The City of the Gods is a legendary adventure from Dave Arneson's Blackmoor campaign. In 1987 TSR released a module based on it, but how faithful was it to Dave Arneson's original creation?

Expedition to the Barrier Peaks was one of the best modules to come out of 1st Edition. Goodman Games' Original Adventures Reincarnated gave it a lavish and loving treatment, including new art that seamlessly matches the old artwork, an additional level of the ship to explore, and several supplemental encounters and alternate adventure hooks. If you haven't already been reviewing the OAR series, you may want to consider it.

Captain Corajus - thanks for another interesting and fun review. I think your review also highlighted why it really is Gary Gygax who is responsible for making D&D become such a ubiquitous gaming success. Dave Arneson had some very good ideas but as so many businesses discover, a good idea by itself is just not enough. Success requires practical ability to take an idea and turn it into something that people can grasp, will desire, and will purchase. Gary provided that not Mr Arneson.

As a person that's run a business since the early 90s, I completely agree with your assessment. I've sort of touched on this in my review of D&D basic. Its like Wosniack and Jobs. Ideas are great, but turning that idea into marketable product with wide spread appeal is another animal entirely.

From what I've heard from some Tim Kask interviews and elsewhere, Arneson was mostly just a gamer with some great ideas that he could execute on his own but rarely put into writing or even well-conceived notes. Apparently he was notoriously difficult to work with, which could explain more of the falling out between him and Gygax and possibly Ritchie. Not trying to disrespect the dead but still

FWIW the Star Trek link is even closer than you make out - Trek's SS Beagle was part of the Merchant Service but it was specifically a survey ship like the FSS Beagle and the historical vessel, not some kind of freighter or cargo ship. Both Trek and D&D were almost certainly inspired by A.E. van Vogt's 1950 novel (actually a fix-up of four earlier short stories) Voyage of the Space Beagle - which is a pretty good read for its age, I might add.
@captcorajus
@captcorajus 3 жыл бұрын
Oh, cool. I wasn not aware of the Voyage of the Space Beagle, though certainly a lot of Sci/Fi authors were inspire by Darwin's 'Survey' cruise, and the amazing discoveries made during that fateful voyage. Interesting fact, Darwin ATE a lot of his subjects... Turtles, pumas, Armadillos, etc.
@richmcgee434
@richmcgee434 3 жыл бұрын
@@captcorajus I've heard that one as well. I actually had a Darwin homage in an old 90s Spelljammer campaign who had a similarly disturbing taste for his specimens. Problem being that he was a unknown species of humanoid from some distant sphere and regarded the locals as potential subjects (and meals) when the opportunity arose. The PCs worked for him as guides and hunters for several months in game time before they finally twigged to their boss being behind some mysterious disappearances of NPCs they'd known. Wound up in a big tussle with him and his giff mercenary bodyguards. The party won only because they hastily faked some evidence to convince the mercs he'd nommed on a few of their fellow giff and the boss was silly enough to panic and turn on them when they started wavering. Of course, they did find the remains of an actual dissected giff in the guy's belongings afterward, but the party had no idea it was there, it was all bluff on their end.

Just my thoughts on this and to help you with the algorithm. First I really deeply enjoy that you provide historical detail on these modules. I've been playing for about 35 years and I'm still learning things. That said, I'm not a huge fan of these black moor settings. So far both modules have been a rehash of a Star Trek episode. Is very little originality, and the idea of a time traveling in being used I agree with you it causes way too many problems and confusions. There has to have been better or easier ways to put these modules into play.

I wanted to put it this as a separate comment, have you ever thought about trying to obtain and do reviews on the hackmaster versions of East classic modules? Or the game itself? If you are unfamiliar, hackmaster was a fictional game in the Knights of the dinner table comic book. As the comet has become extremely popular, at one point the company purchased a license for a D&D first edition and released packmaster which was essentially first edition with a ton of Goofy and satirical elements added by the comic book. Eventually they lost the license and second edition of hackmaster is an original product. But the first edition has a ton of books and a lot of love and care was put into the books. The cover art was done to be parodies of The Originals, the books were written with the same kind of serious tone that gygax had, and everything was treated in universe. I've never been able to play the game but it's an excellent example of gain products that I Delight in Reading

QB mentions in one of the other comments on this vid that he's familiar with Tom Jolly and "4th ed" Hackmaster (which was the first edition, of course) so he's definitely aware of it and it's history. Pretty much impossible to have missed at least hearing about it if you were roleplaying with D&D in in the 90s and early 2000s when KoDT was at its peak and showing up in Dragon. Heck, if wasn't for that botched Dragon archive WotC did in '99 there probably wouldn't *be* a Hackmaster.

