I just joined my local volunteer department. My chief said he is going to teach me how to work the truck on calls. Thanks for the video, I'll use it as a study guide.

Turn the water on and off slowly boys, you can create water hammer and blow the main. Then you have no water.

Don't forget to open the air bleed on the inlet port on the engine. This will bleed the line of air as you charge the line, so you don't cavate the pump. 32 years as a firefighter/driver.

that hydrant in the video opens counter-clockwise but the hydrants in New York open clock-wise

Why isn’t the hydrant bag in the same spot as the 5” hose? That would make sense.

Cool you did it the good way cause I just saw one who was opening too fast, could damage the water line by hammering it, pipe burst is not really usefull.

What was the, "butt valve" on the side installed for?
@curtislidstrom7386
@curtislidstrom7386 2 жыл бұрын
It allows incoming engines to hook up to the hydrant and get water without first turning off the hydrant. It has a plate that stops incoming water but can be opened with a handle on the side.

Once a hydrant is fully opened you need to close it 1/8 of a turn to relieve the stress on the mechanisms

Thank you for the input. We will mention this in the revison.

If you really want to get technical, and do it the right way, the "butt valve" (or gate valve as i call it) should always be installed before opening the hydrant. Once its on, you want to open the firehydrant very slowly (to prevent water hammers) and let the air out through the "gate valve". When the hydrant starts to flow you can close the "gate valve" and proceed to fully open the hydrant and then do your Flush.
@RRFRTraining
@RRFRTraining 5 жыл бұрын
Well I do not see any advantage to this. Either way you are letting the air out with the butt valve or gate valve on or not. Before or after the flush has no effect on the operation.

If you flush the hydrant when its partially open you erode the soil around the hydrant.
@RRFRTraining
@RRFRTraining 5 жыл бұрын
If you operate the hydrant when it's partially open you will erode the soil around the hydrant. I have never seen anyone fully open the hydrant to flush the hydrant. Also simply applying the butt valve (gate valve) will not assist with this issue. The idea behind flushing the hydrant is mainly to make sure there is not debris in the hydrant, any air in the hydrant will be expelled within seconds. If you are implying that we should leave the caps on, apply the butt valve (gate valve), fully open the hydrant, flush using the gate valve then completely shut the hydrant and then hook our LDH you are wasting precious time and I believe that remedial training should be obtained. If I am misunderstanding your comment / operational procedure for tagging a hydrant please let me know but from what I gather by your comments you are complicating a very simple process.

I've always wondered why the hydrant main hose is aimed into the street (where stupid drivers park illegally) rather than parallel to the street so the main line can turn between two cars? I know it would need to be a little longer, but it assures the line can aways go between or over cars.

Also keep in mind when that 5" is charged it mine as well be a filled with concrete. The loop you would have to make would waste so much time. Like everyone said bust out the windows, or if need be push the car out of the way with another vehicle

Meanwhile in the 2 minutes it took to connect the house was a total loss! Also why not put the hydrant wrench bag with the pony roll? Rather than run to the rear of the truck?
@caseydavis9698
@caseydavis9698 3 жыл бұрын
While i understand that speed is a necessity, if a house is gone in 2 minutes because of someone connecting a hydrant, the house was gone anyway. Also the engineer can use tank water while the hydrant is being connected and use hydrant water to refill the tank once it is connected. Just my input, thanks

It’s not usually that slow, usually they have more people on the scene obv, and they rush it. This video does happen to be a tutorial video, meaning it has to be slow.

You must ensure pressurized water. That fireman did not check for "pressure". That could very well be a "dead hydrant.". You must ensure pressure. This is embarrassing.
