Thank you Stu for the tips and advice here Stu. This video is just as relevant with the new stainless steel version of this silencer from Hitchcock's as this one, so very much appreciated. I also followed your advice regarding the heat shield and this item works very well with the Hitchcock's stainless downpipe upgrade too. Thanks again 🙂

This is so funny! I just installed this very pipe a week ago! The original pipe looked like a telephone pole... had to go. I had changed that out about a year ago for a Goldstar pipe. It looked pretty good but was really too loud for my taste...years ago I had installed the Hitchcocks pipe on my first RE 500 and remembered how much I liked it's looks. .. so I ordered it from Hitchcocks for my current RE 500c Hitchcocks service is incredible.. very very fast. The fitment went super quick and easy. Very happy with the look and sound of it.

Apparently you don't need that extra plate if you change the header pipe too.. Its what I'm doing to my C500. The standard header pipe is really restrictive on the inside.. So I've decided to change both the header pipe and fit the peashooter muffler (like yours), I've also bought the DNA air filter, but haven't fitted it until the pipe and muffler arrive in Oz.. Hitchcocks have run out of mufflers and are busy making more.. Since changing the muffler and air filter, have you noticed any change in the bike.. One of my mates who also rides a C500 reckons it feels nicer to ride, it feels less "clogged up" and gets better fuel economy.. Ill have to find out for myself.. One thing though, Im looking forward to a better sound.. The OEM muffler makes the bike sound like a big old water pump... Edit: I've changed the muffler and header pipe, replaced the standard rubbish air filter for a DNA filter (but it needed an extra bit of foam between the housing and the filter cover to seal properly), I changed the spark plug, added a resistor plug cap, rerouted the plug lead, and replaced both relays as the OEM ones from the factory were rubbish too.. The bike kept stalling while I was riding it.. It runs and sounds awesome now.. I don't use the muffler baffle - I love the exhaust note.. Oh and because the bike isnt restricted from all the catalytic converters in the pipe now, the bike doesn't struggle and rattle so much.. Most of the rattles have gone.. Only thing to sort out is the uncomfortable seat.. The front bolt is square which makes the seat springs do nothing. I'm going to change it for a round bolt and see if that makes a difference, maybe later replace the seat for a touring saddle..

It's great to see the new exhaust, hoping to hear it in the upcoming videos! I wasn't really sure if the Euro spec models did have the learning ecu but I'm glad to know they are! It was a real task for me to tune the carb right on my Euro 4 350 (Carb'ed) with a free flow megaphone and K&N, only restriction being the Cats in the headers. It used to pop and bang crazy and it ran pretty hot too!

A much revered ride in India, with great reason. I found they are very proud of their motorcycles including the 650 Interceptors, but in my mind the 500 is the real deal. Wonderful workhorse, great sound, torque and remarkably quick. When I have my fill of my newly acquired Triumph America , it’s the 500 Enfield for me here in Australia.

I'm looking at fitting one of these and have just noticed that Hitchcocks have switched to stainless steel for this item. They are also now supplying a cat delete down pipe and recommend the FuelX Lite module to help reduce engine temperature, improve running, life of the engine and help prevent heat staining to the stainless tail pipe. Tempting.....😊

That's a lot better, although you didn't mention the fact that you have just taken a huge weight off the bike too..... I fitted Hitchcocks Goldstar which also suits the style of this bike to a tee, again it has the baffles like yours, Hitchcocks have a video with an OEM versus the Goldstar on the dyno which shows an increase in BHP at the rear wheel, but would I notice on the road?, probably not, but the main thing is the loss of weight the better looks and for me a better sound without being too loud. Thanks again for another good video

I fitted mine after stage 1 of the running in period, so I don’t know what difference it made to performance. It’ll be interesting to hear your verdict on that. I have some heat discolouration appearing in a couple of places, and some mosaic style cracking in the chrome towards the front of the pipe. This is after roughly 1’700 miles. I wonder if this is common or if my Classic has got unusually hot at some point. Anyway, another good video. Nice to shed some weight and get that abomination off the bike 👍🏼

Mine has a Hitchcock's pea shooter. 2,600 miles, 1,600 with the new silencer. No discolouring of the chrome header. If you can, I'd check it's not running too lean. The spark plug should give you a good clue. If it looks a bit white and powdery, it's too lean and might need more regular oil changes / an aftermarket tuner.

@@martino4414 thanks. I’m changing oil frequently. I’ve fitted a booster plug, which has smoothed out the throttle response, and cured low rev surging. It is also supposed to richen the mixture, although the plug was a good colour.