I always wondered where the Beagle came from, since it doesn't really fit that well into Spelljammer continuity. But there is three theories, one of which is canon but found in a terrible book, one of which is by Mr Welch and could be believable, and one of which is mine. Canon: According to Wrath of the Immortals (an absolutely awful box set) the Beagle came from an different dimension, supposedly outside of the Multiverse. Welch-Canon: The Beagle, and the Galactic Federation it's a part of, come from thousands of different crystal spheres, but they don't know of the existence of said spheres, and use Battlestar Galactica instant hop technology from sphere to sphere. My canon: Mystara's space (or Knownspace as I like to call it) is larger than most crystal spheres, and has more in its void than the others. I actually think the WotI explanation is a good one, even if the box set causes my eyes to shrivel up into little husks of themselves.
@captcorajus
@captcorajus 3 жыл бұрын
Well, this Beagle pre-dates Spelljammer, and so that is a ret-con dating back to when Mystara was converted to AD&D 2E,. The Wrath of the Immortals is also a ret-con (yes, it sucks... lol). Going with the ORIGINAL background, the Beagle is just from another area of the galaxy, though FAR FAR AWAY, as the ship went though some type of spatial anomaly. So really, you just have to pick what Ret-con you want or stick with the original. :)

In fairness to the map size issue you bring up, I'm wondering if you've only got access to the digital version from DriveThruRPG? The original print version offers this up as a full-sized, fold-out poster map which is considerably larger than the single-page map devoted to the ambush segment. It looks like the digital conversion process wasn't the kindest to this module, and that's unfortunate, since asking someone to throw down $60+ just to get the poster map is absurd. :)

Think if I were going to run this (which I'm not) I'd ditch the entire "explore the Beagle" section as written and replace it with a campaign arc using one of the various editions of Metamorphosis Alpha with the Warden renamed to Beagle and unceremoniously crash-landed and mostly buried. There are much better maps (several contradictory versions, even) for Warden, and the thing is so huge and its population so varied it'll keep players busy for years before they need to wrap up the DA plotline - and that's assuming they stick to the "main quest line" and don't wind up going native inside the wreck or something.

@@captcorajus Well, if you're going to use a giant partly-derelict starship in your adventure, Metamorphosis Alpha kind of already did the work for you, y'know? I think I liked the Amazing Engine version of the setting best but that's just me - and it would be a little tricky to keep the alien ship they stuck to the side of the AE Warden in the "crashed and part buried" scenario idea, but not impossible. Metamorphosis is an underrated classic IMO - everyone knows Gamma World but its older cousin doesn't get the same kind of love.

That might be the lowest score I've seen you give. I have that module sitting on my shelf.. I guess it is probably going to stay there.

Its a 'mockup' of the Beagle and its crew. It doesn't go to anything. Its from the Vaults of Pandius.

so, if this module catastophically fails to live up to its potential, why does it get such a high rating?

I gave it a 9 on style. That's pretty low. The overall rating is 14, which is 'above average' and I think I explained each point in detail.

Now I did warn you! If anything the DA modules capture TSR deep in its mid-80's meltdown. Excellent cover art but a jumbled mess between the covers.

Yep. The DA series was arranged by Gygax after the Bloom's ran things into the ground, as part of the TSR attempt to bring in ready cash. You get the B1-9 compilation, In Search of the Unknown, and the AD&D Mega Modules, "Queen of the Demonweb Pits", "Scourge of the Slavelords", and "The Temple of Elemental Evil", all of which worked to increase sales. Gygax saved TSR, and then they fired him. Crazy.

@@captcorajus Understatement. This *is* the same guy who priced Fairy Meat at $24.88 to make up for the 12 pennies buyers would need to provide to base the cardboard standups it came with.

You pronouncement of hectare is wrong. It is not "hec tar" but "hect air". It is a metric measurement of land size. The imperial equivalent is acre. 1 hectare = 2.5 acres. As for the module, you are pretty much correct on the entire series so far. I never found any of these to be very good modules. The module names and the cover art is almost a bait-and-switch; Looks great on the outside but not very great on the inside.

The pronunciation is fine. I know what a hectare is. The bait and switch aspect of the series is pretty spot on.

Like an idiot I bought this thing for the cover and the promise of fantasy characters trying to navigate their way around a high tech city with all kinds of intrigue technology and what not. But this thing did not deliver. I read through it, and wondered why the ship wasn't mapped out, and why the story chose to go with a ship and not a portal that led to a city like the one on the cover. HIGHLY DISAPPOINTING. I still have my old copy hanging around somewhere, and bought the PDF just to have, but like so many OTHER games from the era, the module DID NOT deliver on the cover. Major thumbs down, and again I think you're being way too generous.
