I'm always a bit floored when I hear Roy Wood Jr. in an interview. On stage his personality is so big, in interviews he is so much more soft spoken. It really makes me respect the energy he puts forth on stage.

Roy Wood Jr. is going to impress whatever audience he’s given. His skill of appealing to the type of work he’s doing, the platform itself (I mean plz read his twitter threads lol), and more importantly who is there to witness it, is quite incredible! Here, on top of winning all of us over…he’s winning Conan over too.

Maybe they all tried to copy John Stewart. He got sucess while having the Bush on Office...as others later did when Trump was there (or maybe the Trump TDS just delayed the inevitable). Roy Wood Jr. is right, even more so with the writers and SAG strike - I've been missing my late night commentary regarding current events and politics. He makes a great point about anyone reporting the news today and I've encountered many influencers who are posting inaccurate info, not knowing historical facts AND just opinion, and when I've questioned their sources or opinion, some get really defensive, rather than providing supportive facts. He's right about the people questioning everything these days, bc mis-information, AI and opinion does not replace factual news.

It is an interesting question, but the news outlets did this to themselves. In chasing the lowest possible common denominator, and ceding the investigative aspect of journalism to endless "editorializations", they made journalism into something anyone with an opinion could do. Maybe with time, the vast majority will tire of the nonsense and crave real journalism again... but I suspect we will have to go through an even nastier period than we've already been through before we get to that point. The true legacy of Fox News wont just be Trump and the breakdown of politics, but the breakdown of the entire media landscape as well. And everyone will be too late to react to it. 🤷

I was shocked by Trevor’s departure because he was seemingly on fire. All you people who say the show hasn’t been good in years blah blah haven’t watched it in years, because I’m telling you that Trevor Noah’s final year on TDS was as good as the show has ever been, including when Jon Stewart was at his best. Search out videos of the show from 2022. It was so good. But it’s now evident that wasn’t just because of Noah, because the fact that the quality stayed at such a high level throughout all the different guest hosts is a tribute to its writing and production team, which is as good as anything on television. But I do sense two phenomena about the timing of his departure, which he shared with James Corden, another foreigner on US TV. I think, because they weren’t American, they could see something coming that the rest of us were blind to - maybe not the strike specifically, but they knew that everything was about to change and not for the better, and they both got out on top without having to see their shows diminished and become less relevant. But there’s another aspect to this as well. Remember the prime ministers of New Zealand and Finland also resigned, who were around the same age as Noah and Corden. What they all shared was a sense that they got to do a job they wanted, did it well for a decent amount of time, and then decided to go on to other things, even if that meant they would never again have that level of power and influence and money. It’s as if there’s a word in the vocabulary of millennials that’s missing from that of the boomers: enough. Trevor had that job for enough time. He reached his peak; he achieved mastery; why continue until he wasn’t as masterful any more?

We need to care deeply about WHERE & HOW we consume news. ‘ Tim” Roy’s example- is not a newscaster, even if he has a nice camera with a good lens. All these people, particularly young people who purport themselves to be ‘ influencers” were probably 15-years old, 5 years ago-; so I don’t put too much stock in the little videos that KZfaq allows them to distribute. Sure, it’s better than working at a fast food restaurant, but we definitely need to vett where alleged news comes from. Does the producers of certain ‘news’ have a financial/ narrow personal interest in seeing the ‘rise of the falsehoods’?

I find Roy's observations frustrating. The 'modern' news consumption still works for TDS because the only solution to some of the ridiculous nature of journalism today is to consume in aggregate and observe what doesn't hold water which is the same as it ever was (e.g. before twitter). The act of aggregating this news and producing entertaining content still works. Also, I wish there was lessons learned by why TDS has always found an audience: it was never 'late night' viewing. Sure comedy central premiered an episode in the evening but it also rebroadcasted the next day, and was available as VOD. I think I have watched TDS a handful of times at premiere on TV, many hundreds of times on the next-day rebroadcast, and thousands of times via VOD. Compare that to how fundamentally unwatchable TV news is either live or in VOD format: 1 minute of maybe an actual news item and 14 minutes of completely horseshit opinion and speculation among nobodies and hangers-on without talking to anyone of interest. Collecting all those 1 minute news items from all over the place and finding the joke is not some mysterious mountain to climb and still is a common grounding to build something for a wide audience.

