He's known as one of the top trumpet players in jazz for the past quarter-century, and returned to the KNKX studios with a fantastic new song for the city Roy says has always inspired him.
"The Seattle Vibe" was so new, his quintet hadn't heard it until they arrived in town for their stay at Jazz Alley. There wasn't much time to chat with the band before our live broadcast, Roy was guiding them through the soulful changes and groovy tempo of his latest song.
If you don't catch Hargrove in live performance, you'll have trouble hearing his music these days. He hasn't made an album since the 2009 big band album Emergence. Recording albums don't make financial sense, he says, making this exclusive studio session a special occasion.
Roy Hargrove - trumpet
Justin Robinson - alto sax
Tadataka Unno - piano
Ameen Saleem - bass
Quincy Phillips - drums

I remember watching Roy on Jay Leno's show when he was probably somewhere between the age of 18-20 I guess. Nevertheless I was about 17 and I remember thinking "man this Kat's got it! I was extremely jealous and motivated to go practice my ass off! I've watched him ever since and the only other icon that saddened me as much as Roy's passing was Michael Jackson's death. I will miss Mr. Hargrove and I will ALWAYS play his music while he's playing in God's orchestra! RIP Roy!

I saw that episode as well when I was about 12 and I promptly went out and bought the cassette! It was first introduction to jazz, and what a great artist to make that introduction.

I remember seeing Roy live at the Newport Jazz Festival in 2001, the first of five or six Rhode Island vacations since then. This man is missed tremendously. So many of the greats have left this world, and jazz is not the same without them. I also remember seeing Wayne Shorter there that same year. We went back to Newport this year, for the first time since 2008, and I was mostly disappointed with the performances... particularly the non-jazz performances, which were not suitable for what used to be a family oriented event. Never thought I'd hear so many F-bombs at the Newport Jazz Festival. I'm not a prude, but there's a time and place for everything. Anyway, seeing the classy Roy Hargrove do his thing here just makes me miss him and others that much more. RIP Roy. RIP Wayne. Thanks for the cherished memories.

It disgusts me how they book so little actual jazz at these “jazz” festivals. And I say this as someone who also loves hip hop and many other genres. I’m a Wu Tang die hard but I don’t want to see/hear them at a jazz festival. I’m there for James Carter, Esperanza Spaulding, or Eddie Henderson. I’ll go to a hip hop festival to see a hip hop show. I don’t see Wynton being booked for the Rock The Bells festival! This Newport Jazz Fest was awful. Robert Glasper playing keys behind a bunch of f bombs and n words being spat out into the ears of hundreds.

I’ve never been to the Newport Jazz Festival, but it’s disappointing to hear that it’s degraded like this, dang!! Yes, when I see jazz advertised, that’s what I expect. Years ago, I went to my college reunion- I traveled back to my hometown Memphis to attend the weekend-long festivities. The agenda for early Sunday afternoon was listed on the event schedule as a jazz brunch. I arrived and heard classical music being played by a small group of musicians. I thought “maybe this is the opening act”. But they kept playing. Now, I’m a classically trained pianist, so I have nothing against classical music, but- like you said- if it says jazz… I saw the coordinator and asked her when does the jazz start. She looked puzzled. I reminded her the schedule says “jazz brunch”. She waved her hand dismissively and said something like “jazz… classical…”. And threw her hands up. I was incensed 😡- the brunch was a totally different, and less pleasant vibe than I’d anticipated due to the classical music being played. And, it was at a locally well known college. So there was no excuse for the coordinator to be so flippant about it. I made sure to write that in my review- don’t falsely advertise the music genre!
