Picked up a pair of the "upgrades" to one of my favorite speakers, the Klipsch RP600M. We do an unboxing, then both objectively and subjectively compare the two version and see if I end up replacing my OG model.

Thanks for your review. I got the OG's recently on Amazon for $350 (still in box while I wait for my DAC). Best Buy has the newer ones on sale for $419, and I thought about returning the OG's in favor of the new one because of all the positive reviews I've seen on youtube. But after seeing your review I decided to hold on to the OG's. I'll spend that money on a sub instead. Thanks again and keep pushing out those awesome contents.

Totally agree with your assessment. In fact, you helped me decide to pull the trigger on a pair of original RP-600M's, which they're now practically giving away. I picked up an open box pair for $320.00! I got more for less! The latest doesn't necessarily mean the greatest. Excellent job showing the frequency response graph, thanks!

They are $419 USA now. I also picked up this speaker in the summer. I ordered GR-Research upgrade kit for $369 and includes No Rez, 16AWG Solid wire, Tube Connectors, SONICAP Gen1, JB JFX Film cap, Inductors Solid Copper and Jantzen Resistors. So, I also have ordered Higher Grade Inductors "Mundorf CFC16" Copper Foil", Ohmite Audio Gold Resistors and still reviewing film caps. This will be posted on Audiokarma for this Upgrade project.

I did there kit on a gen 1 and I kept the sonicap and swapped the other for a mundorf. Sounds pretty good to me compared to stock. Seems to hold together more with aretha franklin’s vocals. I power w the 6sq7 amp and it seems to have just enough power even w the decreased efficiency. I usually run it wide open though

That's instructive. Danny spends his time flattening the curve, but not listening to the results, because he "knows" from experience that the flatter curve will be better....but maybe not for everyone....

I've owned mine for about 3 yearsto replace Monitor Audio. I bought them new and paid the normal price at the time. I compared them to many brands and did some limited testing. My original plan was to hook them up to a Tube Amplifier. I did use them with a very expensive transistor amplifier before moving to a new column loudpeaker. I've now got them working in my office/spare room on a ten year old Pioneer integrated with 45 watts at 8 Ohms on steel stands with sand infill. I also use the loudness on the Pioneer and/or a little EQ to a DAC. I might even buy a second hand graphic equalizer for fun! They sound fantastic! Plenty of bass and the rest is just great. I honestly enjoy them as much as my new 4.000 euro loudspeakers (bought second hand). They don't have the transparent 3D thing but make up for it in energy, bass control. Try and pick up a pair on the used market. I can't imagine selling mine for the moment. I would recommend stands and just get a pair for that spare room....the one you go to beacuse she doesn't want to you to play music loud while she's on Netflix!

They're nice quality speakers, but I find it a bit disappointing Klipsch is so dishonest about the efficiency, they're rated at 96dB/2.83V/1m from the manufacturer, but several reviewers found they're only 89dB/2.83V/1m, that's a huge difference, taking them from high efficiency to just normal efficiency. And their impedance electrical phase makes them not very tube friendly. Sorry, just a small rant.

One thing you can do when building a tube amp is use output transformers with a higher Z than the minimum required. You give up a few % of power, but now have an amp capable of driving a wider variety of speakers!

I have a pair of 600ms along with Klipsch Heritage La Scala and Chorus 2. I used an OSHA calibrated meter with 1 watt at 1K hz at 3’on all 3. The Heritage speaker where dead on listed specs. The 600M measured 90.5 db. I was told Klipsch now uses a different method using a range of frequencies that is more accurate. But if everyone doesn’t use the same systems it’s pretty much irrelevant for comparison. I don’t like what they are doing either. That being said I still like the 600M
@TheStuffMade
@TheStuffMade 8 ай бұрын
@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics Sure, you could also add some global feedback from the secondary side of the output transformers back to the input, that would probably do more to lower the output impedance, but still you'll likely have more than 1 ohm output impedance, and with these speakers going from below 4 ohm in the low frequencies to 15+ ohm in the high frequencies (ignoring the extreme peaks) you'd still get 20% variation in the frequency response, as in low frequencies will be attenuated compared to high frequencies. So they'll end up sounding thin with little bass. Cheers, Jake

Finally subscribed. I think a lot of people are split between the old and new version of this speaker. Personally I haven't heard either one, but I am a fan of almost all of their Heritage line of speakers. Other Klipsch speakers I've heard all sounded bright to me. Of course the Heritage line is way more expensive so may be out of range for a lot of people.

Interesting that you prefer the originals. I'm considering a pair for use on the bench when I'm building tube amps. My main reference a Cornwall MKiv and I recently bought a nice pair of Heresy 11's believing I'd need to adjust the crossovers to calm them down, no such thing! I'd leave the 11's exactly as they are, they sound perfect in my living room driven by a fully Skunkie modded (cascode) Boyuurange A50 MK111. Just perfect. I think I'll very likely buy a pair of 600m for bench. Can't stand dull lack lustre loudspeakers. Thanks for review 👍

The flip the box over seems to be the best way to get them out :). This is a case, which I highlighy often, where measurements on paper do not match the real world performance. Something can look fantastic on paper, but when you put it in the room, it can not sound the way paper says they should. You need to listen to speakers, not go on specs. I was tossing up between the Klipsch RP-600M and the Wharfedale Evo 4.1's, and I ended up going the Wharfedales as I like that slightly warmer sound of the Wharefales, but I have enjoyed the Klipsch sound previously. Maybe as I get older my taste has changed a little :). I think the 600M's are a great speaker, and they often go on sale, which makes them reasonably good value for the performance. Klipsch speakers often are bright, and I think it is the horn tweeter that makes them sound brighter. Placement is pretty critical to get the right sound. I had the same thing with the Wharfedale Evo's as well, maybe due to the AMT tweeter. Placement was really critical to imaging and response.