TDS has been live commentary on the process of the news media making itself pointless. Now that the opinion of the actual "everyman on the street" is equal to or above that of the news anchors (they stopped being journalists decades ago), that process appears to mostly be complete. @@CrazyLocoInsane1 Literally his entire act. I don't get how people don't seem to notice the hypocrisy. He also loved to talk about rampant racism/oppression while he held more money and power than I (a white man) will ever have. Not saying racism doesn't exist, but it certainly didn't seem to be something he was dealing with.

How should late night change if the networks want to keep viewers? Easy. Stop parodying the news bc the news on both Fox and CNN has been a parody of itself for years..yawn. All of them - Colbert, Seth Meyers, John Oliver, Kimmel, Fallon told the same jokes, spoon fed by MSM, for years. I like Bill Burr, Louis CK, Chappelle bc they don't bend the knee. When MSM figures this out, don't hold your breath, and adjusts, they'll get their late night audience back - the ones who haven't left permanently, like me

How do you parody mtg? The same way you do Biden or Trump or AOC or Bernie.

Yeah. Way to belittle the joe blo at home making content. You aren't entitled to views just cos you're heavily scripted and have big flashy shows on traditional media. Tough.

It'd be really frustrating to sink huge amounts of effort and money into something, just to lose audience members to some guy reacting to (re: ripping off) some other guy's fail video. Some independent projects things are legitimate attempts at making real things. But a lot of em aren't.

@@redflamelcd In short, I think the problem is that the old stodgy organizations have the infrastructure and capital you need to make something high quality... but they don't seem to understand that consumers aren't interested in their stupid walled garden apps. It's like: "I want to watch the thing I wanted to see. Please sell me the thing I want to buy. If you've got some recommendations you want to sell me based on that, then fine. But I don't want to subscribe to a whole bunch of stuff I didn't ask for. " And you can get some on demand stuff, but it's always outrageously priced, costing more to watch a single movie than a Netflix or a Hulu would charge for their whole site... so you know there's shenanigans there. Louis CK has proven this point, I think. He sells his specials on his own site, gets all the money, and doesn't have a bunch of contracts and bullshit. But he can only pull that off because he has a pile of treasure all his own to make high quality stuff-- and he's nearly the only guy on the payroll, besides. Giant organizations have the money already. They just don't have the sense to be pro-consumer.

The Daily Show hasn't been funny or relevant in some time. It just comes off as Snarky, Government and State run Propaganda. John Stewart had something unique going on in the 2000's. Now, it's a joke and not even a funny one.

Jon was a singular figure. And I think Trevor was a pretty good choice as a guy to try and take over... but he wasn't strong enough to stand up to the insane wave of crazy that happened. And to be fair, I don't think Jon has been strong enough either on his new show. For my money, Bill Maher's the only guy doing this sort of thing right now that hasn't been compromised in some way by twitter warriors

@@claiminglight His "ideas" are literally just constantly criticizing young people for the sin of being young and constantly criticizing conservatives for just being conservatives. He doesnt appear to have any actual insights into anything. Im sure he makes alot of older richer liberals happy because he makes them feel comfortable also being out of touch. The guy has been that way from the start. Just whining to whine with no actual ideas.

I watched Stewart's DS every night. I gave Trevor a year and a half. Finally had to throw in the towel. He was unwatchable. Since I'm passed and over the DS, doesn't matter who. Roy Wood is not as good as klepper. And I love me some klepper. Neither are a good fit for host. It takes a je ne sais quos...but those 2 ain't it. If you want someone who is not even as funny as the 2nd funny person in the office, then Desi would be good. Hmmm. Who's worse. Trevor or Desi as host. Dammnnn. That's tough. They are both unwatchable in their own unique way
