pain is reducing, and my shoulders supply more power to bodyweight excersises. This is great Jeff! Keep it up!
