I used to watch HeeHaw, a crazy country music and humor show on TV when I was a kid. Even as a child the humor was super cheesy to me but the musical talent was almost always awesome. Roy Clark and Buck Owens hosted it and they also had some really great banjo players. I remember seeing over a dozen banjo players jamming in one scene.

@@scorpionf1504 of course I have. I grew up with Roy Clark’s music and watched the actual broadcast of the Johnny Cash show when Roy Clark was on it. Maybe I should have said Roy Clark is to string plucking what Hendrix was to the Fender Stratocaster. FYI: I was a teenager in the late 60’s.

It's so, so, so cool and rewarding to see Roy Clark appreciated by someone who recognizes what he's doing in the larger context of music. He definitely made himself a household name on HeeHaw, as a few of the commentators have mentioned. The average HeeHaw viewer, as you can imagine, grew up on a steady diet of old-school country music, but didn't necessarily understand that a few of the Nashville legends who played for the show (Roy being one, Chet Atkins being another) became famous as country stars but were in fact unbelievably talented across a huge range of music. They could play basically anything, and their association with "cowboy acts" right down to this day conceals just how versatile and well-informed they were across a huge variety of musical genres. It's so great that people are looking back on Roy now and starting to see him as part of the much more musically diverse world he inhabited all along.

SO many different variations of playing were involved in this one piece. Basic strumming (although fast), plucking, slapping, counter-fingering chords, slide style. It is amazing to hear, but extremely complicated to play. Which is why so many people who understand guitar playing are amazed at how simple Roy Clarke makes it look and sound.

Can watch him on "Hee Haw" show. In the 50',60's &70's Roy was everywhere on tv. You can find him having fun playing with Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Glen Campbell, Jim Stafford & anyone else that was a talented musician. On "Hew Haw" his family would play with him. Father, Uncles, brothers, cousins. They all played instruments. He also had a jam sessions with the cast members...Buck Trent, Grandpa Jones, Jimmy Henley, Roni Stoneman, Buck Owens, Charlie McCoy & many more. And I'm just naming the Country artist.

I grew up in the 70s and 80s and remember watching Roy Clark on the tv show HeeHaw when my parents had it on and really never considered country artists interesting and therefore unskilled. As an adult later in life I re-discovered Roy Clark (and country music) and regret how ignorant I was at the time having missed out on many years of good music and appreciation of his artistry. The interesting thing is they practiced this scene multiple times and each time Roy Clark played a DIFFERENT song. The reactions of Tony Curtis and Jack Klugman were completely genuine. Curtis is an ardent classical music follower to the point where he has actually conducted symphony orchestras. Because they didn't know what Roy would play, or the reaction, the camera angles were not set up for Tony Curtis's reaction.

My dad seen Roy Clark in concert when he was a boy. He said it was the greatest guitar performance he'd ever seen, and he's seen Stevie Ray Vaughn, which btw he took me to see when I was a boy. I didn't understand how the guy from Hee-Haw could be so special. Well, as Roy Clark inspired my dad to want to be a guitarist, Stevie Ray (and my dad) inspired me to be one too. It said he was 19 when he made it. It had about 14 songs on it and they were all great. It had Malagueña on it too. The thing is, I don't remember what the name of the album was and I don't know what happened to it. Now I can't find it. I have tried for years (on and off) to track it down, but no luck.
