I am Mexican, and I can’t get over how much Croatia reminds me of Mexico! Watching this video of you at your in-law’s house reminds me so much of my abuela’s house. We even have those type of 40 year old blankets! Except in Mexico there’s typically a tiger (not sure why) or the Virgin Mary on the blankets 😂

I grew up in a traditional Croatian home in America. We spoke almost no English and I can say this video is accurate.. Man I miss my childhood. My dad hung and smoked all our bacon and ALWAYS had parachute with green onions and homemade bread to eat... Always had for anyone who would stop for a visit. 🇭🇷💙

Every family has different plates for guests and for everyday use. They are saving the best ones for special occasions which is kind of funny :D

Very well described average Croatian home, I do not drink Turkish coffee but nescafe, but I always have it at home because of the guests, as well as a few coffee pots. I always have pomegranate tea because it is the best, but also at least 5 other types of tea. Several crosses and a Catholic calendar are a must on the wall. I always have jam in the fridge for pancakes, as well as wafers and biscuits at home. Honey is also a must have,as is brandy!

I have something that no other Croat has - it is very special to me and very unique - It is the Captain of Croatias armband that Zvonomir Boban wore at the first game in the history of Croatia at the world cup against Jamaica. He came over to me at the end of the game and gave it to me.

I am Croatian living in Canada (Vancouver), and I can say when I found here rosehip jam, I was so happy. Most of the things are totally true, but some things vary from region to region. I am originally from Istria, but I had the opportunity to live for 6 years in Split, and I traveled often to Slavonija, because i have family there. So, there are some differences. Overall, everything is well done said. Your croatian is amazing, good job :-)

Yup. Had every single one of those growing up. And when we moved to the US from Zagreb 50 years ago, we brought the blankets, except ours were red and black. They lasted for DECADES!

I'm loving this channel. My mom moved to Canada when she was 14, and married a Canadian guy. As such, I didn't have much exposure to Croatian culture, growing up - as my mom attempted to assimilate into Canadian culture as much as possible. Anyway, I'm finding your channel heartwarming. I am Albanian and I can relate to a lot of things in the video: coffee pots (xhezve) thermometer, blankets, slippers, extra cookies for guests, rakija, calendar. I think Balkan countries have the same traditions.

Rakija is universal. It's a medicine, it's a drink, it can be used for everything.

That most Croats have these things in their house. My personal favorite is the cross that my father hand-carved, a wicker basket and bedding from my great-grandmother 70 years old. I keep these things special and one day my children will inherit them

Dear Sarah, Hi, I'm a new subscriber. Your Croatian is amazing. The language is difficult even for many Croats. Never stop patting yourself on the back for that. And your family is adorable, I love how they all support what you do. I'd just edit the title of this a tiny bit because this applies more to TRADITIONAL homes. Older people, rural areas, etc. The population is 90% Catholic only on paper. In recent years, more and more people stray away from the Church and live in more modern homes, so you won't find crucifixes and stickers with saints in every home and the calendars/namedays aren't a huge thing either. I can't wait to see what you do next and thanks for loving our homeland as your own (I mean, it IS your homeland now too lol).

Very interesting! I live with my Australian born Croatian partner and his dad lives with us, watching your videos has given me some sense as to why he does certain things. I don’t really feel the cold much and in winter, sometimes I’m barefoot and he tells me off 😂 We definitely have vegeta in our house, lots of biscuits, but no lace decor. We do have the Croatian flag hanging in our loungeroom and Dida has shirts and hats with the famous checkers! When my brother in law and sister in law come over every week for dinner, they have their own slippers here too. Haven’t heard of the draft thing though.

I can confirm it is all true! We use rakija for cleaning windows and lowering temperature when you have flu or something like that

I am living in Greece and most of these items are also found in a Greek household.Tip: if your coffee pots have a narrowd brim, the coffee will have a nice foam on it. We call the Turkish coffee Greek coffee... but neither is correct because it is actually of Arab origin. Pleased to see all your video's and so good to see your MIL is participating.

Yeah, that's pretty accurate. Even as Croats living in Ireland we have most of these in our house, down to the 40 year old blanket my baka gave me and the lace decor she made herself. My mom even has a lace of a crucifix baka made framed and on the wall (2 in 1 😅) in her house.

Thank you for making this video. It feels like walking through my parent’s house. The thing with those blankets, they really are the warmest. I remember buying some nicer looking ones at Indigo in Canada and they function was almost cosmetic, so I went back to the old-school ones. They don’t match anything in my house, but when I’m cold, I know what does the job.

In Istra we have domestic Orahovac. It is made of unripe walnuts dissolved in rakija (rakiya) for 40 day, out of the house on the sun. People use it as drink for guests, and medicine for tummy (if it hurts).

Your Špek 🥓 has a lot of meat to it. Most of the Špek I come across has about a minimum of 90% fat, including the Špek I have in my fridge right now. As an Englishman who lives alone in Croatia, and rarely has visitors, I still have most of your list in my flat, including the four cup džezva - I know my measurements. Interestingly, Turkish coffee is not actually Turkish but Bosnian. The Turks 'cook' their coffee by putting the grinds in the pot before the water and heat the water and grinds at the same time, as you see Americans do in cowboy films. The technique of boiling the water first, then adding the coffee grinds to the freshly boiled water, then reboiling the water was developed in Bosnia. (Just an interesting fact about a misnamed technique.) I would say that you forgot honey. I don't think I've been in a Croatian home that didn't have honey. And most have homemade honey given by or bought from a friend, or friend of a friend. Honey, especially sweet 'blossom' honey goes perfectly with čaj od Šipka (Rosehip tea), and increases the antiviral effects of the rosehip tea.

All those things are so similiar to the ones you can find in Polish home! thank you for another interesting video, pozdrav :)

One addition...sandwich presses. People may not have a toaster like almost everyone in North America, but I have found these presses the press is pretty ubiquitous in Croatian homes.

The Lace Decor cracked me up, so true 😂😂😂!. That, along with most items in here, especially the foods, will be found across most households in the former Yugoslavia. I use Vegeta in lieu of salt in pretty much anything that is boiled or fried lol.

The slippers are because most houses have tiles and they get pretty cold in the winter. Even today some houses have no heating, especially at the sea. So socks in slippers make sense😂

As an architect and designer, Dida's "not so well aligned" last sticker is poking my eyes. I almost tried to fix it on my computer screen 😂 PS: I replace everything salt with vegeta - even use it in my salads

Wow! Having lived in 4 different counrties, I ultimately settled for Portugal. And... guess what.... except for the rosehips.....one will find the same customs and items in Portuguese homes. Amazing!

Hahahaha, you nailed it!! I'm Croatian and traditional homes trully have all what you mentioned, like the rosehip tea and don't forget camomile tea (!!). My grandma knows all the tea types and the purposes they serve for. She stores Napolitanke and Domaćice on her wardrobe in the bedroom and has hundreds of old blankets!! It's copy > paste, swear to God!! Speaking generally, modern generations are really different; they abandoned huge part of that tradition (lace on the table or on the tv -.-, what?) and have much modernised the interior. P. S. Your Croatian is really good. :) enjoy!

Those old blankets are made from sheep wool and that makes them special, they are much warmer and durable, you can't find them anymore. New blankets are mostly made from artificial fibers and cotton, while nicer they are not half as good. Ps, your croatian is excellent, usually english speaking people are terrible at learning other languages but you sound like you've been living here for at least 20 yrs 🙂 Keep up the great content
