Welcome to Grain & Steel! Today i'm walking through this black walnut and epoxy end table build. I always have a great time making these tables, and I try to include as much info as possible, so if you wanted to, you could DIY them too.
I also build custom tables for your specific needs, so please do contact me via instagram or head over to my etsy shop if you're interested in having me build you one!
Fortunately for you all, at the time of this upload, this table is also still available, so if you're interested, click the link below, or DM me at GrainNSteel on Instagram!

When making a black epoxy fill, have you considered using scrap wood to fill in? Saves a lot of epoxy, money and weight.

For sure! If I were to do a bigger table id def consider doing that. This one was just a little guy, so I didnt bother, but yeah. Definitely for a dining table or large coffee table!

Your work is absolutely gorgeous! I’m really curious to know how you got into woodworking. Maybe you can do a video telling us that story while you’re working on a new piece. You’re such a well rounded artist ❤

Thank you Julia!! I've been woodworking since highschool. I didn't have access to a shop for a while and I put a lot of time into the music, so I wasn't really doing it, but i've always loved it. Trying to find a good balance between music and this now!

Beautiful piece. Cant wait to see more of your work. A couple of recommendations: - You should use stops or clamps, and a stable working surface, when you're cutting. I was on edge every time you were cutting for fear that the table might collapse or some accident may happen as you were cutting towards your bracing hand. - Also, the constant shakiness of the work surface coupled with the timelapse made me a bit nauseous. Otherwise, very enjoyable video from a new sub!

Hey man, great video and nice table. A little tip as far as KZfaq goes, if you're trying to make woodworking commentary kind of like Blacktail studio or Foureyes Furniture then it's not a bad idea to just write out more of a script for the voiceover so that you can avoid any "um"s, "uh"s, and "things like that"s. It'll really take the videos to the next level I think.

Also, I don't know your exact situation as far as your shop goes, but bright shop lights and more ambient and natural light for the woodworking portions would really look good.

Wonderful. Work of art. Question. What would you use if you wanted a higher gloss finish?
@GrainAndSteel
@GrainAndSteel Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I appreciate it. The thing I really like about odies oil is that the sheen goes however high you sand it. So if I was looking for a higher gloss I could sand up to maybe 1000-2000 and it would be nice and shiny. I'm a big fan of the flat/satin look so I like to stop at around 320 grit.

Everything went well, but me personally don't like that black spot in the center. To mask it will be good to take some wood dust and mix it with the ca glue. Overall great build!
@GrainAndSteel
@GrainAndSteel 9 ай бұрын
I agree. I originally used sawdust and glue, but it was too big of a spot, so it was super noticeable, so I just went with the black, so it didn't seem like I was trying to hide it.

Could you tell us, what epoxy brand do you use? (maybe link to amazon?). And what is the mix proportion? A week ago I tried mix, and still is to soft ;/
@GrainAndSteel
@GrainAndSteel Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I only use liquid glass deep pour epoxy. It works supeeeerrrr well and cures very hard and doesn't yellow quite as much as other brands i've used in the past. it's a 2:1(A:B) mix ratio.

Just a request since this video is billed as a how-to. When you say things like a step "was way harder than I thought it was going to be a d I'd do it differently next time"" it would be really useful go hear what didn't work and how you'd do it differently.
