This video demonstrates how to create a YO (yarnover) on an empty needle (i.e. first stitch on needle). Demonstrated in Continental style (yarn in left hand) and English style (yarn in right hand)

You made the YO look so easy. Years ago..before KZfaq I had a pattern that I wanted to make but couldn't figure out how to start off with a yarn over. Thank you for showing this!.

Thank you for your absolutely great videos, Roxanne. Brioche stitch set up round also requires an initial YO if you have an even number of stitches (from Barbara Walker's Treasury of Knitting Patterns). I always found that a little tricky to start the first row with a YO, but somehow I did make it work (other patterns just say to use an odd number of sts).

This is also a good lesson in how not to get UNintentional YOs at the needle transition on dpns! :)

The yarn over lesson is interesting. And I use something similar when I knit on the bias (adding to one side while decreasing the other side) to get a better texture out of a cheaper yarn. I try to use a pattern or a yarn that will not scream out my mistakes. I yarn over and am confused about how to wrap for a yarn over because I knit right-handed and left handed sometimes instead of purlling, but rarely with a pattern or a yarn that will let this show up as an error and j am often using a yarn and a stutch patttern that will work if you do gain or lose less than 5 stitches per row. I am ambutiois and I want to be more precise with my knitting and I ordered some nice linen which is going to show off stitches just as extremely as the mohair I last used hid my stitches.

What would you do if you need a YO, working flat and in a new color? Thank you for these videos

In that case, I would tie the tail of the new color to the tail of the old color with a temporary knot, in order to provide some tension on the new yarn. I could then do the YO, and later (when it was time to weave in the ends) I could undo the knot.

This was great. Can I use Y) in L R stitch separated by 2 K stitches in a raglan sweater . Will it Go R and Left as needed as you Increase the stitches. Thank You.
