I really love the Kia EV6 - let me make this clear! However in filming my review after nearly 1,000 miles I have to be honest about a few issues I'm experiencing. I think they'll be resolved by Kia no problem but it would be fake of me to ignore..
So here it is - my review of the EV6 with the great, the good and the bad...

A lot of your complaints, like the auto tailgate and the beeeeeeeep are due to long-time Kia things. The beeeeeeep meant that you had the key fob (or the second key fob) inside the vehicle when you got out and opened the trunk. Kia has done that for decades. The auto-trunk open is also a long time Kia feature. If you just keep walking, it won’t open. You have to be detected by the back for 3 seconds before it activates. All of this is detailed in the manual. I don’t discount that it’s odd if you don’t know about it, but it seems that a lot of the quizzical items are easy to understand if you had read the manual. Still, thanks for bringing them up. I think the criticism is valid and needed. As a 5 time Kia owner, these things don’t bug me but I can understand how they could be obnoxious.

The reason it has 3 levels for auto climate is simple. Sometimes, putting auto in its full make fan blow too strong and some people hate it due to the noise and strong air stream. So putting auto in its lowest setting, it will slowly get to desired temperature, but with less noise and not so strong wind.

Agree with this. In my current vehicle if I put it in auto the fans will ramp up to the point it’s overwhelming amount of wind and noise. Because of that I keep it in manual mode and adjust the fan speed myself.

It also uses a lot more battery if it's on 3rd level. If I'm going for a 5-10 minute drive in 100 degree weather, I don't need my internal temperatures dropped down immediately all the way down to 60

Great video. We have ordered an EV6 and it arrived at Immingham port about a week ago. We are currently waiting while Kia inspects all of the cars that rolled off the vehicle carrier to check them all for the heater issue so that they can fix them. Apparently it doesn’t affect all cars but they are checking them all anyway.

Thanks, a very fair and accurate review, I have the identical model even the same colour. I have had no software bugs yet, but they will be resolved. Yes the roofline would be a challenge over 6 ft tall. You can fit the charge cable, or the granny in the front compartment, but it is a bit small, however most cars do not even have this space. Range for me is about 230-240 in December. The bag with the V2L is now safely stored in my garage, I will use it, but take it with me when planned.Storm Arwen it would have been a blessing. Thanks again, fair review, and for me ,it is the best car I have ever owned, and, I have owned Jags, Range Rovers etc.

I got my EV6 in the end of January and no of those issues has been fixed (and I have many more). While having serious discussions with KIA I am feeling like a beta-tester and I don't think this is as cool as many others think that driving EV's implicate updates all the time. No, I am sorry but there are so many issues that I - right now at least - wouldn't lease any more KIA after my contract is finished in 3 years. I am sincerely disappointed and quite chocked about all the functional issues.

Don’t feel bad calling out the issues, we need more videos like this so buyers are aware and as fully informed as possible before parting with the vast sums of money required to buy an EV. Our Ioniq (not a 5), is currently at the dealer as it has struggled to keep the 12v battery charged up during the 1st few slightly cold days we’ve had this winter. Bearing in mind it’s a car that’s been around for a while, there appears to still be some teething issues that need ironing out on EVs regardless of wether they are new to the market or established. It’s frustrating, but I’m happy I’m making the switch now.

Every new EV in the market has some teething issues and every driver can point out few on each model and the EV6 is not an exception. I have been driving my EV6 GT Line S RWD last two weeks. This does not have the heat pump. I did not experience any issue with temperature control, start/stop, locking and unlocking. I disabled smart tailgate opening. I drove mostly in eco mode in the town and normal on A roads and motor ways. Few times I tempted the sport mode just for fun. The average economy is modest at 3.4 miles/kWh. Last weekend I drove just in Eco mode around London area and part of M3 about 76 miles. The economy was over 4 miles/kWh in that trip. I always kept regen in Auto mode. The seats are comfy. I expanded the boot space by removing the upper deck cover. The reviewer pointed the charge port flap extends out. This is an annoying design but most EVs have similar issue. An ID.4 owner reported that the flap broke and costed him 400 euro to replace. I hope there will be smarter design in future like sliding door. I have not used any public charger yet. I am using off-peak home charging costing 5p/kWh. So far I am happy with my EV6.
@harvey66616
@harvey66616 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed they should fix the flap design. I don't think they'd even need a sliding door, though that would be cool. The main thing is just that the attach point (the hinge) is too small, and being vertical means a lot of force can accidentally be applied (e.g. if someone walks by and catches their clothing, bag, whatever on the door). I think they could fix the hinge size issue just by hinging on the other side, since the door itself is roughly triangular. Even better, they could hinge on the top instead. That would allow for an even larger, stronger hinge, but also would be in a position where accidentally applied forces are much less likely to be a direction and of a magnitude that would damage the door.

