I remember Man united struggled in the first half of 2011-12 season because of Scholes's 1st retirement. Then how he transformed the team in the 2nd half of that season (nearly win the league) and of course win the 2012-13 PL when United sign another deadly striker (Van Persie). Just miss how he pinged the ball from 25m - 30m to wingers like Cr7, Nani, Valencia to run, it was so smooth and so easy.
@ozieikram2511
@ozieikram2511 6 ай бұрын
Yeah that’s it. He gave our wingers so many one on ones by the way he would be playing short passes in the midfield linking up play and then suddenly ping, knocks a ball out to a winger who can then have a go at the full back one v one.
@vs6300
@vs6300 6 ай бұрын
@@ozieikram2511 Stats dont back that. Scholes averaged 4-5 crosses per game, meaning long crosses essentially wasnt the major part of his games, plus his accuracy was a meagre 85% placing 5th most accurate crosser. Scholes contribution to the team was mostly the link up play between players around him, retaining possession and control, and dictating the tempo except when he was played further upfront especially earlier in his career. His technique at the CM/CDM was second to none in the epl, 93-96% pass accuracy even clocking 💯 in some games. Scholes isnt what the media wants to portray.

Scholesy was the complete cm\attacking midfielder. Intellgent distribution of the ball, impervious to a hard press, pinpoint defense breaking passes, control of the tempo, calm under pressure, lethal from range and the heart of a freaking lion. People forget that he would get stuck in and fight for the team, just like Keano. Maybe even learned from Keano. If one of the lads got hit, Scholesy would have a clattering reply. If we went down a goal, Scholesy would continue working away unfazed, if not spurred on to attack. We had a real character in Scholesy and they're in really limited supply now.

That is the topic of this conversation, which I personally think is nonsense cause for me there is no such thing as a complete midfielder/striker/defender/GK. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. Great players are able to compensate their weaknesses in other aspects of their game.

@@aabidamn they were complete players according to dynamics and versatility like Gullit, Cruyff, and Beckenbauer. complete means a player that can contribute offensively and defensively on a great measure. They give coaches more dynamics in applying various strategies. In modern football, these type of players are usually box-to-box with great techniques. Right now we have Bellingham and Goretzka. Joelinton maybe can get his name on this list but it is still to early to tell. Goretzka and Bellingham are no way near to the 3 names that I mentioned earlier but they are the closest to standard right now. Also complete player is not always the best player. there is perfect and there is also masterclass. In most occasions, masterclass always outdone perfect. If you are talking about perfect according to physical ability, we have Ronaldo, Adriano, Rivaldo and Ibra that ticked all boxes specifically during their early prime days. Wherever he was on the pitch - Scholes knew instinctively what to do, where his teammates where and how to play the killer ball. The guy just 'knew' - it was like he could see the game from above. There aren't many Englishmen who could walk into any team, Scholes is one of them.

Very underestimated player. As a German, I remember that he was around forever being a permanent nuisance in international matches (even in the times when we still knew how to play football). Further, he is an ispiration for the smaller guys among us (which I am one of) proving that it is not about being 6 foot plus or pumping iron in football. I would not even say he was unathletic. He was fast enough for the job, had a terrific shot, did fierce tacklings and I am sure that (getting home from the pub) also did some execise. He was just not the tallest guy on the pitch. But so what?

My two favourite players are Cantona and Scholes, watched them both Live growing up, as personalities they were completely different. Cantona was everything I wasn't foreign, poetic, arrogant (or so it seemed) and I idolized him, as I got older Scholes was like me, Mancunian, from a council estate, shit hairline, droll, scruffy etc. but fucking hell I don't think people who didnt watch him live week in week out appreciate just how good he was. There's highlight reels of course but watching him being the smallest guy on the pitch and absolutely boss a game with his brain and his passing was something else. Press him he'll one two it up the pitch, don't press him he's bombing howitzers 50 yards to wingers or full backs, his ability to do that and put the pass on the players stronger foot for him to run into space goes unappreciated, not to mention his heading. I waffle on any chance I get about him. He's from where I'm from, he could do everything (the tackle thing is a myth, tactical bookings and revenge) and lads of my age lived vicariously through him. A genius footballer and a real working class hero, would never talk himself up or brag, constantly says he wasn't that good and hates being complimented. As pep said 'I love it'

Oh it was absolute pleasure to watch this guy play, Sir Alex built the team around him and rightly so, when he received the ball, even if there is no one in the wings wide and ahead to receive the ball, he would play a one touch with others and the wings knew they had to spread out and 99/100 he would reach them, that happened everytime he played no matter the opposition.. It was magnificent just to watch this man tick, absolute genius; he knew how to keep the markers at a distance or draw them when needed, he knew where the spaces are or how to create spaces, top notch skills and more importantly excellent vision.. A coach's favourite dream.. Cant figure out how England coaches were oblivious of this.. England would have won more trophies had they utilised this man properly..

How the f*ck is he "underrated"...? Any footy fan who knows the sport, rates Scholes as one of the best midfielders this country has ever produced. Even here on Merseyside. He was practically an ever-present in arguably the best man utd side ever. He played for his country about 60-70 times. He received various individual awards, from a wide range of sources & and he's been induced into the English Football Hall of Fame & the Premier League Hall of Fame. How was he "underrated".....????

When youve got the list of admirers he has and yet the average fan looks elsewhere you have to question if theyve ever watched a game of football. It's such a regret that golden generation of players didn't have a great manager to lead them and the blame lies squarely with the FA. Playing Scholes out left in a 442, whilst 4 of the best midfielders in the world got beaten by an extra man everytime against top opposition. It was like asking our team to play with 10 men against the top teams. The manager should have had the balls to drop Lampard and played a holding player in his place. That team should have been built around Scholes & Gerrard.

@@abraham8178 i was comparing them as functional equivalents. Of course they are technically very different. Lampard is the epitome of english box to box midfielder (he scored almost the same goals as Suarez did) but later in his carreer he was also very good as deep lying playmaker. Gerrard was also very different from Alonso, he was an all around midfielder who could as deep lying playmaker as he did with Hodgson's England, as a classic 8, or even as a 10. Carrick and Busquets were very similar, indeed I would dare that Carrick(and also De Rossi) pioneered the Busquets approach to the role before the Spaniard. And Scholes was similar to Xavi but could also play as a 10

@@miguelporras8366 They were so obsessed with Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard that they forgot other midfielders existed. Both Stevie and Frankie are CM.. but they do not have defensive instincts. Spain could made the same mistakes if they were so obsessed with Xavi & Iniesta. But they were clever and prioritised team system than big names. They let Busquets play CDM and Alonso and Xavi as CM. Iniesta on the left side. Back in 2006-07 it was very clear that Carrick and Scholes were very good at positioning. Very formidable and Intelligent. They were able to keep up with Makelele-Ballack-Lampard, Viera-Fabregas, Gerard-Alonso. Dominating them most of the times.. Surely if England had approached midfield the same way Spain did they surely could’ve won a World and a Euro. Because both Stevie and Frankie played like they did in their respective Clubs in a 4-4-2 formation and the team always got caught in counters. Carrick and Scholes could’ve brought Stability in the team. It should’ve been 4-3-2-1 Neville-Ferdinand-Terry-Cole Carrick-Scholes-Lampard Beckham-Gerard Wayne Rooney as lone striker..
