One tip I picked up from another tutorial--when you add your water to make your gradation, start in the lightest part of the color and work your way to the darker/heavier pigminted area then work back smoothing out any blobs. It helped me get smoother gradations.

I save the ink bits after sharpening the Inktense pencils, I also do the same with watercolour pencils as they are both more pigmented than the pan paints I have and offer more colour choice.

I have a FC AD watercolor pencil set, it seems that it is easier to use than regular WC paint, but in practice it is not. What I found terribly convenient was that when using the tip of the pencil as pigment donor directly onto the water brush. In that case it works exactly as regular WC paint.

On occasion I will use my watercolor pencils for sketching prior to using watercolor paint to finish the picture. One can use blues for outlining the sky or clouds, greens for tree or grass leaves, red for bricks or rocks, etc. The pencil will dissolve and become part of the paint. In this way one does not see a ‘pencil’ underneath the paint.

I do this quite often. Also use a watercolor pencil to increase the strength of a pan paint of the same, or nearly the same, color. Very useful.

If you get some rough textured plastic, you can scribble on this and mix the colours before applying to the sketch. Caran d'ache make a board especially for this, it's called the Palette Aquarelle.

Doors are interesting subjects, and tell a different story to every viewer. What is behind that closed door? I'm still catching up with your videos. And, love your play with other products than watercolour because you save us viewers who don't have deep pockets. I've been experimenting with using Albecht Durer watercolour pencils as a general outline sketch (lightly sketched), and I'm finding that I get softer lines than I get using a graphite pencil. They melt into the painting so no linework is obvious. Great way to get the big shapes in. I haven't tried that with Inktense yet though, because they are super vibrant. They're like Phthalo watercolours so just a tad goes miles. Interesting video. Came out beautiful even though you are new to Inktense. I've experimented more, and find less is more with these pencils. I like to take a little lick from the pencil tip with the tip of a wet brush, or mix on a Caran d'ache palette (has a coarse side and a smooth side). I clean the caran d'ache palette immediately after use with a Magic Eraser sponge which works for me... left overnight it stains. Just my tip for your viewers. So I have one Caran d'ache palette for watercolour pencil mixing, that doesn't stain, and one for the staining Inktense if the palette isn't cleaned after use. It seemed like an idiotic expense initially, but now I'm super happy. Lightweight and small enough to take Urban Sketching too. Win! I'm feeling more inspired to use my Inktense pencils even more. And experiment. Thanks ❤️

Yes, I love those. The natural colors are much nicer for outdoor sketching/painting as a watercolor type pencil. I love them. I have the 24 set if the Inktense and the smaller set (12?) of the graphitint pencils. I also have watercolor pencils and some Cretacolor pencils that came in a cool little urban sketching kit and it had a TON of really interesting materials that (aside from the sketchbook) had a plenty of stuff to hold you over and create beautiful art. I think I need help. I absolutely love all the cool materials these companies are coming out with. I want to try them all.

Congratulations on getting married next year! Second, thanks for this review... I have a few of these pencils and I really love them. My favorite part about the Derwent inkense pencils is that they do leave a little bit of a texture behind and that it's difficult to completely dissolve the entire pencil. I think that's actually a feature, not a flaw. It generates some visual interest in a way like granulation would in a watercolor paint.

Just a note about the inktense pencils .. they are not actually water color but ink .. here is a copy paste from google: " Inktense (a portmanteau of the words “ink” and “intense”) is basically ink in the form of pencils. They are not to be confused with watercolor pencils for two reasons. While they are initially water-soluble, they are ink and do not reactivate with water once they are dry, making them permanent."

Great work. Doors and windows are a great way to practice sketching, there are so many variations you never get bored of the subject. I also use pinterest to find these sort of references, it is a great resource. I love the Inktense brand. I was lucky enough to have a full set of the Inktense blocks bought for me as a birthday present 3 years ago....they soon replaced my watercolours as my go to. I recently received this set of pencils as a gift and have been using them in my art journal this month...you can't beat them for intensity of colour and because they are ink and permanent, they resist spills and smudging so are great for outdoor work.

It was lovely and inspiring watching you. I have a selection of these pencils. I guess they are my favorite pencils ( love how they feel on the paper) but sadly I don't use them enough. My kids use them more then I do. How do you get inspired to actually create instead of hoarding art materials and fearing the blank page? Actually another fear of mine is "what am I doing here creating art that doesn't sell?"

