Must have watched this 100 times. What I love about Roy and his solos are the melodies and the phrasing. Dude just making up amazing licks on the fly, giving notes space to breathe, not just climbing up and down scales and modes. Was fortunate enough to see him in London before he passed. You are sorely missed. RIP

He’s a lot like miles Davis in this sense!! Like don’t get me wrong people like Arturo Sandoval and Freddie Hubbard are great! But sometimes playing as many notes as possible in phrases gets uninteresting. But that’s just my preferred way of improv. Is the perfect balance of space and notes.

Roy Hargrove used to come to Chicago on Thanksgiving weekend every year (2006-2008 roughly), in 2009 he came on New Year's weekend. I saw him at the Jazz Showcase the night after NYE, and they played an amazing set. They got an enthusiastic standing ovation that didn't stop. When they took the bandstand again for the encore, "Soulful" is what they played and it was simply the best thing I've ever heard. He dedicated it to Chicago..."...this is what I think of you, Chicago...Soulful."
