YESSSS, I love that sound! ❤️ I also love the “completed”, filled-in appearance of the square drills and how the finished project looks. The rounds definitely take me less time to place, but it’s such a toss-up for me. I always select square now when I have an option between the two, but I’ll buy round when it’s a design I love and can’t pass up.

I agree that the round is much faster, but I recommend starting a square drill pattern from the center of the canvas or section, and working out to the edge. Much like laying tile in a floor. The lines come out much more straight.

A lot of people use the checkerboard pattern, but I don’t think it helps me keep them straight. I have had great luck doing them side-by-side, but I think it has a lot to do with the person and how steady their hands are. In the custom framing department I work in, I’ve seen some baaaad square drill paintings, and those are the people I recommend the checkerboard to. Thank you so much for your comment and feedback! I’m trying to find a good square drill one now. I did a round one, and the leftover sticky parts are still sticking to my hand and probably dust. Square is where it’s at!

try sealing it in with modge podge, it will keep the diamonds from falling out, and will cover the extra sticky parts. you can also try other types of liquid sealers as well. I hope this helps!

I ordered my first diamond paintings and I think I'll go with squares but start with a circle one. I think I'm going to like it since I'm a slow kind of person and would like the end to be as detailed as possible

Thanks for explaining the differences. I'm just starting out with diamond painting but I started doing cross stitch over 16 years ago so I went for the square drills right away since I like that tighter, more solid look and I'm mostly working with really small images. Once I learned how to make my own cross stitch patterns I found that it could carry over to a lot of different mediums (like loom beading, perler beading, anything that could follow a grid pattern) so I haven't actually bought any kits yet since I make my own. Probably another reason I prefer the square drills as the blank canvas only comes in white and will show between the round drills. I use GIMP (a free image manipulation software that's a bit like photoshop) to make the pattern. Then I usually port it to a cross stitch program to get a general idea of the colors needed and edit them until I'm satisfied because no program is perfect and sometimes the ones chosen aren't the best choice. It really helps that the drill colors follow the DMC floss color chart so it's a lot easier to guesstimate which colors are needed (although this is the older 447 one as several colors have been since replaced with new numbers/names or discontinued)

I've done 5 round ones and they went by super fast. And I recently got a 50 x 67 square and that one is taking me forever. But I love how the square looks so far. Personally I love square when I have time :3

ᴄʜᴇʀʀʏ ᴍᴀʀɪ Yes!! I feel the same way! The square drills are actually a little smaller than round (I confirmed that recently), and so that tiny bit makes a difference. But the finished piece is soooo worth it!!

I’m sure she meant centimeter and not inches. Most diamond paintings use the metric system instead of standard measurements.

Thank you for making this video! It was very helpful. I just started on square drills. I really love how the square drills fit tightly together to make a solid piece. All of your paintings are beautiful. I didn’t know you could buy paintings that big! I found out about round drills through your video. My sister and I found diamond painting last Monday and we are both completely addicted. I ditched the wax though and use poster putty instead!

I think whichever one you start with is the one you will like best. I do recommend getting a tool with the straight edge for keeping your lines straight, because it will drive you crazy if you don’t. Something like this is a sanity saver: amzn.to/3CgZAwF

A 40x50cm is about a 16x20”, which is a good size. The smallest I would go is probably a 12x16” or a 30x40cm.

Is the detail clearer on a round v square?. How do you select a square picture that wont look too pixelated? I'm having an issue on my squares where the detail is quite pixelated even though the picture is no less than 30 by 40.. I could go bigger but I'm wondering if theres any tips on identifying what you should look for when buying a square image to get the best detail.. any help will be greatly appreciated 😁

I'm doing my first diamond painting, 3 panels and round drills. You didn't look like you were using much strength to put them down. I PUSH! I'm having problems with "tags" that are causing some to pop up, and I'm worried about them, when I finish. My 12 yr old GrandDaughter did a small kit with square and said they were hard to get straight. You didn't look like you were having problems getting them aligned. I like the look of the square drilled painting. If I ever do this again, I think I will try that. Thank you for this video, because I was wondering about the differences.

