Here is the full length version of Mr. Holland's unfinished song being hummed by the beautiful Rowena (Jean Louisa Kelly) as performed by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra during Rowena's final scene in the movie.
Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Michael Kamen - Kamen Rowena (Mr. Holland's Opus: Original Motion Picture Score [Soundtrack] ) - song #9

Yes indeed. She's everthing he could want - she's beautiful, she has the voice of an angel, and he feels she appreciates and understands his music in a way that his wife and son don't. But in the end, his morals and his love for his family wins out. In the scene where he dedicates a song to his son, we can really see how much he does love his family. It's really an awesome movie and a hauntingly beautiful song.

I believe this to be a highly under-appreciated movie. My only regret about it is that Rowena didn't return for Mr. Holland's "retirement" ceremony.

Totally agree... or maybe she was there and we didn´t saw her. Maybe Mrs. Holland wouldn´t be so happy if she did so. No... it´s good like it is. It´s very poetical. We all have sometimes a good influence on people that maybe we won´t see ever again.

Some things ,while precious, are best left in the past. For Mr. Holland this was Rowena. He gave her help and a break into her future and she reminded him of what was TRULY the most special to him...his family.

Terrific piece of music from a terrific movie. I wish a version of this was released with Rowena singing it--either words or as she did in the movie. All these years later that scene still moves me.

The further I go on this journey ... this wondrous journey called, 'Life' -- I know, I admit we all have had a 'Rowena' ... She could be of the same age -- or younger ... or older. She could be a he -- or even a pet named 'Max' or 'Molly' ... or .... or .... ... That Certain Someone who showed you that bright, shining soul that is, that became that template of yourself from your ever so long ago's. Ultimately, we all must keep our hearts & minds open to the friendship, the love and always ... the Lessons we needed to learn from our 'Rowena.' Onwards, ever onwards ... D.A.

Such a beautiful piece of music. Kamen was a genius. One funny thing I noticed: 4:40 - 5:40 onwards, the melody has been sampled in Michael Kamen's other composed movie - X-Men (Logan and Rogue). Like...he just re-used that little part, same tonality, same rhythm, everything. I noticed because Logan and Rogue has been one of my favourite scores ever since I watched the movie back in 2000 :). Well whatever, a composer is allowed to plagiarize from himself haha.

when i hear this beautiful theme, I think of that bittersweet scene with Holland and Rowena at the Bus stop. He so wanted to be with her, but understood too how unrealistic and immoral that would have been and because he loved and was so devoted to his wife and son.

I've wondered what happened to Rowena after she went to New York. Her story in the movie had a sadness about it. Like she was searching for something she was missing. I also wonder why she didn't return at the end for Mr. Holland's retirement. It's almost like something happened to her. The whole thing always felt kind of sad.
@asantesamuel13
@asantesamuel13 Жыл бұрын
It did feel sad. The story I made for her in my head was that she felt guilt for having feelings for him and ultimately needed to find her own path and mature before she made a huge mistake (an affair). But when she gets on the bus, I get a sinking feeling like she gets taken advantage of when she gets to the city. Something about the tone of the song gives me that feeling.

Mr. Holland: "Does anyone know the difference between the Ionian and Dorian scales?" (proceeds to demonstrate Ionian only) (later in the movie, Rowena starts improvising in Dorian) This is how I fell in love with the sound of the Dorian mode...

ty very much. They are an inseparable "pair" ----- great movies and their all-important soundtracks. Like "words and music". I suggest listening to one of the greatest soundtracks of all time...... Bernard Herrman's The Ghost & Mrs. Muir and then maybe the deeply moving ending to the original "Gloria" soundtrack by Bill Conti

sure. Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin. 10,000 miles is the lovely song sung by Mary Chapin Carpenter. We should "compare notes"one of these days as we seem to share the same movie likes. One more movie recommendation. It is a fairly recent movie and I generally despise new movies ---- they have no "heart", but that being said, please try watching October Sky. The father -son thing at the end always makes me cry.

ROWENA'S theme -- great! Leaving ROWENA out of the REUNION SCENE ... bad! Structure, folks -- structure. Screenwriting 101: 'When you introduce a gun, you use it ...' (and that goes for anything-person-prop, etc.) She -- Rowena -- was / IS the most important student of Holland's as she would go on to becoming the next Meryl Streep as well as the maturity she shared with Holland. Old souls. I mean, he was ever to tempted to leave his frumpy wife, yes? And there wasn't nary a word of her NOT BEING at the big ending scene -- 'An American Symphony' Oh well, maybe she'll be the sequel about his computer generated cat, 'Mr. Holland's Old Puss' (I slay me) D.A.

I felt the same way at first, but after watching it again years later and reading what others have to say, it's actually fitting that she's not there. You have to realize that Rowena wasn't part of his Opus. He didn't touch her life in the way he touched the lives of everyone at the Reunion. In fact, Rowena went AGAINST his advice, and dropped out of school. He was definitely tempted to go with her, but he realized that he was already where he belonged. She was a muse, nothing more. That being said, I am curious if she made it on Broadway or not.

Lucas Gallant I think one of the reasons the powers that be left her out of the final scene was because her departure was just before the final scene. It might have proved a bit of a shock to see her suddenly 10-ish years (older). That said -- maybe you're right ... We all need, must write our own 'Mr. Holland's Opus' -- in whatever it is that we do ... and be that direction giver to those who mean so much to us. We all have our woulda-shoulda-couldas ... and ultimately, our own "Rowena's." Good call, Lucas Gallant ! D.A.

I initially thought that too. But to be honest, it would have been too 'neat' for her to come back too. In real life, we touch people's lives but don't always know what happens to them. Real life is never as resolved as a movie can be. I kinda like that we don't know whether she made it or not. We cannot always know.

I agree -- but like many of us, we see the world, the idea, the promise and the prayer that is 'The Movies' through our own Rose Colored Glasses. I know I do ... still. But then, we leave the theater ... or turn off the DVD -- or the streaming ... and we are presented with Life-As-Is. Thanks for your thoughts. Hmmm. I think it's time to watch MR. HOLLAND'S OPUS again. Best-! D.A.
