Fiction effects reality in the way that allegory and fears and politics can be expressed in a societies time. Horror often reflects the cultural fears of its era. King kong was a racist depiction of the eras fears of cultures clashing and the ‘other’ Vampires are an ever growing example of a fear of decadence, mortality, sexual freedom. Sci-fi effects reality as our hopes for society. The Shape of Water isn’t “promoting interspecies sex” People aren’t going to have sex with fish because they watched the deaf woman fuck the fish. But they may understand disability, sexism, and communication a bit better. The direct one to one moral comparison of fiction=reality is a recent phenomenon and one that is more harmful than any mutant turtles kissing each other.