I will tell you this…where you buy your diamond painting from makes all the difference. 😏 I don’t ever want to sound like a “diamond painting snob” {if there is such a thing 😂}, but over the last seven years, I have discovered that the better diamond painting companies have better drills & better adhesive on their canvases. Their drills fit the canvas better, and they stick to the canvas, because the adhesive is so high-quality, so you don’t have to worry about drills popping off. I’ve also learned that the square drills have a little edge on them that can make them not want to butt up on each other as tightly on some of the cheaper kits as it does in the more high-end kits. Some of the squares will be smaller than others in a “lower-end” kit, which is annoying when you’re sitting up close looking at it, but once you get it up on the wall, you’ll never notice it. Now I’m not gonna say that I don’t absolutely love some of the more affordable kits, and I will buy them anyway, because I love the “zen therapy” of diamond painting, but I know when I’m done, I will probably have to seal my painting to keep everything in place. Whereas with the other high-end companies, they have a guarantee that my drills will never pop off. One more thing, and not to be a salesperson here, but I just added a canvas adhesive to my online store {mbscreativesupplies} that will allow you to make your canvases a little more sticky if you find that you need more adhesion, so that you don’t have to push so hard in the future. I hope you find all of this information helpful!

Nicole Call I’m soooo happy you found this video helpful! Thank you for the feedback! I have had great experiences from Diamond Art Club (diamondartclub.com), but most of their paintings are very large, pretty expensive (although worth it!), and may be a little intimidating if you’re a beginner. They are absolutely stunning though! I have almost 20 of DAC diamond paintings now 😳. I also like Paint With Diamonds (paintwithdiamonds.com), and I haven’t bought any from Home Craftology (HomeCraftology.com), but I’ve framed some beautiful completed pieces from their company. Michael’s Arts & Crafts has some Diamond Dotz, although it’s not a huge selection. Timni Arts on Amazon has some good quality paintings also. There are a lot of other companies who sell on Amazon, but I always read reviews first, because you want to make sure they are reputable & good quality. I hope this list will help you! ☺️

I've started my first like last year. It's considered round I guess? But the different is that there are 3 different sizes of each color. The art I did is a wall clock and I love the shine and bling blings hehhee

Thanks so much for this video! I'm working on my 1st sqare dp and it has been challenging! I'm beginning to think I'm too much of a 'perfectionist" for it as I'm never happy with how the drills lay and the fact that I can't get them perfectly straight. It's supposed to be a gift but I'll have to see how it looks when I'm farther along. I only have about 2 hours so far. It also doesn't seem to have the same glimmer as the round, but again, we'll see as I know square generally do not have as many facets as the round. Also, it's from DAC so the quality is great. If it turns out badly it will strictly be error! Again, thank you for a great video!

Mominator7 If it makes you feel any better, since I’m a custom framer, I have framed a lot of DPs. Once a square drill piece is behind glass in a frame, it’s hardly noticeable or not noticeable at all that the drills aren’t straight. If you use a light board to DP, you’ll notice every single gap! When there is no direct light, it will look fabulous!! Don’t give up!

Am I wrong in thinking that I could use square diamonds on a canvas bought with round diamonds, I've bought hundreds of square drill packets in every colour possible so I could theoretically substitute the round for square on a little canvas prints, just wondering if is worth a try?any suggestions, please

Thank you for this video it's helpful. I'm on my second diamond painting, both are round and not very big. I've ordered three more but idk what size they are... I wanted to know which would be best for a custom, I think I'll pick square to get a less pixelated finish!

For a custom, I definitely say to go as large as you can afford. The minimum size I would buy is a 40x50, which is a 16”x20”. Join my FB group so you can show us what you are working on! ☺️

Hey hi, I started my first diamond painting and I have boggle that needs to be put to rest if you may. My square drills have two types in the packet. Some are square top flat square shaped and some are square top diamond shaped. Both are the same size. Do I use both or only one type of them. There seems to be an even mixture of both in the packets but I would have thought they would have all needed to be the same??? Any help please would be super appreciated

If you watch any of the “First Look” videos I have posted about Diamond Art Club paintings, I always give you the size and then roll out the canvas and show you the size of that particular DP. I’ve been doing squares, but started my first round one yesterday. I’m using a metal ruler that has 6 rows of holes, and it works so well. So far all my lines are straight

Just purchased my first diamond painting and chose a round one. Question though is it easier to start at the top and peal the film down or start at the bottom and peal up.