Yes, I can understand this statement: Actually another fear of mine is "what am I doing here creating art that doesn't sell?" -- for a while I felt my only purpose to make art was to sell it as a print in my shop - it's a horrible pressure... trying to break out and just making art for fun is really important. Now I find myself in the thoughts: "I need to make art for my KZfaq channel" - a vicious cycle! But that's why travel sketching and urban sketching is so freeing....just going out to record what you see with not pressure to display or sell it....

You are going to love Valletta in Malta 😊😊 I have a list of recommended supplies here - urbansketchingworld.com/recommended-stuff I had been thinking about doing a video on minimalist travel sketching kit…! Right here right now I would say 1 x mechanical pencil (with spare refill), 1 large round brush (#10 should be perfect for an a5 size sketchbook) and I personally think a small dagger brush for little details. A small set of watercolours, 12 should be the max you really need, a collapsible water cup, some clips to hold your book open and a cloth to wipe your brush on… and then for ink… I’d take a 0.1 a 0.3 and 0.5 fine liner - I didn’t say fountain pen because I’m not sure I’d want to travel around with a bottle of ink in my backpack (long term). Oh and a5 sized sketchbook is perfect I reckon. Hope that helps!!

@@tarias_sketchy_adventures We usually fly into Milano and I know a few art stores there so I can grab some things I don't want to carry on the flight... mostly the paper. For your watercolors... do you use dry pads or tubes? I assume dry for travel because flights don't like fluids. Thanks for the heads up... Id LOVE a minimalist travel sketching kit vid! Make a note to allow for bread, cheese and wine in carry case haha (Hey, it's Italy so one must follow the 'rules'!)

@@tarias_sketchy_adventures Also, I LOVE pubs of london in your book. Nice color and a playful bit of warping(non perfect perspective cuz I don't know what to call it). Of course I love the doors... I often wonder who passed through these old doors... what secrets they keep...

If you had a Inktense crayons (oooooh yeah) you would have been able to put dainty washes in behind the stones for example. I leave mine in the tin and use them like a pan palette. Not huge to carry with you. Tempting?

I love your art! And I also love intense. My initial thought is that drawing the form with the derwent would be way too sloppy, but then again, maybe It would be flowy and ethereal. I think I’ll try it and let you know

How are the watercolor brushes after using the Inktense pencils? Do they clean up thoroughly? Because once the ink dries on the paper, it's permanent. I'd be concerned using an expensive brush.

I'm not too sure what the best are - this is personal taste - but the best I have tried in my personal opinion are the Faber Castell Albrecht Drurer watercolour pencils....I think they are expensive everywhere though....

Hello - yes you’re right. I didn’t realise the difference at the time but I do now. However, they are pencils activated by water so I hope the demo is still relevant! I really enjoy these pencils too 😊 thanks for your comment

Inktense pencils are wonderful but the pigment is ink, not watercolor. It behaves quite differently in many respects.

watercolour pencils make no sense to me, you basically do double the work for the same effect
@barefacedquestions
@barefacedquestions Жыл бұрын
The beginning stage of a watercolor pencil piece don't require as much thought and care as watercolor painting does, nor do you have to fill in every valley of the water because you're going to use brush to move the pigment around. So I'd say it comprises of 70% colored pencil work and 60% of watercolor painting. It's not double the work, plus it allows for more control, and I ended up with a less messy working surface. So it's worth it for me.

Hi Renuka. Thanks for your comment. I understand. This was one of my earlier videos, I’m still figuring out the best way to present so sorry if that frustrated you. I think a lot of people like the feeling it’s more hanging out with a friend rather than a teacher, but I take your point. I think there are ways an means to provide feedback and your comment seems a bit rude... just my feedback to you. Remember there are human beings behind everything made on the internet. This is free content made with love to encourage and inspire people to sketch. That’s all. Many thanks, Taria 🙏

@@NelaDunato You know what, you all are right. I usually don't leave negative reviews, but I suppose I was just fed up of watching endless videos expecting to learn something straight away, and then being disappointed. As you say, it's not too bad for free stuff. So - sorry, won't dot it again, will just click away if bored. As we all should.
