Why not bring in another Brazilian who fought in vale tudo to fight in tournament? or even a top level judo fighter. Royce was picked cause he’d listen to anything his brother said. Rickson who was a true badass wasn’t controllable. There were tryouts for the first ufc. They weren’t necessarily looking for the best fighters. Bjj is my favorite martial art. the gracies achieved what they were after. Royce still had to win tournament.

He was literally the only person allowed to wear their style’s uniform. Ken Shamrock had to lose his wrestling shoes, others had to drop portions of their gear. Gracie was literally the only one who was allowed to wear the entire thing and he used it completely to his advantage, of course. It was all setup to be a Gracie win, a glorified commercial for GJJ. I wouldn't say "all" others cause that's too concrete. But, Helio lost to who was literally the best JJJ/Judoka in Japan and had been for years, while BJJ was still evolving. But, Helio also choked out the #2 JJJ player. So, there's that. BJJ has definitely shown to be one of the best MAs. And, they even added the kimura to it's art and developed strats around it. Most TMAs, like JJJ, have stayed stagnant in their traditions, regardless of it's real world applications. BJJ/GJJ has been evolving to be more effective, based on what does and doesn't work in real life scenarios

@@MyZ001 I agree with you that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has definitely come a long way from it’s origins. However with that said Judokas most definitely can beat BJJ practitioners even out side of the mat. In fact I would say it is much better outside of the mat. I say this for a variety of reasons. First is that Judo also has submissions like chokes and joint locks. Judokas would definitely know how to escape them. And secondly they are not afraid of take downs. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu doesn’t have the best take downs and that is a big reason why some Jiu Jitsu guys have a lot of trouble in the MMA world. Judoka on the other hand has good take down defence. Thirdly slamming is much more dangerous when you don’t land on the mat. One slam on solid ground or concrete will end the fight especially for BJJ guys who aren’t taught how to break a fall. And Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi will make it even worse as Judokas are used to using that to their advantage in slams as well. Overall I highly doubt a BJJ practitioner will win in a confrontation against a Judoka outside the mat. There is a very valid reason why Helio choose to have his bout against Kimura on soft mats. Slams are no joke.

I remember being a young martial arts student when it happened and all of a sudden everyone in school was talking about Royce Gracie (With an R lol) the events Rickson fought in were credible but didnt have to same level of exposure and marketing. Royce was really the one to unveil GJJ to the rest of the world

The Gracie's started the UFC to promote/showcase their skills, they had been doing challenges for many years and were very successful beating allcomers, in UFC 1 Ken shamrock was told that he couldn't kick if he wore wrestling boots as these were considered a weapon, so he was under the impression that Royce wouldn't be able to use his Gi as a weapon, so when Royce applied ( I think suso jime ) he thought that it was an illegal move and although he tapped he thought that the ref would recognise this.

Shamrock never claimed he didn't tap. I watched the fight on UFC Fight Pass he states that he tapped 4 or 5 times before the referee stops it which you can see in the video.
