Royal Thai Air Force SAAB JAS-39C/D Gripen Exercise Pitch Black 2018

Exercise Pitch Black 2018 witnessed many firsts, and one of those was the return arrival of the Royal Thai Air Force with their SAAB JAS-39C/D Gripen Fighters from 701 Squadron, which are based at RTAF Base Surat Thani, in the southern region of Thailand. This deployment created many opportunities for the visiting crews and participating nations associated with ExPB18 to perfect their skills in the art of aerial warfare.
ASO’s videographer Mark Pourzenic was privileged to have obtained access during one of the morning launches and afternoon recoveries during the Exercise at RAAF Base Darwin as the Gripens taxied out for departure and their return.

Even as a Brit, I have to admit that the Gripen is probably the best choice for any country that's on a budget and only really wants to buy them in relatively small numbers, like Brazil, Finland, Thailand etc. Superbly engineered. Hats off to Sweden :)

@@Aeronaut1975 Agreed. Internet sources tell that Saab is offering 64+ Gripens and atleast 3 Saab electronic surveillance planes. Assembly would be done in Finland by Patria.

Low maintenance per flying hour, designed to go up in any weather and any condition. Low failure rate. Yeah. These birds do get a lot of airtime.

This event must be watch by the Philippine Air Force for re evaluation of MRF ACQUISITION PROJECT...even in 2013 US - NATO Exercise, this Gripen fight had proven it's unique capabilities on show a semi stealth capabilities and advanced avionics that are almost semilar to f-35 that gave a huge head to the American made 4++ gen fighter such F-15 E strike eagle and F-16.

@@focus678 SAAB automotive and SAAB aircraft are not the same company. Long time ago it was, but the cars was sold to GM (USA). And they didn't sell enough cars to make profit. Sad they made great cars, look at the Aero X.

If you main goal mostly defensive I think this is a very good airplane because it's very cost effective. If you do alot of attacking then must have bigger twin engine for more range and carry heavier weapons.

They are air refuellable and can reload and refuel closer to the action and at the cost of a gripen you could fly two compared to the Rafle or Eurofighter and the F-35 at $44.000 an hour with only 4 missiles if in stealth mode

SAAB J29 Tunnan in Kongo JAS 39 Gripen C in Libya Swedish airspace is often broken by Russia and sometimes the Swedish Airforce "turns" with Russian planes.

No, not true. The engine used in the Gripen C/D is the RM12 which is a variant of/based on the General Electric F404 engine for the F/A-18A/B/C/D Hornet: www.geaviation.com/sites/default/files/datasheet-RM12.pdf www.geaviation.com/sites/default/files/datasheet-F404-Family.pdf And it has nothing to do with the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, which is a different jet and uses the F414-GE-400 engine: www.geaviation.com/sites/default/files/datasheet-F414-Family.pdf

The execise tells me that if gripen fails with long range missiles then gripen will lose in close combat against the least advanced SU 27 fighter.

Those Gripen C/D kicked US ass in their last Red Flags exercises. The E/F version is even better. You are underrating the plane just because you're American with a large DoD budget to sit on it. You only know American planes, you breathe American technology. What you know about Swedish technology? Saab was created in the Cold War to intercept/counter-attack Russian's aircraft.