One of the first things I did after running in the bike was replace the silencer. I initially went for a AWS shortbottle from India - which cost me about 100 euros including shipping. It had some performance improvement over the stock muffler, but it was loud and my fuel consumption went up a bit. ( I noticed it when having to recalibrate my fuel warning on my GPS - I like to have it remind me before the fuel light on the bike comes on) so now I could do about 200 km (124 miles) on a full tank. Fast forward about 9 months and a nasty winter season with on the road each day - I found that the short bottle shed its black coating for pig iron rust and twice I cleaned it up to apply UHT black paint to it and having to reinforce the mounting of the muffler - it looking like a reoccurring bit of maintenance to keep the silencer from rotting away. - so in spring this year I decided to browse Hitchcock's catalogue. Having a few email messages with the excellent customer service at Hitchcock's, I ordered their recommended silencer in matt black. After fitting it and taking the bike for a spin, there was a noticeable performance improvement - especially at mid range rpm (note I have a Powertronics piggy back ECU installed) - and a welcome reduction in vibration. so I was instantly a happy camper and considered it a good investment, especially noting the high quality of the part. But the next great thing showed itself after puttering around for a while - when the sat nave warned me that it was time to start looking for a petrol station - I found that the amount of fuel needed to fill the tank back up was about the price of a pint of Guinness in Dublin. So either the GPS calculated my mileage wrong - my fuel tank had shrunk , or I suddenly had much better fuel mileage on the bike. So I gently increased the range in the GPS to warn me after 140 miles - still I puttered around and faithfully provided fuel when the GPS told it was time (and still the low fuel light on the bike would not come on.) that would cost me around a shot of 12 year old single malt each time. I still had no real idea on how far the bike would take me before the fuel light would come on and last weekend I wade a trip from Dublin to county Wexford - in the middle of nowhere when the satnav again warned me it was time to find fuel and i had a hard time finding petrol station out in the stix. I was dreading to see the low fuel light go on and I started pictured me having to call someone to bring a jerrycan of fuel in the middle of county Wexford (SHAME!). But saved by the bell, I found a petrol station before the low fuel light came on. Expecting to have to fill from near empty - the bike took about 10 Euro's worth of fuel. . So now the satnav is set to 155 miles range and lets see how that goes... Already the Hitchcock's silencer has earned me back the difference in price between the pig iron AWS. I could have pocketed more, if I just went for the Hitchcock's in the first place :) So interested to see what you get out of the bike in terms of mileage with the silencer installed, I take it you still run the original ECU?

Well if it helps I'm finding the bike will give me around 200 miles before the light comes on and I have also noticed a mid range performance improvement!
@frankysworld
@frankysworld 3 жыл бұрын
@@stuartfillingham 200 miles sounds reasonable - I would have to take in account that the extra bit of power from the piggy back ECU doesn't come for free. I'm going to keep an eye on it and see where I get now before the light comes on. I'm just a bit scared of that light as I often find myself in the middle of nowhere and was caught out just once - it scarred me for life, hence programming the GPS to give me plenty of heads up :)

Aside from that secondary baffle, is there any other baffling inside that silencer? I have a Honda xl125s with a straight scrambler type silencer. It says "absorption type baffling", does that mean the silencer itself reduces noise, or I would need to install an absorption type baffle? I know thats probably a stupid question, but on the inside of the silencer there's a perforated pipe thats been welded in, but it doesn't seem to make my bike any quieter on it's own.

Important question. Aftermarket exaust don't produce adequate back pressure as compared to the stock exaust which results in pickup reduction and increased vibration due to sound of the exaust. Is it the same story with hitchcock exausts? I'm from India and I own a limited Edition Tribute Black 500. I mean in order to get a decent exaust tone you have give up milage and pickup which is trade off.

I've also got the same silencer in the garage. For anyone who has fitted it what's the view of your insurer? Generally I appreciate it's a grey area around noise - which isn't nt an issue for this pipe. But it doesn't bear a standard stamp so is technically not road legal - has anyone had any issues with their insurers?

Per Haps 26 seconds ago (edited) Hi Stuart I'm have just bought one of the last Enfield 500s, a Works Trials replica. I know there's a rather expensiveTribute model coming which is actually the last of the series and looks good from the pics, but it has been delayed due to pandemic problems in India. I like the look of the Trials version with the upswept can and the rack. I've been riding for over 40 years and have always disliked carrying passengers so the inability to take pillions on the Trials suits me. Still running-in with only about 110 miles on the clock so far. I've decided to do this by the book, which as you know is very frustrating due to the low speeds required. However towards the end of the full run-in or maybe just after, I intend to give it some short full throttle bursts to the rev limiter, which some commentators think helps to iron out the vibes in the longer term. Even at the moment though, I'm not disappointed with the vibes, I knew what to expect and it hasn't been as bad though the mirrors often show three cars behind when there's only one! I've watched all your vids on this bike and would like to thank you for all the assistance and information you have provided. Have ordered the Haynes manual because I intend to do my own servicing and this plus your tips on oil changes etc. will prove valuable I'm sure. Thanks again.

The available aftermarket parts list for RE in India is way more extensive than you might think, there are manufacturers in Delhi who will make a custom silencer for you if you wish so, Swagman and Gursewak have amazing options(just don't go for those superloud ones)

Dear Stuart plz make a video explainig about carberry vibration reduction plate and it's practical applications on the RE 500 and 350 Engines, it'd definitely help many enfield enthusiast in india.,as we have many mixed reviews about the product in question and unable to make a decesion on it, your knowledge would be very helpful in making a decesion.

The UK ,Euro and US versions of this bike have learning ECUs so there no need to make any adjustments. I would be surpised if the Indian versions are any different. these are lean burn engines so theres no need to worry about it.

Sad to say but the 'shine' of new ownership of my Hitchcock Enfield silencer has made me feel really blue after 1500 miles and so is the silencer, very disappointed in lack of quality. Certainly not the quality of my Bonneville British Customs silencers (purchase influenced by Mr. SF) and very happy with after 5000+miles, of course more expensive but at £194 including small heat shield, for one from Hitchcock, not what I expected.

Stuart, what cemetery or churchyard keeps getting shown intermittently on your videos on the Classic 500 and the Chrome models and if I am not mistaken, the Interceptor as well? You never say anything on it although being a History lover and in particular England's medieval period, I am emboldening myself to ask. If not a botheration, as my focus should be on your videos content and not what gets shown in the background, you may or may not answer and I shall not be disappointed. Thanks.
