Part 9: in 2005 Liam Galvin & Yvette Rowland spent the day filming True Crime & Unlicensed Boxing Legend Roy Shaw at his home in Essex for the dvd 'Roy Shaw - Brute Force'. Much of the unedited footage was not used on the dvd. In this ninth part Roy talks about pub fights, attacking Nonces, Jack 'The Hat' McVitie, Frank 'The Axeman' Mitchell & Ronnie Kray! He also talks about how he got off a murder charge! A brutal look at a violent life!

I knew someone who used to go out with him to 195 in Epping , he told me he was at Faces nightclub and someone threw an ashtray at Roy and Roy turned round and said I`m having a conversation carried on talking he big mark on his face and he said he found out who the geezer was he said he served him up good and proper with bud bottle outside, he was about 69 then. He also said at his nans funeral he was doing press ups with him on his back and also he was waiting at the bar and he bit a chunk out a glass party trick.

What makes Roy a national treasure is that as kids we had these fellas to look up too, better to look up to a gentleman who could smash your face in than to look up too people that stab or shoot you….. when you have a fight, win or lose, there is a a respect that is earned, most people who fight become good friends with one time enemies that had a scrap with. We didn’t kick people when they were down, if they get back up you blast them again, this goes on until one of you says I’ve had enough….. Buy a respect was earned, people never once tried it again, once they know you can fight you don’t get bullied again, every street has its bully, it’s about being tough and never giving up, even when you lose, that bully won’t want to try again because he knows you’ll keep getting up and coming back so they learn to respect you and stay away regardless of if you won or not

Well, you are clearly wrong because Roy said the guy who he was with tried to kick the guy when he was out cold, so they did kick people when they were down and how is jumping in on a fight showing respect? some people just want to see what they want to see and that often has nothing to do with reality.

I'm still stunned at the number of people that idolise this man and believe all the tall tales he spouts. Yes, he could have it on the cobbles without question, yes, he was a hard man but if you believe everything this guy says without any doubts whatsoever you need to check yourself. People get brainwashed by all these types of videos and they talk about this man like they knew him or have ever seen him fight. Lol. I don't subscribe to most of it. The real hard men are the understated, polite, gentlemanly types who you probably haven't heard of because they don't go around telling tall tales and shouting about how hard they are. Guys that are hard to get on record and there isn't much out there about them to watch. Guys like Billy Grimshaw, Eric Mason and Albert Redding.

Actually Roy is 1 of the few that could admit when he was bettered. He said Cliff Fields was the real guvnor and that if Ron Stander didn't break his ribs before their fight he'd have "mullered" him. Ordinary blokes in a street fight stood no chance with a bloke like him.
