Living in Australia for the last 20 years I forgot how much car's rust in Ireland. I remember looking at the back of my Dad's 5 year old Qashqai in Mayo, and it looked like the titanic! Nothing better than learning to weld on a 200 euro car. I would consider just biting the bullet and replacing the whole sill panel. Seems the whole panel is available. At least because its hidden behind the sill cover you don't have to worry about weld finish and paint. Give it a go, you will feel a whole lot happier knowing you fixed it yourself!

Ah, bugger. It's one of the reasons i didn't want to take the sill covers off on my 166. I knew it could have been potentially quite bad. I never did find out in the end.

Get yourself a MIG welder, and practice on scrap metal. It’s the best for beginners to learn and depending how handy you are, you’ll pick it up enough to be confident to patch. It’s the fabrication that can be quite difficult to master especially larger curved panels

This is why my wise sill covers come off every summer and are cleaned out and rust proofed :)
