A 4K walking tour through Rotherham England to see what's happening in the town, what is there, what has gone and what has changed here in Rotherham Town Centre.
Rotherham is a town in South Yorkshire in the North of England close to Sheffield and Doncaster.
Best known for coal mining and the steel industry, Rotherham is a minster town with around 250,000 people living in and around the area. We took a walk around Rotherham Town Centre to check out the place and show you around the streets here.
We start this walking tour on Westgate and head North past Main Street and down to Ship Hill and High Street. We take a left here onto Market Place and down into the heart of Rotherham Town Centre.
We come onto Rotherham Minster, All Saints Square, College Street and then onto High Street. The walk ends around Rotherham Bridge, Rotherham Train Station and the new development on the River Don
Rotherham town centre has various chain stores including Tesco Extra. Following the availability of "Vitality Grants" from 2009 onwards, a number of new independent businesses opened in the town centre such as Yella Brick Road
In 2015, Rotherham won the Great British High Street award for its independent town centre shopping. Judges praised the transformation of key properties and the restoration of its "historic core"
A plaque commemorating the award was unveiled by Secretary of State for Local Government & Committees Sajid Javid MP in September 2016.
As of 2021 the majority of the retail in Rotherham is made up of a thriving independent scene with lots of new start up businesses opening in the town centre.
Due to the close proximity of Sheffield City Centre, Meadowhall shopping centre and the towns Parkgate Retail Park Rotherham has struggled to attract major brands. This has created the opportunity for Rotherham to proposition itself as an independent alternative.
Rotherham is the hometown of the Chuckle Brothers, Arsenal and England goalkeeper David Seaman along with World Cup and English Premier League referee Howard Webb.
Sean Bean began his acting career in Rotherham while actors Liz White, Ryan Sampson, Dean Andrews and Darrell D'Silva also hail from Rotherham, as does former leader of the Conservative Party, William Hague, and Sir Donald Coleman Bailey.
Presenter James May grew up in Rotherham. His co-presenter on Top Gear Jeremy Clarkson trained to be a journalist at the Rotherham Advertiser.
Comedians Sandy Powell and Duggie Brown were born in Rotherham, as was actress Lynne Perrie. Christopher Wolstenholme of Muse, DJ Kritikal Mass, Dean Andrews of Life On Mars, artist Margaret Clarkson, band Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers and singer-actor Rob McVeigh were all born or mostly raised in Rotherham.

I was born in Rotherham. I live in Wales now.. Some of the best memories and best people in my life from this town. My mum's passed away now.. so it's such a pleasure to see all the places we walked together. Rotherham will always be in my heart.. And yes beautiful buildings. Rotherham as one of the best parks.. Clifton Park.. I hope the town gets back to its glory again.. To me it will always be a place of treasured memories.. and the friendliest people ! 💜

It's more than a shell, it's a shite hole. Don't get me wrong there is really good history in our town, but it gone down hill really badly since the late 70s early 80s n early 90s. I remember when I was younger there was quiet packed with lots of ppl around town. I remember going into the cafe(forgotten what it was called) were church it was on corner on a Saturdays morning with my mum every time we went to town she use to buy me a bun n a drink of pop (good old day in 80s). We use to go into Woolworths and buy stuff I remember nicking some sweets I got in trouble outside thou from me mum one min I didn't have any sweets then the next she saw me with some I got told off really badly...I never listened to her any how cos the next time I went with her I did it again but this time she never saw me. Which I put them in my pocket I had loads of sweets n never got court.. The good old days wish they was back again...

A beautiful town with loads of beautiful buildings and fine architectural details as long as the council doesn’t decide to knock them all down. 20 years since I’ve lived there and the number of demolished buildings is insane. The out of town shopping definitely is responsible for the decline. Many happy memories! Thanks for the video.

A few snapshots of Rotherham’s history:- 1) Built on an Iron Age border that took the Romans 40 years to conquer, before a Roman Fort was built. 2) One of the barons that forced King John to sign Magna Carta was a Rotherham Lad. 3) 18th century home to Lords Effingham and Rockingham who helped the USA gain independence 4) Home of the Rotherham plough that contributed so much to the Agricultural Revolution 5) Home to the Walker cannons, the quality of which enabled Nelson to double and triple shot his guns 6) Home to Mr Bailey inventor of the Bailey Bridge.

When you ask if you have been to the minster On that corner was the ringabells cafe. The bells. Sit and look at the church from there. Bells would ring Saturdays for weddings as I recall. Beautiful inside but not been in since the mid 70’s. Some beautiful buildings in Rotherham. Meadowhall ripped the heart out of the centre. Rotherham council over the decades completed the dissection ! Good video though. Captures what’s good beautifully!

I moved from town late last year...because I witnessed a machete attack. Same week someone else was stabbed. Then another a few weeks after that. I managed to move after 6 months. The biggest 3 problems are this... 1/the council moves exconvicts in because they receive funding for it. 2/the drug problem is out of hand and many drug users pretend to be homeless and beg money off shoppers. Putting people off shopping. The bigger the drug problem, the less people visit and then the more desperate the drug users become to get money to buy drugs and that increases crime and assaults 3/the council have pushed all the good shops out of town by increasing rent while the customers aren't coming. And then waste money constantly decorating the town and building things. Moving criminals in and pushing big business's out and wasting tax payers money only puts people off coming to town and the whole process is spiralling. We really need a different kind of council!

