Having almost bought a Royal Enfield Meteor a year ago, but buying a classic 500 instead, I finally get to test ride one to see what I have been missing.

Awesome TAYM, you finally got to see and feel what the amazing Meteor is all about ! The thing about it is, within a couple of miles of riding one, you feel completely relaxed and at ease with the bike. I'd never ridden a cruiser before, nor had I ever used a heel and toe shifter. But like you, within a couple of miles I was like "ok, that's how how it works, fine !". After that, no nasty surprises, everything just falls to hand or foot, a totally relaxing and stress free riding experience, even on a brand new bike ! I have done over 300 miles on a tankful, so it is indeed possible. The mpg is usually over 100 with my usual mix of riding. With regard to the turn in, that's why you have wide bars on it. Just give them a good shove and the front falls into the bend. I think that's how people manage to hustle heavy cruisers like Harleys. You use a lot of counter-steering to get the front to get on the edge of the tyre. And of course, as you say, if you want to press on a bit, moving up towards the tank puts more weight on the front and also helps. Thanks for the mention ! Yes, I have now turned my Fireball into a baby bagger, adding practicality and even more of a cruiser vibe to what was already a beautiful looking bike. I like your senses test....I think you should lick every bike you test, just to see how it tastes though, personally 😜 Once fully run-in the Meteor has all of the performance I need for a relaxing weekend ride in the mountains. Why pay more for more power I will hardly ever use ? And of course, with petrol prices as they are, I can still afford to ride it as much as I like, thanks to the amazing fuel economy. For my use case, the Meteor is the perfect hobby motorcycle. As soon as I sit on it, I feel totally at ease, at home and every ride is just stress free, pure enjoyment. And then of course there is the low price of entry. It really is a fantastic motorcycle and deserves the success it has had. It has some "magic" about it. Once ridden, smitten ! My Meteor now has 6000 km on it ( in 11 months ) and has not had a single issue and still looks brand new, so the quality is there ( although of course I am a fair weather only rider 😂 ). Really enjoyed watching you enjoy the Meteor TAYM. I could relate to everything you picked up on. It is indeed splendiferous !!! Cheers sir, you are a man of excellent taste. ER.

😂😂that’s marvellous, I can’t see why anyone would want anything bigger, expect perhaps for two up cruises. There really isn’t any other bike like it. It’s in a class of its own and therefore a class leader that will set the benchmark for any one else who is brave enough to attempt to replicate.

I rarely take mine over 55 ( even though it will do 70) . It's so comfortable you could ride it to the moon . I love mine 👍ps I do get 300 miles per tank so start looking for fuel at 250 with no problems. It's also worth noting that the rear suspension is a bit too firm from new , I thought I'd give mine a few miles and see if I felt they needed to be swapped out , but I found after 5½k happy miles that it settles in and is now fine .

I found the heel toe shifter awkward, because the heel to toe angles were completely wrong - the heel stopped you from using the toe, and the toe stopped you from using the heel comfortably.

Splendiferous review, bloody marvellous! They have a matt green one now, though not sure it'll be available here. I think the choice of colours is more limited in the UK. I too love the switches, they are like the honda XR dirt bikes of the 70's. I like it in red, but the blue supernovas are nice too. Hard choice.

Nobody has yet mentioned the "C" [CHAIN] word. Because the Meteor delivers it's power smoothly and doesn't have a massive amount of top end power the chain doesn't get; stretched, damaged "O" rings or need attention every three days. It's just there, and a modicum of maintenance and occasional re-tensioning will keep it happy. That's unlike snatchy, dump the clutch at high revs, superbikes.

Switch buttons? You mean rotary switches that have been around for a century or so? How innovative! That said, my test ride was enjoyable, the bike handled well, and the balance between power deficiency but enjoy efficiency (coming from a Triumph Nightstorm 1700 and a BMW F800ST) was a big net plus for the Meteor! Thank you to Newcombe Bros Chelmsford! Awesome folks there.

I was at Haywards yesterday to book in for some work on my bike and it was pretty busy. Not sure how the Meteor would fair on the dual carriageways west of Dry Drayton on my irregular commute. If the Interceptor came in black engine as an option, like most of the Meteors I'd be sorely tempted.

well with no fairing 70mph is plenty and you're unlikely to get into trouble, both with the law and with yourself as bikes like this, the classic, scram etc don't make you think you're Mick Doohan. There's a lot to be said about the enjoyment of plodding along enjoying the view on a bike that will do 75 flat out in 5th rather than a bike that will do 75 on tickover in 1st.