6 foot one and no issue. I have the rear wheel drive GT Line an love it. The twin motor has a disconnect on the front motor, brilliant idea to improve efficiency but I tend to drive in economy on the motorway so in the real world saved thousands of pounds and the rear wheel drive is quick enough at 7 seconds. The extra space in the front gives you the home for the cables. If you do not press the brake switching it on then you can't get it into gear, took me 10 mins to work this out and you have switch off and start again. Range around town October 340 mile range equivalent but motorway with heaters on your are 240miles. Lane assist I agree. One thing you missed and the only thing that annoys me is the windscreen wipers, the bonnet restricts them being lifted when scraping ice off the windscreen.

EDIT: 18/12/21 - A very fair assessment. My RWD GT Line S HP has a bigger frunk/froot so the trickle charge bag fits in there nicely. I haven’t had any issues with the heating on mine, I like it cold though and got used to just using the heated seat and steering wheel in my Niro for keeping warn. I do have the issue with the key not being recognised and the car alarm going off when the boot is open and also the gears not selecting. No issues with the auto unlocking features though, if you read the manual you can see where the detection zones are and I think you can turn off the automatic boot opening option. Tesla destination chargers definitely don’t work with the EV6. Newer "white flag" Tesla destination chargers have been rumoured to work though and the KIA charge app/RFID card works with most public chargers. The lane keeping assist isn’t always active on my EV6. It’s definitely active when using the adaptive cruise control but can be turned off and on via the steering wheel buttons. Not having wireless Android auto / Apple car play and not having widescreen support is a massive let down in a £50k+ 2021 vehicle. Hopefully, the widescreen issue will be fixed with software updates but, KIA have already confirmed it will never have wireless android auto / car play. I have an AAWireless dongle fir wireless Android auto. I have an issue with the drivers side heated mirror not working on my EV6. I can't see anything out of it so that's got to go back to the garage. The lack of a rear windscreen wiper was a really bad choice. Yes, the aerodynamics clears the glass above 50Mph but, in the city, where you need it the most I can't see anything. And the camera position isn't great as it gets dirty so you really have no way of seeing what's behind you. The least KIA could do is to have installed some kind of water repellent technology in the glass of provided us with a lifetime supply of RainX or something.

@William Hancock - I'd be very interested in your real world comparison of the Niro and EV6, currently weighing up the head decision of an e-Niro (4+) to the heart (and wallet emptying) decision of an EV6 (GT Line). How do they compare?
@YorkshireHillbilly
@YorkshireHillbilly 2 жыл бұрын
@@bobbobman767 My Niro 4 hybrid was always going to be a steppingstone to a KIA full electric, be it another Niro or newer model. My experience of the Niro 4 hybrid was that it was very capable and had a lovely interior however, living in Sheffield, UK (the most geographically diverse city in England) it was difficult to achieve any significant reduction in fuel consumption. I wouldn't recommend a hybrid to anyone living in Sheffield due to the torque required to propel the vehicle up the many hills. A PHEV would perhaps be capable of propelling the vehicle up the hills but, my Niro hybrid would call for combustion engine power at the slightest incline. The lane keeping assist and adaptive cruise control worked a treat and the infotainment system was adequate, if lagging a little behind in terms of map updates, which could only be done at the dealership as apposed to the EV6 which can be done via a USB stick. In its current format I wouldn't want another Niro however, the newer My2021 e-Niro 4+ looks to have improvements in the infotainment, connectivity (UVO Connect), Active Safety & Driving Dynamics. It now has Lane Follow Assist instead of the old Land Keep Assist and looks to have a new instrument cluster and 10.25" touchscreen. If money's not a problem I'd say the EV6 is a no brainer but, if money is a factor then the My2021 e-Niro 4+ looks looks like a solid choice.

Enjoyed the heck out of my test drive of the EV6 Wind as they call the mid trim level in the USA. Favorite feature is having both drive modes and regen adjustment on the steering wheel. I didn't get to try the auto regen which engages stronger regen when braking for a car in front but I was just clicking up a level or two manually when I wanted to slow down kind of like downshifting but works better - brilliant to put it there. And drive mode so easy to change and sport mode makes this thing so responsive and fun and yes its quick and then you can put it back to conserve energy without even looking. I like this car and plan on buying one and I am a Rivian EV pickup owner at the moment.

With Auto Climate 1, 2 and 3 you choose how fast the fan is allowed to go (intervals), which is fine in an electric car where everything takes a hit on the range. Actually I could choose that too in my diesel car (noise), but only in the software. This is better. The alarms are probably because you step out of the car with the key on you while it’s running/on - so turn off the car or leave the key in the car or ignore it. And yes the heating issue has been fixed in an update. I only had the problem once though, but anyway great it’s fixed. The automatic tailgait opening by itself when you get near it and stay close for more than 3 seconds with your key in your pocket can be turned off in the software, if you don’t like it. 11:49 - If this happens and you can’t change gear then push the start button WITHOUT stepping on the brake - wait a few seconds - then step on the brake and push the start button again and now you can change gear and drive. It’s a feature that let’s you have the heater on and more plus you can turn off the lights without having the car fully on (nice when charging during the winter). It’s between “On” and “Accessory Mode”. I agree with the charging gate being very vulnerable. You need to have a look in the manual m8 :). I know all this just by having the car for one week. But yes - the car is pretty advanced and there’s a lot to learn, but personally I love that. Nearly everything can be personalized.