Speakers are so dependent on things like room size etc. People tell me I need a pair of La Scala, I'm pretty sure they aren't gonna work in my tiny house and I'd have to remove 1/2 the furniture to even have space for them. There you go, it’s not about the measurements it’s about the sound you like. That’s why tone controls are necessary and not optional. One man or woman’s distortion is another’s sonic bliss. Different rooms, different ears, measurements give you a way to graphically compare one speaker to another but it ultimately comes down to taste. Thanks for another fun video.
@SkunkieDesignsElectronics
@SkunkieDesignsElectronics 8 ай бұрын
I honestly have not found any "tone controls" that don't somehow harm the sound in some other way. It's why I work to shape the tone curve to my room with specific tubes, speakers etc. But yeah, subjective reviews are 100% personal taste, it's why I also like to provide measurements!
@BobTrainor
@BobTrainor 8 ай бұрын
@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics I agree with you Skunkie. Measurements are critical, and they are a great way to objectively ‘see’ what a speaker or piece of equipment is doing, especially compared with one another. But ultimately you like what you like, and it doesn’t matter what the measurements say. Case in point, new RP600M vs old, new measures better, but you like the old. Same thing happened with your review of the little Decware Zen. Didn’t measure well, THD too high for you, but others love it. Some people like chocolate some people like vanilla. All that being said, I do think measurements are extremely important, but in the end it’s ultimately personal preference that rules the day. Measurements get you in the ball Park, but then it comes down to individual ears, and listening rooms. That’s why tone controls are required (put in a defeat switch for the purists) A perfectly flat response might not work for my old ears, or my poor listening room that my wife won’t let me treat. So those tone controls come in handy for us old audiophiles that just want the music to sound good. I know you know what I’m talking about, you’re a self proclaimed bass head. Some songs might just need a little bump in that bass and that’s what the bass knob is for. Lol. 🤣 Thanks for commenting back to me. Always enjoy your videos. Hope you have a wonderful day, and many hours of enjoyable listening. Peace ✌️

Looks like Klipsch addressed the crossover region suck-out. Also, they addressed what some said was some excess brightness. This won't be the revamp everyone thought they wanted apparently. That said, I think a lot of folks will like the new ones regardless, but the real value seems to be the original version, especially at the current time when they have deep discounts available. Your review made a lot of sense to me especially as many of us have diminished high frequency hearing due to age. Thanks.

100% And I warn people that my high frequency hearing, like many older folks, is weak and what sounds great to me, might not to someone in their 20's. That said, what sounds good to a 30 year old reviewer, might sound flat and dull to someone who is 60+.

You are totally right about the placement, they are very sensitive to the distance from the back wall, I recommend starting with them pretty close and then moving them out inch by inch until you get the best balance of bass response, too close and they will be a little boomy in the mid bass and too far away, the base will fall off a cliff and they will sound bright and thin. They also sound killer with a REL tzero sub

I was excited to receive the rp600m ii's. I ran them for days before I gave them a good listen. I was sad to hear how dull and sort of anemic they were. They aren't a bad speaker but I was not excited to hear them. The mid range is very shouty and dull. The tweeter also lost it's sparkle. I've come to the conclusion that there are people like Erin and gr research that like a flat neutral speaker. And there is us folks that like U and V share curve speakers. I remember back in the 80's and 90's as a kid when everyone had graphic eq's and spectrum analyzers. I always put a big old dip down in the mid section. That is what made it sound correct to my weird ears. Almost as if you gave it depth. I agree with you on your review of these speakers. Not a bad speaker but not for the v curve crowd. Have you ever heard the Yamo c93ii? They have an even deeper drop in the mid range and an exciting tweeter. The most exciting tweeter i have heard.

I think the obsession with speakers being dead flat is crazy. If the sound of a pair speakers makes you happy and keeps listening, then they are good speakers for you. End of discussion. I like slightly warm speakers that have a good soundstage both in depth and size. I'll gladly give up some detail to get that. That makes me happy and other people love their detail and sparkling high end and that's good for them. Others with a lot of money keep seeking the end of the rainbow but will never get there IMHO. People just getting into the hobby need to stop letting others tell them what's good. What's good is what brings a smile to your face and makes it hard to stop listening.

If you think the PR600M speakers suck and I love them, you probably shouldn't take my advice on speakers, just saying :)

@SkunkieDesignsElectronics I don't take anyone's advice as gospel, I have been buying electronics/home audio equipment since the early 80's, right now we have a Marantz cd player and Marantz receiver, 12 guage svs brand speaker cables and audio quest interconnect cable