I grew up in Rotherham in the 1980's when the shops were amazing. C&A, Coopers toy shop, BHS cafe, Harpers book shop and the old imperial buildings before it was renovated. Then along came Meadowhall & Parkgate and changing shopping habits. Look at a lot of less well off towns around the country and they all look the same. The demise of all the big chains is an opportunity for small independents to rise again. Its amazing whats been achieved in the High Street area. I'm looking forward to the new Forge Island development.

This is ace. Did you notice the artwork on a lot of the buildings - we have an art trail! Edvard Munch's scream adorns the side of Subway on High Street (my favourite picture). You did catch the town on a nice day. It's just so weird to see so many people and mostly wearing masks. The pigeons all seem in good nick at the moment - they used to fall foul of the anti-pigeon wiring/netting and would often have bad injuries to their feet. Street cleaners have done a nice job, bless 'em. The architecture is very ... eclectic ... as you can see in this video. It always feels like Rotherham hasn't yet been finished, it is always a work in progress. The bit just before the railway station, is the new Forge Island Development, going to be a cinema and hotel complex - if it ever gets started.

What a beautiful day to take this video, there's old building and new building, each different size shops small ones n big ones, it must have been early to film this as there hardly no people about, Mind you thou there never is at lot off ppl about. especially when the council shut all the good shops up etc, Primark, m n s, blah, blah, blah. But there's nothing like the good old days in the 80s n early 90s, when shops was packed with ppl and there was loads off ppl about that's what you call a town but now it's a right shite hole, Apart from that really good tour of our town well done

I was brought up in Sheffield, but have lived in Rotherham for 35 years. All major outlets have shut, even Boots and Wilco have gone recently. There's nothing to go into Rotherham for. One of the worst things they did was chop town in half by pedestrianising the road below the bus station. Everything is at Parkgate, which has the most inadequate roads to get there you could imagine and creates horrendous traffic jams. Town centres everywhere are slowly dying, but Rotherham has to be one of the worst.

I'm from Sheffield but live in Rotherham. It's town centre is terrible. One of the worst I've been to. So many drunks and druggies hanging about and you get stared at regularly because they wonder what you're doing there. With parkgate and Meadowhall close there's not much reason to venture there.

Great town in the 80's, had a very local family feeling back then with some family run shops. Sadly like most towns slipped away to shopping centres and people who have no love or respect for a place. Still looks nice enough but add the people and it's a place you don't want to go.

why do people think Rotherham is a brilliant place, why ? Rotherham was at one time when i was younger it was a busy thriving town and had brilliant shops till this council knacked it all, there is nothing in this town now, we had good shops it was so busy on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays and Saturdays, now you or lucky to see half a dozen people in the town centre it is sad, Woolworth has gone British Home stores has gone , M & S has gone, some people will not remember if they are youngsters shops like Ray Allen men shop the chicken shop All St Square, Van Allen bottom of Doncaster Gate and Wellgate, Davy Cafe, Graftons, White Hall Restaurant, Boots in High Street, Masons Top of High Street, Burtons Men Shop, Rotherham Market that stood in place of the Rotherham Police Station , Main Street, Telling Butchers , Ellis Fruit and Veg , Spights Tripe shop, and many more the council in creased the rates for shop and they shops closed, another was Wakefield Army Store, Rotherham will never see any thing like that again nor the people of Rotherham .

@davidnewey6049
@davidnewey6049 3 жыл бұрын
With all due respect this happened long before online banking, this council caused untold deprivation to Rotherham town center, I ask another question why do the public back this council up, yes they have done some good things in this town but they have just made it a town that no one really wishes to come too. Think on this if a person outside South Yorkshire ask someone from Rotherham where they are from they say Sheffield because the people of Rotherham don't wish others to know where they really come from. Online shopping sorry if that is your opinion I respect that but i lived through the late 60s and 70s and Rotherham was rendered a vacant town by the greed of the local Authority .
@twistedsister2568
@twistedsister2568 3 жыл бұрын
I remember it well. Those were the days it was a thriving town. I agree RMBC have destroyed it they would rather see empty shops than lower the rates. They give cheap shops free rates for a year then they close and move on while established shops had to pay excessive rates. Who wants to walk round a town centre full of drunks, druggies and gangs of Asian makes. No thanks

Here go the shop we lost not because of Meadowhell but because of the greedy local authority , Washington men's shop, British home store, marks and Spencer, Woolworth, Ray Allen's men's shop, Sexy Rexy, Victor de Roek , Grafton bread shops, chicken shop, Thornton's, Blyth model dairy, Cantor's Henry Wigfall and son, True Form Shoe shop, Giles glasses shop Wellgate, Van Allen's bottom of Do castergate,. Wakefield Army Store, high street And Howard Street , Pecks, Sheffield Woodhouse Furniture store, Denham, Wellgate , Bradwells Handbag shop in hight street, brooks friend shop in All St Square, brooks and Brookes Taboconist top of high street, the Empire picture palace , bottom of ship hill, boots high street, odeon we went alone every Saturday kids, morning Hopalong Cassidy, land of the giants, cartoons and so on, kid have never enjoyed thing like that. There was the old market, Gray's Butchers, Tellings Butchers , Stockdale's fruit stall. Ellis Fruit Stall, just a few but there was many more, Saturday teatime go and get a couple of joints fruit and veg and other goods all with a £5.00 and still have money left. There was White Hart. Gas board next to Chapel on the Bridge, Sheffield furnishing Company, Cooper's toy shop on Doncaster gate, Britain Brothers Doncaster Gate , Smoker Hall above Britain Brothers, Sound Of Music in Howard Street top of market.so if people think Rotherham is a good town center then you either can't remember when it was, are you done really know what you are talking about sorry.