You will find what works best. Since I am right-handed, I tend to start in the bottom left corner and work my way over left-to-right. Then I rotate the piece and do that for each side. I finish in the middle. That is all a personal preference that you will figure out as you work. ☺️

That’s what most people say who have done square drills. I honestly just both! I’m working on a square and a round right now. I’m so much faster with a round and love the sparkle, but the square is just so complete looking.

I am working on my first project. Have you framed your diamond projects? I wish that the 1 inch white edge around it did not have any writing on it for easier framing. How do you do it?

The round ones I guess are quicker to do bc you don’t have to worry about their orientation. The square ones can only go one way so it’ll take longer to be more specific

I have done round drills and just started on my first square drills painting. I have notice that the top of the square drills got two different shapes. One top with edges that line up with the drill edge and the other top 45 degree with the drill edge. I want to ask if randomly placing these two types of drills would affect the overall "shine" of the finished product? Or would it be better to use the same tops in one section? Thanks.

I think it gives off more sparkle if you just place them randomly...that way the light catches from different angles. 😊

Hello! I am Spanish and amateur to diamond painting, I want to make one of 120cm x 80cm, from a wedding photo, I can choose between square and round, I like the round by the brightness and the square because it looks more complete, but in a photo of two people would be better the round to make it look better? Since the human face has many curves? I don't know if I explain well... What do you recommend?

For a piece that large, it would be fine to do the round drills. You should still have enough detail, but it will give you more sparkle and will take less time to complete.

do you find that the round one or square one look more sparkly compared to the other? I feel like the round ones I see look more sparkly but I'm not sure if it's actually the case, because of the shape? or if it just tends to appear that way on camera for some reason?

I always thought the round ones were more sparkly, until I recently. I’m starting the believe the newer “high-end” square kits are arriving with more facets. I just launched a video yesterday that I actually zoomed in very closely to show the facets on the square drills, because I noticed how sparkly they were compared to past experience. I did a DAC round one first and it's so shimmery, and just finished a smaller square. It seems that square is less shimmery than round, but it looks and feels cooler than the round. The downside to round is that it's still sticky in places and I keep finding hairs stuck. Definitely needs to be sealed quickly. I would suggest beginners do a round first for sure just to get it down.

Catalyst Pets most people frame them & keep them. As a custom framer, I also framed a bunch of these for gifts throughout the year for my customers. I personally hoard all of mine 😂, because I enjoy the process and don’t know if anyone would like something like this. Diamond paintings definitely don’t suit everyone’s style.

At about 6:12 you said you are going to Breyer them......what is that? Newbie here! So I don't know what mt favorite is yet. My Sister bought me one that I was looking at on Amazon for my birthday. We don't have alot of money so I can't spend alot on these, especially when trying it out. It is a round drill 40X50 cm that is of a cowboy riding a bucking bronco (I am a girl raised on old movies, mostly old westerns like Roy Roger and Dale Even) anywho I just got 2 rows across and then a 3 inch square done. I and reasurch that it is good to replace the plastic with parchment squares, and I think all that plastic would have driven me crazy. Right now I am in the awkward stage of trying to get settled in to the set up. I am have a tiny table I am using (this is my watch/listen to tv and keep my hand busy thing). Trying to find the best way to do it and the most comfortable. Do you recommend a light pad for low light places? Lighting isn't the best and there aren't any close plug-ins. I think the rounds are going to take me just as long as square because I like rows to be straight if I can help it, and even though I where glasses because I can't see distance, I still have to stop pretty close to see what I am doing. So I know it will get better, but right now it is a very dragged out and somewhat painful experience right now. I hope someday to try a square drill painting.

