Rover 75: Work begins! Plenum drains! Cabin filter SOAKED!

Yes, I saved the ECU from a soaking, just in time! The plenum, or scuttle drains on a Rover 75/MG ZT are a VERY common issue. They get clogged, water collects and eventually soaks the ECU. Undesirable. It also soaks the cabin filter, so that was replaced at the same time.
Much of the info was gleaned from the incredibly helpful Rover 75 and MG ZT Owners' Club. the75andztclub...

It really has. I wasn't keen when It was launched back in the day - thought it looked like a poor man's Jag - but it's really grown on me in the last 20 years, especially now that 90% of the cars on the road are SUVs and look like Korean running shoes with wheels. Or maybe I just got old. Ironically the 75 now looks much classier than the Mondeo-based Jags of that era.
@soundseeker63
@soundseeker63 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I would agree. Better than the 3-Series on which it was based in fact. But then it was heavily criticised at the time for looking too old fashioned. Now it just looks quite classic and timeless rather than obviously late 90s and dated.
@edgarbeat275

@@rich_edwards79 I think it looks better than the Jags of the same era. I thought that even back in the day. Also it just gets better with the estate. Ian Mcallum styling for estate. I just watched Jonny interview with Ian. Every line saloon or estate is just right. Few cars have that complete form line.

Also I do think the V8 is like a modern P5 / P6 a classic fore sure. Imagin had they done a coupe pillar lass (I can't spell😀) A very underrated car when launched I was just starting high school. Even then I was keen on car design. The Rover remember had that keeping up appearances image one foot old man image (yes Victor had a honda) prior to the 75. The 75 really condensed that early mid 90s bubble shape with a bit more definition in the face. The headlamps and bonnet line being my fave part. Least was the chrome strips. Like any car a compromise design wise given Rovers then situation pretty good. That MG V8 coupe thing I forget name such a shame it came too late. The 75 had a retro image styling I'll admit not full on as the Nissan Figaro Retro it took retro too it's limit without looking tacky or too cute. I like that it's not overly aggressive. Find a good one base or top of the line they are nice cars. Me personally find a poverty spec car just for rarity. I own a very early C2 Audi 100 Gls but to me the holy gmail is the Ls 1.6 not the top of the line 5E they have simply rusted away. I am an artist and have pondered the 75 a few times always with a good feeling. A Modern BMW or Bangel BMW arrrrrgggh.

Ah the joys of 75 ownership!! I remember doing that job on my MG ZT but it was relatively dry and drains clear! Although I was fanatical about clearing leaf debris from around the base of the windscreen and around the wipers. One thing I did experience by complete surprise was a swimming pool in my boot after leaving my MG parked up unused for around a month or so, maybe the angle it was parked but somehow water was flooding in and not draining anywhere! Only noticed it the day I was showing a potential buyer of my car, he wasn't impressed! My wife added, 'it'll dry out, it's only a bit damp!!' 😯🤔😁 It was a swimming pool lol, I had to joke, 'and it comes complete with built in swimming pool! ' 😁🤔

I found a rear swimming pool in my Fabia when I first got it. The rubber drain valve plugs in the wheel tray had sealed solid. I released and cleaned them with a squirt of WD-40. That was 12 years back; it hasn't happened since.
@ferrumignis
@ferrumignis 3 жыл бұрын
@@frglee The drain plugs in the wheel well are not valves, and there should be no water entering the boot area to require draining! On the Fabia this is most always a problem with the rear vents which are located under the light clusters behind the bumper. These are plastic assemblies with a rubber flap to only let air out of the cabin, but they very commonly leak where the assembly is supposed to be sealed to the bodywork.

would of got in from 3 points, rear light seals (seeing as you put zt not zt-t im guessing its a saloon) get them replaced with the ones on the 75zt owners club cheap as chips and a single piece rather than a split cut, water getting in via side trim clips (I used mastic on mk old mk2 75 ) or from under the back window as the clips for the window trim fail (window out job or as I did on my mk1 lots of mastic when dry over the clips from inside the boot). Lucky you didn't have the highline satnav as thats in the wheel well and would of been drowned.

We bought my wife a replacement van a few years ago. Here in Canada it was called a Chevrolet Venture. You had the same one over there under Vauxhall called the Sintra. Because the air bag warning light would not go out, and it had a crack in the windshield, the dealership didn't want it. The lady who owned it had just put four brand new tires on it, new front brakes, and a wheel alignment. We bought it from her direct for really cheap, and eventually there was a problem with a sensor. Can't remember which right now, but a mechanic friend replaced it for us at his house. After about half an hour of removing parts, he said he might as well check the air filter since he was there. I asked him if he had to go through all that just to check the filter, and he said yes.

Enjoyed this video. I agree that the spyhole mod mentioned is not particularly necessary. It's pretty easy to remove three scuttle clips on passenger side, one plastic screw, unclip about 18 inches of bonnet seal and slide out the plastic tray. You can see a lot more than if peering through a grommet hole.

The items shown at 20:40 and 20:50 go together. The first part is the ABS pump motor, and would normally be attached to the bottom of the second part, the ABS pump/valve/controller assembly. Pretty sure that fuel pump is not a Rover 75 part, but may have been bought to bodge on in place of the original under bonnet pump. The original is a longer cylindrical shape and has a different style of connector.

