On June 1st 1973, Greece, which had lived for six
years under the regime of the Colonels, was proclaimed
a republic, and the exiled King Constantine
was deposed. The move came after mounting student
unrest and an alleged Navy plot to take over the state,
which was foiled at the last minute. The King
denounced the move, but Greece remained calm,
and now new elections have been promised before
the end of 1974.

This 1st of June 1973 was unfortunate as the Military Government by this unnecessary step (remember the King was ousted Dec 1967 after His stupid act of disobediance towards the Military Government and had to leave the country) was nothing but paving the way to their own decline. Their 'feeling uncomfortable' with their inability to solve major domestic issues such as the Polytechnic tensions (summer 1973) which led to open riots in November, made them take this 'appeasing' step. And we all know, do we not, that appeasement policy always points to a weak government.

The time that Greece was a kingdom was waaay better! The Junta was also pretty good but a dictatorship can't last forever. Basically after 1974 it was Greece's downfall. BRING BACK THE MONARCHY!