When I first started diamond painting about two years ago, I didn’t have any special tools. A “brayer” is like a handheld rolling pin that is designed for arts & crafts. None of the light pads are cordless, unfortunately, but if you have an extension cord or a surge protector you could use, that would help. I went without a light pad for a long time. erith g Well, to be honest, I haven’t finished one this size yet. 😂 I am working on two at the same time, and I’m also working on several paint-by-numbers. I work and help take care of my 3-year-old grandson, but I think if I dedicated a few hours a day, it would take about 80 hours.

How do you keep the dust off the round drill finished painting?

When I’m done, I use a firm brush to sweep off the final piece before I seal it with an adhesive called Tombow Aqua Liquid Glue and/or frame it with anti-reflective glass. That seals it & then you don’t have to worry about dust sticking to the exposed adhesive.

Circle is easier and faster square is too tedious but does look more detailed. On my second diamond painting it's a square my first was a round

For my first go at it I purchased a 2 in 1 pack of the round drill paintings. Did one of them and then the next 3 I've done have all been square drills. For myself I prefer the square even tho they do take longer. I think they sparkle more than the round and I just prefer the overall finished look better. I've started the 2nd round one but just can't bring myself to finish it because I like the square so much. I gave the 1st round one away and will probably do the same with the 2nd if I ever finish it :)

I actually prefer the square ones because if u make a mistake of placing it like 1 mm away you can push it with another one and there will be no problem

I think every person has their own favorite. I still love both equally, and I select the type of drill I want for a painting depending on the image and size. I love the sparkle of the round, but I love the finished piece of the square.

Square drills are 2,5x2,5mm each and round drills are 2,8mm. so yes, the round ones are larger.

Kylie most companies offer round, but some will give you a choice. I think HomeCraftology has a choice of round or square. Diamond Art Club comes in one or the other, but it tells you which one in the details. Square drills are newer on the market than round, so it is just a matter of time before both will be offered in every design, I’ll bet!

Jaden 0908 if you are new, I would say to start with a round drill diamond painting. The gemstones are round, but they’re easier to place than the square ones, and you may not get as frustrated with it. Since most diamond paintings are measured in the metric system, I would say get at least a 40x30 or larger. That is almost the same size as a 12” x 16”. It looks like the large round is way more pixelated than the square even being large so I guess you would need a really huge canvas to make it blend anywhere even close to what the square drills do. I was watching another comparison and the lady showed how the finished square drills are more shimmery and the round are more glittery in the finished work.

Round drills have more facets, so they definitely have more sparkle. I look at the round drills in a couple of different ways...they are faster to complete, because you don’t have to be as perfect, but you definitely lose detail. At a distance (3 feet) the pixelation is barely noticeable. I usually buy square drills now for that reason, but I never seem to have time to finish.

UGGGHHH I wish I would have watched before I just ordered a Custom size 60 x 80 square drill. I've never worked with square drill and I'm worried that this size will too big to frame. Now I know that with square you can go smaller. It's a gift from my DIL.

Susan Highsmith well, I think it may take you a while to complete, but the clarity of the image will be AMAZING. That size is 23.6 x 31.5 and there are frames at Michael’s that are 24x32”, which may work. Since I do custom framing, I know it would fabulous done with a custom mat and frame, but it will cost quite a bit because of the size. I would recommend taking it into a Michael’s framer and letting them give you some advice and an estimate once you are done! Hope this helps you relax and feel better about your purchase!! 😊

Cold Cuber not really. I don’t make anything off of their company, but their quality is phenomenal. Most of your better quality diamond paintings are over $25. HomeCraftology is great along with PaintWithDiamonds. You may find some cheaper ones at Amazon, but pay attention to the reviews. Some are horrible.

Cold Cuber I don’t know, because every diamond painting seller on Amazon is different. Amazon is like eBay in a way, because they have their own products, but they also have individual sellers who sell their own items. There are hundreds of thousands of sellers on Amazon, so I have no way of knowing who is good or bad. That is why I try to read the reviews first before I order anything.

I think you can order one from Amazon, but I have been getting them in my kits. You may get one too. Usually it will be a 3-, 4- or 6- drill placer.
