(8 Sep 1975) 7536/A: GREECE: A YEAR AFTER THE COLONELS
In 1974, the military junta in Athens collapsed and
democratic civilian government returned to Greece.
Last month, the junta leaders were convicted of
treason and given sentences ranging from five years
to death (later commuted to life imprisonment).
Between those two events was a year in which Greece
adjusted to its new-found freedoms. This report looks
at the important events in that year and assesses the
political and economic prospects for Greece now.

That trial was a disgrace. But how to judge an undogmatic Government, which did only the best for the country? Karamanlís was a scandalous figure that quite "spontaneously" cleared off to France after the Military took over in 1967. Karamanlís had pulled the strings in the 1963 murder of leftwing politician and youth leader Lambrakis (as remembered in the movie "Z"), which shook the whole country and triggered a general strike. His right wing extremist (!) murderers were caught and brought to justice only by the Papadopoulos Government in 1968. Even more disgraceful and scandalous however is the fact that Colonel and Domestic Secretary Pattakos' highly educated and well-written analysis on the Military Government coming to power " Ἡ 21η Ἀπριλίου 1967. Διὰ τί ; Ποῖοι ; Πῶς ; - Ἀθῆναι 1992 '' ("The 21st of April 1967. Cause, Players, Performance - Athens 1992", written in jail) seems doomed never to be dignified with a translation into any foreign language, although it ranks among the very best accounts ever of the Military Government in Greece.
