This is a video covering the removal of a leaky suspension fork oil seal and whilst the suspension is in bits I've had some parts made to increase the fork travel and ride height.

Hi, what I used to enjoy about early Honda telescopic forks was the inclusion of drain plugs. Made oil changes and experimentations of viscosities more easily than with today's equipment. Nt including fork oil drains may save manufacturing costs, but sheesh. Anyways, there is a niche market for someone with the equipment to add telescopic fork drain plugs. It's so much easier and quicker to do. " Hey! "

Yea they are nice, our KE175 has them. I suspect they stopped adding them as most people probably don’t touch them until there is a problem

Thanks Pete, comments like this are most appreciated. I hope they are useful to people even if its just showing what bits and pieces are inside. Folks don't necessarily have to follow to letter as there are usually multiple ways of tackling the same jobs.

Excellent video I'm surprised the seal's went with such a low mileage. Just like you I wanted to firm up the front forks and considered the spacers you used. Rather than get the kit I bought stiffer springs and pre load adjusters. I also raised the handlebars by 30mm to give the space for the adjusters and to improve the riding position. Being tall the riding position is perfect for me now. Keep up the good work. Stay safe

Yea I was surprised too. On investigation, the retaining clip had rusted quite a lot on that leg and I suspect a flake of rust perhaps got in the seal. I've put in plenty of grease to try and prevent a repeat.

thanks Mr Dorman for another great video. I am hoping my seals last a little longer than yours did. Still so happy with the spacers that Graham sent me. I am hoping he is getting a few orders from down under.

Thanks Ian, Yes i hope everyones last a bit longer than mine. Worth pulling your dust seals and cleaning and put a bit of grease on the spring clips. That can all be done on bike. It’s amazing where he’s sending stuff. He’s got himself one of those scratch off maps to record it! Keeping him occupied in lockdown.

I had the same problem undoing the 8 mm bottom bolts. They are really tight, a nightmare.. I adapted length of angle iron and used it down the inside to stop the damper rod rotating. Worked OK but I know there is a special tool available. Trouble is it will not get enough use for me to bother.

That taper on the bottom bit there might be a way to slow down the oil flow at the bottom of the travel. Just to slow the rate a touch so it won't bottom harshly. Nice work on catching the way it fits in the tube there!

Thank you! Considered it but the tall rear tyre counteracts it anyway, though this will change as the blocks wear so may need to revisit. I can't go much further or it will be too tall for me!

If the bolts were broken they'd come out the bottom. Your dampers are spinning.

@@DormanDiaries Hi, thanks so much for the reply! I need to know the original size of the fork tube because I want to buy some colored anti-friction treated fork tubes, do they need to know the size to see if they are the same size? I'll try to get the information on Royal parts, can they help me know? Thank you very much!🙏

@@DormanDiaries Did you reduce the length of Spacer tube too? If not, can it be the reason for the oil leakage as there is less space for the spring-spacer combination after extended damping rod.👍🏽

I'm looking for that measurement too, I'm planning on building a hybrid with stock Himalayan innards but may need different length fork tubes and modified preload spacers. Himalayan tubes are 684mm, too long for a 650, I'm thinking ~628-635mm is what I want, would love to read stock 650 tube length somewhere but I'll likely have to measure for myself. Preload spacer lengths are listed with each part in Hitchcocks partsbook.

I have the same problem with a leaking fork seal! I've got roughly the same mileage on my bike as you do. I assumed some debris got in it while I was riding on dirt roads, as I don't have gaiters. Possibly that was it, although I'd be interested to know if any other people had the same problem.

I don't think the dust seals are very good, I'm uploading my next vid tonight look out for that re the dust seals. I had corrosion around the spring clip in the one that leaked. Pull your dust seal and have a look, that's really easy.

@@DormanDiaries Instead of swapping the whole tube, you can simply swap the whole internal parts (Spring coils, Plungers/Damping rods and spacer tube). At the most, you may have to shorten the spacer tube a bit I guess due to extra length of spring coil of Himalayan. Think about it and let me know of your thoughts/findings.
