The ball in the cartridge is called an "Agitator". Its purpose is to break liquid tension when the ink gets stuck at the top so that you don't get a break in ink flow.

Hey Elliot I've been using the Rotring Rapidograph ISO pens for years and have been happy with them. Also the ink cartridges for those have the blackest ink I've ever used. Much darker than the carbon ink and it's waterproof.

Rotring been around for ever in Europe. High tech pens. I personally love this art calligraphy pen because of balance and light weight, used them since 35 years back. Not sure if they still make these.

you referring to the red ring, which in fact is the name brandname -'rotring' wich means red ring, I have several rotrings-art pens. I like the 0.9 the most for drawing.

The one I bought has some sort of fault straight from the Factory. I have the exact same one, EF on the cap. It is trash. So I stick with my Fine liners and Lamy Safari (great pen)

only now discovered this interesting video. You can put a second cartridge in the pen, back to back with the one that is in use. If one is empty, you just swap.

Rotring Drawing Ink is waterproof (it could not possibly be anything else) and takes less than 30min to dry up obviously depending on the material being used

Hey Elliot! Good to hear you're interested in fountain pens. I got into them about a year ago myself, for a couple of reasons: I was sick of cheap, dried-out ballpoints for writing, and I was curious about the discontinued Koh-I-Noor art pen that Stan Sakai has hoarded. So I've been looking at fountain pens, on and off, for drawing and inking, and the waterproof inks that can be put in them. One of my first buys was one of these: an extra-fine Rotring art pen. Have to say I was pretty disappointed in it. For one thing, the extra-fine nib is _huge_ compared to the way and what I use to draw. German nib sizes skew that way, apparently. For properly fine and extra-fine nibs, japanese pens look like the way to go. Also, like you say, there's no thick and thin in the line. No spring, no flex; it's a 'nail', as they say in pen circles. That was a big disappointment to me. It was little different to drawing with one of the fineliner pens I've used since I was a kid - except a bit 'fancier' because of the _look_ of the nib. Not enough. I've known about the Platinum desk pen that carbon ink was designed for, but never got around to buying one despite the cheap price. Instead I jumped on the limited run of 'safety' pens made by Noodler's. A kind of pen suitable for india ink because the nib and feed can be retracted into the body, immersing them in the ink reservoir and preventing them from drying and clogging. Trouble is, everything else clogged. The carved screw threads in the retracting mechanism couldn't cope with the amount of wrenching needed to get it to actually retract or extend. The nib, a flexy thing from their Creaper pens, was better than Rotring, but still chunky, and no other dip nib I tried would fit and allow a good flow of ink. I actually ruined the nib and feed a couple of weeks ago, trying to pull the pen apart for cleaning. The rest of it is still soaking in a sonic cleaner. Dunno what I'm going to do with it. Pity, because apart from nib troubles and getting the bleedin' parts to move, it did keep the ink wet, and was nice for drawing. I probably should've gone straight for the Platinum pen, or put some carbon ink in a cheap Creaper, but instead I backed the IndiGraph pen on kickstarter. This one's supposed to keep india ink wet with a water reservoir in the cap. I hope it works, and that I can swap the nib for something more flexy, because this pen mania is getting expensive...

Pen addiction is indeed real, however, if I may suggest one... Sounds like you may be interested in a technical pen. I LOVE fountain pens, however, I draw a lot. And for my purposes, I find the line length is simply too thick. Technical pens give a consistent line, at the right thicknesses and with the right paper can be quite smooth writer's. I'm not sure what your purposes are, I assume drawing, but if you're interest Koh-I-Noor makes a kit of 7 different nibs (think Pigma microns-one line width per pen). Alternatively, more people tend to prefer the Rotring Isograph. Same idea, just different brand. Both have a refillable ink reservoir. Rotring also makes a rapidograph which uses cartridges if tbats your Forte. I love mine! Bit of maintenance, but you can tell they're quality and will last forever

I have the carbon desk pen, it's definitely a 'nail' but I like it for that reason. They take a while to break in though. The best flex nib available off the shelve is probably the pilot namiki, but to get some real good flex you probably want to get a Spencerian modification. That will cost you around 150 dollars I think.

@@vangoghsseveredear Thanks! Though I've been drawing with pigment liners since I was little. Staedtler's version. What I was looking for was the control of a pen but with just a bit of line variation, like a brush. I think I found something. See my other reply here.

@@bluntobjct I've since received the Indigraph pen and the Platinum Carbon pen. Both went into a drawer soon after trying them! I'm getting the best results with the last thing I tried; a simple trick that people have been talking about and even selling for a while: a cheap Jinhao X750 fountain pen with a Zebra G nib fitted. I made the conversion myself, which took some pushing, but it works nicely. I read the warnings about pigment ink clogging and drying in the feed, and the nib rusting after a while, but I widened the feed channel a little, chose a nano-pigment ink (Rohrer and Klingner Sketchink), and store it horizontally. So far I've noticed few problems, even after letting it sit for a couple of months. I guess I got a pen with a good cap seal. All the same, I think I'll dismantle it for a good clean when the current load of ink runs out.

I think most waterproof fountain pen inks are not immediately waterproof. Like, you have to wait like a half hour or more and then it becomes completely waterproof.

I have this pen and also the Lamy Safari. Although the Safari isn't sold specifically as an Art pen, but compared to the Rotring, imo the Lamy Safari is better. Btw They are both in the same price range too.

Do it! Make more "pen" videos, types of ink you prefer ect. People are interested in this stuff it's good content and when people ask you can just tell them you have a series of videos on KZfaq explaining it and point them to your channel instead of explaining it to everyone who asks. Maybe do the next vid one on Pentel brush pens since you use that one alot.

@@JERKMONGER Yeah an extra $100+ for shipping is crazy. I was thinking about getting one of the smaller ones then turning the board sideways. I don't know if that would work well or if I'd just end up with a crick in my neck.
