German short row technique that does not require a wrap at the turn. Replicates the Japanese short row technique without safety pins.
Part I describes how to work short rows when turning and on a purl row.
Part II describes how to work short rows when turning on a knit row.

Thank you for finally putting a name to this technique, and doing such a nice clear video. I've been using this same technique for about 2 years now, learned it from Ruth Kindla's book, and hadn't seen it anywhere else. I'm glad it's finally coming to youtube. I love shortrows because of this technique!

The "real" name of this technique is "double stitch short rows," which is what I suspect "dubbel maska" means. I just didn't know that name when I first discovered them. I had only seen the technique used or described in translated German patterns and books, where they just called them short rows. I called them "German short rows" both because of the resources I'd found them in, and because they produce the same result as Japanese short rows. Seemed like an appropriate name for them!

Thank you for sharing them.

Short rows are a vertical shaping technique that allow you to had more length across some of the sts on the needles, just like increases and decreases allow you to add/reduce the width of a fabric. I have a playlist of videos on short rows, which might help you understand some of their uses. kzfaq.info/sun/PL1AZxTfSCe2cN-DX80Al56SnjN4Um1Uvr

if you are doing this short row (called German Short rows) if your pattern stats knit 5 w&t you need to really knit 6 (knit the one you would wrap and turn) and then do the pullover.

The best place to get help with knitting questions on the internet is Ravelry.com. Ask your question in the Techniques forum, or go to my Rox Rocks group and ask the question there, if you want me to see it. Ravelry even has a group of knitters from Malaysia. You might be able to meet other knitters who live near you!

I didn't read all the comments, so maybe this question has been addressed. It has been my understanding that when changing from W&T to GSR you knit (or purl) the stitch that would have been wrapped. So if you knit to 5 stitches before the end in W&T, you knit to 4 stitches before the end and turn and pull up on that last knit stitch.
@RoxanneRichardson

There are some people who work their short rows so that the double stitch is in the spot where the wrap would be. My preference is to maintain the location of the turn. You could argue either way (and people do), but my reasoning comes from a design perspective. If you design the shaping with the turns in a particular location, the technique you apply to the turn to avoid a hole and to avoid the selvedge stitch bump will place the "flag" that signals the previous turn (the wrap or the double stitch) in different locations. (It's like marking the location of a river by placing a flag on one riverbank vs the other. The river doesn't change location, but the flags do.) You might be interested in my other videos on GSRs, including the one that compares various short row methods, and the one on substitutions. kzfaq.info/sun/PL1AZxTfSCe2cN-DX80Al56SnjN4Um1Uvr

Thank you. It was presented to me as gospel handed down on Mt. Sinai. As a very sheepish knitter, I saw no reason to question.
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 6 жыл бұрын
Again, lots of people do it that way. In many cases, it won't make a big difference, but I like to have a *reason* for picking one method over another, rather than following a rule of thumb blindly. Short rows can seem very mysterious (I think it took me four years to really "get" them), so from the perspective of a knitter following a pattern and wanting to make a substitution, it may feel like what is important is the flag signaling the turn, and not the turn, itself.

Those are my vintage Aero needles. You can't get them in the U.S. anymore, you have to order them from Canada, but I don't find the coating they use now to be as good as the old ones. I bought a used set of Aero/Bernat vintage needles a few years back on eBay to fill out my collection.

Roxanne Richardson, I have a couple of these vintage Aero needles, one in a size 3 single point, and the other in a size 9 circular (don't remember the length). I love them and googled them online. I did find them but don't know if they have the same coating, like you mentioned. You mentioned somewhere in these comments the yarn you were using in this video has been discontinued, but can you tell me who makes it and what yarn might be similar in quality and weight?

Continue.... One of my friend ask me to knit for her 4 yrs old children. At first I got stuck with the size because 'west' and 'asian' people are really in different size. But yet, I managed to solve that. My only problem is I never knit long sleeve, so I keep on revealing my yarn as the sleeve didn't works. I need your expertise to teach me how. The armhole measure (flat) is 8 (inch). And the length of sleeve is 18" until cuff. Can you help me with this? Thanks.

So sayang.... (sayang in direct translation means love but its been used to say means more or less "oo... what a waste") I really love the yarn.. so colourful and cheerful... I learned knitting all by myself with help of internet. In Malaysia, knitting with 2 needles are not popular. And all my friends didn't even know wat knitting is. So I really have problem when I stucked with something about knitting. Nobody to ask. Now, I already can knit, sleeveless vest.

Sorry! I don't know what else to tell you. I know how frustrating it is to have that problem with a video, but I don't know what causes the issue when it happens and it's clear the problem isn't with the video itself. The only other suggestions I could offer are to try a different browser, or re-boot. I occasionally have video-caused lockups on my computer, which seem to be the result of conflicts between various players.

I have a question hopefully someone can help me with. This is my first time doing yarn over as well as working in short rows. My question is about the short rows in this pattern I'm using for a slouch hat. It says "On each row knit two fewer stitches than you did on the previous row (so 2 will have 66 stitches, Row 3 will have 64 etc.) Now does this mean on Row 2 I yarn over then turn my work leaving 4 stitches on my left needle and then on Row 3 I yarn over and turn my work when there are 6 stitches left on my needle? Or do I leave two stitches at the end of each row I knit and it automatically adds up on its own. Does my question make sense? I will include a link to the pattern as well if that helps. crafts.creativebug.com/knit-slouchy-hat-straight-needles-1573.html ps. I just LOVE the creativebug.com website and recommend it to everyone!!

The shortrow technique used in your pattern is a yarnover shortrow, which is different than the technique shown in the above video. In your case, once you have stopped 2 sts short of each end, you can use the YOs as a signal to stop 2 sts prior to the previous YO before turning. In general, the best way to get help on a specific pattern is to contact the designer. Alternatively, you could post a question on Ravelry.

Like many knitters, I often use "knit" in the generic sense, as in "work" the stitches however they need to be worked to maintain the pattern. Not a lot I can do about correcting it 11 years later! :-)

I am sure this German Short Rows technique is good. However the Lady in the Video didn't pause for a minute. She kept going and talking and talking.. So this isn't going to be help. I realize I can pause but the speed of her narrating the video doesn't help a beginner with trying to do Short Rows. Thank you.
