CURRENT SCHEDULE
Expect a new video every Sunday and Wednesday at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a KZfaq channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

The bales will sweat, anyhow. You may get a green slime on the outside, which is really nice when you take the netwrap off😝, but inside will be fine. Cows are going to nibble on it some, and putting the knives up really will help you get the most from the stalks. Great video!

Hiya Ryan! I love your videos. You're by far my favorite farming KZfaqr. I've always been curious, how many hours a night sleep do you average during harvest? I'm a retired trucker, so I'm used to not sleeping, but the hours you guys put in is just amazing. Be well!

Thats 100 tons of dry bedding/feed put up in a day. I hope the mollases test on 50 bales for feed pays additional dividends. That kuhn with knives sure rolls out a pretty bale. ? With the foundation on the old barn, can a pit be built under the old free stall barn roof after removal of the first floor concrete and the side walls are shored up? It would be great to recycle and feed is in the yard. Big Amish job. Good reason to add a rock breaker attachment. Save back your hardwood saw logs for a future farm event. The local dealer will jump at the opportunity to demo a saw mill and you get the timbers and lumber to build with from the farm. OLF stores his cut wood in the dairy barn. All you need is a pallet jack and we all know how dam hot a hay loft is all summer. Natural kiln.

Maybe it's just the camera but they look like baby bales. I would love to batwing the corn stalk but don't want to take that much of the stalks. We use a Vermeer 605N corn stalk special and do about 2500 bales a year. The bales will weigh from 1500lbs to 2000 lbs. We have just raked the stalks with the rake set as light as we can to leave as much of the stalk as we can. I don't mind if they are a little damp as we tub grind most of them for feed and if they are just right they will install kind of like silage makes great feet for cows.

Have you thought about experimenting with the colour as some seem to swear by white and green as it keeps it cooler while others swear by the black wrap as they feel the heat helps the ensiling process. The biggest issue we find is quality as one of the more common wraps here that is usually green we find tends to split and or go holey when flattens while the premium manufacturer branded (JD, CNH etc) wrap that is normally black doesn't.

The knives will help after all with hay it was 260lbs difference between cut and uncut bales. I personally think the savings will help but if ya did custom baling I think ya see how big of a difference the knives really make

@ArnieD17

The cattle do eat some as food so guess you can call it fodder versus bedding.
@MorganOtt-ne1qj
@MorganOtt-ne1qj 8 ай бұрын
Depends on several things. Totally dry is mainly bedding, no palatability. 60%+ moisture is almost silage, but mainly fiber unless you add ammonia at wrapping. All bales are feed if molasses is added and allowed to soak in, but feed value is low, but better than snowballs. Great question 👍

Call me stupid, but why are you wrapping something used for bedding?
@MorganOtt-ne1qj
@MorganOtt-ne1qj 8 ай бұрын
You are not stupid. Wrapping is to prevent rain and snow from saturating into the bales and losing 15%+ in the first year. Almost a disposable shed, in a way. Great question!

Hey Ryan, Hannah, Dad and Travis and the 2 managers. Ryan that is a good deal putting the knives in but what happens to the ears of corn when they hit the knives? Does it shell the corn or do they turn sideways and go on through? I know the ears of corn is the main reason the cows go through the fodder is to find the corn. And yes the Kuster's are a well oiled machine that really work very well together. OK I want make this long. Take care, Take it easy and TRUST JESUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes Sir but I have heard Ryan and Travis doing cattle video's and saying the cows are going thru and looking for corn. Maybe the new combine gets 100% of the corn and their is no corn what so ever. Thank you for your input Sir.@@MorganOtt-ne1qj

@@larrysheriff8251 👍 No combine gets 100%, but the lost stuff usually hits the ground. But stalks smell like corn, especially after wrapping them.
