During this video, I take you thru many of the different LP Smartside siding installation tips and tricks I have learned over the years. I was contracted by LP Smartside to install this expert finish for the purpose of creating installation content for their own use, which allowed me the perfect opportunity to share it with you as well.
I am installing their new Smartside Expert Finish in this video, which is similar to what I installed on my own house in a previous series. As both a homeowner and contractor, the best part of using LP Expert Finish, is the finished look as soon as it is installed!
LP Smartside did sponsor this video which covered my time and trip to Texas. Very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with a company that makes such a great product. If you would like to learn more about LP Smartside Expert Finish, check out the link below.

This is a good book. Does provide a step by step introduction to how to build things kzfaq.infoUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 , also does offer some steps. Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.

I am always very impressed with your attention to detail and craftsmanship. But I have to say the 3/16'' gaps are terrible. I know that is LP's specs but I would not put it on anything that I build. I have done a tour at their plant in North Carolina and was not sold on using it. I think their siding looks way better than Hardie for sure, but that's it. They should of had a better quality of flashing for you to use. That thin gauge galvanize is at the bottom of the flashing category. IMO Stainless, aluminum, painted metal or copper is the only way to go. We always shorten the reveal on the first piece of lap siding by 3/8'' this makes up for the lack of the shadow line on the first piece. You really notice it on 6'' or greater reveals. FINISH NAILS on the trim !!!!! Build us some more post frames you do an awesome job on them.

I have seen in person what happens if you DONT gap smart side. Walls with direct sun will be fucked if you dont. The planks will expand and the joints buckle if no gap is left.

For those reason I will use Vinyl siding but I am curious on the Price cost on the LP siding. Not everyone has that $250sqft budget. I know it cost more but by how much? 20%, 50%, 200%?

You would think LP would sell a corner piece that butts up to the wall so it keeps you long runs at the exact spacing. It could also have a quad finishing piece that clips onto the top then you only have to carry one of those gauge sticks to keep the correct spacing in centre joins it could also have build in weep holes for drainage.....

The special screws are made for the PVC : It's very pro . and ya get the rubber mallet hole fillers, nice and if you can get them in correctly it's covered with warranty. PVC and screws both. No Staples. and if you sink your screw below the surface . Which thats what you want anyways. All you do is insert a rubber hole filler.

I don't understand how a gap between two pieces of siding will acclimate and close up if there is a nail at the end of each board which, I believe, would keep the two boards from stretching to fill in that gap. Please explain.
@douglaspollock102
@douglaspollock102 4 жыл бұрын
Rob J most of the movement will be within the frame structure of the building itself, especially if it’s stick frame. The CSB siding doesn’t expand and contract as much as the wood frame. So, when I read your comment, “ ...keep the two boards from stretching to fill in that gap.” I believe you are making a logical comment but may have not considered the movement of the underlying structure.

Birds can be a problem in Texas. Some well lit places can become like an Alfred Hitchcock movie set at night. To combat it, some people use propane cannons to drive those large flocks away. Texas has loads of grackles, crows, ravens, buzzards, swifts and hundreds of other birds from all over all getting preped for Spring. So, anywhere there are masses of prey, so are predators and varmints. One of many issues of a mild climate.

Don't like the 3/16 gaps. Caulking should be a last resort. LP needs to engineer something with lower expansion qualities.

Can u help me out. I'm going to do some siding and some of the videos say its a must to do a rainguard, but I notice that you are not. Does it very by the type of siding? The location? or what? Thanks

I kid you not you are the first person I've seen on KZfaq that can actually caulk. Can't say I'd use the product over Hardie though. I built a dog house out of smart wood corners and hardie siding and purposely ran the material into the ground 8 years ago. Smart wood layers are separating and paint is flaking...Hardie looks brand new. 20 years down the line when your paint is flaking because of expansion and contraction you will be kicking yourself.

@@RRBuildings I understand. Overall, I wish there was a better solution than caulk.

John Harding looks sharp but my markings are all but gone in underside of the tape after few months of use. Top side suffering fade where using the most 6”-8’ but not as bad. If using regularly/daily I’d recommend steering clear.

Zach Simpson Your absolutely correct. The coating on the blade is poorly made and it will wear down quickly especially on the edge of the blade making it useless to read .