A quick tip for draining the Plenum. Drill a 1" Hole in the Secondary Cover over the Plenum, (that's the one that is a bit of a bitch to remove without removing the Screen Valance) and if you get something long enough that is pliable but also strong, like Net Curtain Wire, you can then in future just remove the First Cover and poke the Curtain Wire through the Hole and locate the Drain and clear it from there..... Job done! You can plug the hole with a Rubber Bung. Yes, those two bits were the ABS. That semi circular bit of plastic is a part of your Instrument Binacle at the top. I noticed it was missing. Some Rover engineering comfounds me. On earlier Rovers, the ECU was on the front corner of the inner wing, so was quite exposed. As a remedy they move it to the windscreen scuttle, which has water drainage problems!

Fuel Burning Heater for the Win as well. (If it works will help on those cold mornings) Also remember the extra cable tie on the bonnet release, as things get interesting if you cant open the bonnet :)

@@jusb1066 not so...depending on make/model...from mid 90's common..very late models 2019/2020..some manufacturers now do not install at factory because the owner has a choice of aftermarket ones..HEPA, activated carbon, cheap, expensive etc. Plus if the factory doesn't fit it...they don't pay for it! The hole/cover is there.....not the filter.

Strangely I did exactly the same job on my last Vectra. A lot less of a faff but equally as satisfying when the water drained out. A tinkering opportunity missed missed.

Ian, a very worthwhile mod is the updated crankcase breather. BMW changed it from a foam filter that easily clogged to a small twin swirl pot that clips in its place. My 75 has just sailed through the MOT with very clean emissions. Get rid of the K&N filter and just use a standard one, utterly pointless, and can actually cause MAF sensor problems if accidentally over oiled (which is not a precise science) Loving the HubNut tinkering. Keep it up!

I scrapped one the other week I just couldn't afford to keep it going was a diesel estate version with only 120,000 but was falling to bits apart from the engine and gearbox was solid. everytime I fixed something it wasnt long before the next issue. my dad wont get rid of his even though hes gone througb about 5 ally blocks. Just a shame they could have been great.

Love it that Rover definitely had a few pints on a Friday down at Rover Design Labs with their German mates. Can just see it now, 'Ok, boss we need to put the ecu somewhere. Have loads of space inside the car why dont we put it near the fusebox. Nice and dry there. '20 minutes later and 6 or 7 pints consumed' , 'Boss says why not stick it under the wiper blades and stick a drain underneath with a bit of badly sized filter holes to get air in and lets only do one side to stop the leaves', 'Ah, yep job done'. A few years later and Rover customer service notice a lot of early ecu replacements and think why is that happpening ?', Rings technical ' Oh yeah we stuck it on the bulk head just under the wind screen and paid extra for a water resistant jacket', Customer service 'So you put it where you expect water to go and collect', Technical 'Yep,Bye', Customer Service face palms and moves on lol

Cant wait for the follow up vids on the clutch and slave failure, the flooded boot, rear lights leaking, rear-windscreen trim leaking, drivers door handle not working, rear number plate lamp not working, broken springs , worn suspension parts, thermostat blowing, oh and the fan resistor issue, the best part of owning my 75 was when i got rid of it, the above faults are all well known faults so dont be tempted, they ate cheap and look good but are moneypits, you have been warned!

Looks like you read all my howto's on the OC!! You need to clear the 2nd lower plenum drain out under the servo. Easier done from underneath. Trim the flat ends off if not already done. No need to remove whole skuttle panel to replace pollen. Your passenger side wiper arm looks too high when parked. Needs re aligning :) @Jules75ZT Originator of the cooling fan gold resistor repair kit, Uprated Viton intercooler seals, Plenum drain leaf guard & the uprated Revotec cooling fan system :)

That diesel pump may be the one from the engine bay. My Uncle had one the same colour as this and had diesel pump issues which are apparently common. I replaced the in tank fuel pump with a one from a Peugeot HDI. The ecu also got drowned and he had to have it replaced which wasn't cheap. He eventually passed it on to my brother when the clutch slave cylinder gave up. My brother just kept topping the fluid up. We sold it with 240+k miles on it. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

I had a 2002 CDTi and put 125,000 miles on it, I had the warmed up XPower chip from new. A real trip down memory lane watching the annual rite of passage with the plenum drains and those clips!. Also, the ABS light and it might be the ABS wheel sensor which was a common problem - word of warning, it might be seized in place. I laughed when I saw that fan shroud (!) I got through two fans (Bosch and useless) and the eye-watering cost of replacement. In the end, I bought a Kenlowe pattern part, got all the bumper, crash bar, countless clips, nuts off, etc, etc, etc... and then wired it in. They are fabulous cars and I got a 2.5 V6 Connoisseur SE after that and had it for a couple of years because I always wanted the top of the range one.

It's best to do job like this in Summer. If you do it in sub zero temperatures the plastics become as brittle as uncooked pasta. Also very similar to the plenum blocking problem suffered by the Audi A4 B6 and SEAT Exeo (same car).