Really useful review, way more help than the all the rest out there. When I did my test drive I also found it bizarre that you can code your seat position to your key but if you change the lane assist and other settings you need to do this manually every time. Particularly strange given one of the features they highlight is the vast amount of customisation you can do in the settings screens. and initially that looks great until you realise you have to go through the entire process every time you jump in the car. And very much looking forward to delivery of mine but as you point out for a car at this price point it would be nice to have a few of these niggles ironed out.

Great review. I've ordered a GT Line in Red (the default colour that doesn't cost extra in Denmark). I am 6 ft 4 and have found that I can just about find a comfortable adjustment of the seat in the model with sunroof, which regretfully is bundled with headup display in our market (when ordering the GT-Line). We can order the sunroof option without the headup display, not the other way around - seems daft to me. But fair so say I can't have wear my pony tail in Gareth Bale style 😂 I'm not 100% sure, but I think the 'walk by/automatic opening the boot' can be switched off - the idea is that you can approach the back of the car with all your groceries and leave the key in the pocket. I've seen the heating system error reported by other reviewer and consulted my dealer, who confirmed Kia was aware - and I think there was a text in the video stating that a software update has since fixed the issue?

I found that the door handles pop out the wrong way. Your hand falls off when opening the door as compared to the Model 3 handle where it doesn’t. The auto presenting handles does make it easier for new users to work out how to get in though. The heated seat controls are far too easy to accidentally turn on, and the phone charger isn’t much use as you have to use a cable to get apple car play/android auto.

I used summon on my test drive - something to do with having to double press the lock (or unlock) button to prime it first? Fair review - quite a few of the niggles have either been resolved or are being resolved by updates so I am sure by the time I get mine in March or so (exact same model and colour) things will be smoothed out. Unfortunately as with any electronic items these days, early adopters are basically beta testers and cars are no exception. I don't mind the display graphics - yes they could be a little nicer but they are decent and once the novelty wears off they will be fine.

Thanks for a great video. I agree it is excellent car. I have the exact same car (in Sweden) and I can confirm most of your worries. Another thing that I think can affect the heating system is the winter mode. The car will prioritise heating the batteries and that will lead to less heat inside the car. Winter mode should only be used in low temperatures when planning to charge DC. In temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius you will still experience “cold lagging” before the charging speed increase. OTA shall be possible but I think the software is not activated yet.

It's interesting how similar this is to my Niro EV 4. Some of the niggles you mentioned can be switch off (i.e. auto boot opening, audio on startup, etc;.) The Lane Assist is very annoying, I'm 100% with you on this, why can't I switch it off once and that's it, I actually think it's quite dangerous on country roads as it wants to steer the car when I don't want it to, not great and it can not be switched off from the menu - why??? Anyway, just about everything you showed I have on my Niro, which is taller and more space (why I chose that over an EV6). You didn't mentioned the annoying aircon/audio switch button array, another very annoying design. Only downside is the disappointing charge speed, but I need fast charge once a month so not major issue for me.
@markwilson8465

Very fair- at 6' 7" I can absolutely confirm not ideal for taller people. While I managed to find an ok driving position and just about clear the sunroof, there is nowhere near enough adjustment in the wheel and I ended up obscuring the top corners of the display. The loaner I had also had the hvac blows cold air issue and could not be reset. So not for me - the 216 mile cold weather range i achieved was disappointing

Had the same erratic door locking/unlocking and random alarms on my Hyundai Ioniq5. The car went back into Service and they said they couldn't find anything wrong, even though I was tracking the alarms on my phone during the week they had it! After a lot hassle I formally rejected the car and received a refund. Since the Ioniq5 and the EV6 are built on the same platform I'm wondering if there is an inherent fault in the system. Anyway, just had two test drives of the Tesla M3, very impressive. Such a delight to drive, but I'm weighing that against the practicality of the hatchback.

We still don't have these in the U.S. sadly. Kia fell behind anticipated delivery start date. I really like this Yacht Blue color. I've recently been a red car convert so all of my cars have to be RED but I kind of think that, other than maybe Aurora Black Pearl, the EV6 wears this paint better than all of the other options based on what I've seen in reviews so far! A possible solution to the charger door issue: Why not allow the door to flap around to be wrapped with a magnet on the inside that allows it to adhere to the fender on the side by the rear door area. Would certainly prevent an obvious future repair bill.

Nice honest review. I live in Quebec, Canada, and when looking at those outside door handles, and that charging port door, I couldn't help but think what a nightmare those will be in winter, with ice buildup. I've got a Kia Stinger GT Limited (for now), and the retracting side mirrors when shutting down the car can be turned off in the wintertime, in order not to damage the motors or mechanism if ice and snow are present on them. But the door handles on this car will probably jam up at some point... And I agree with you that, when in the opened position, they're hooks waiting to be broken or to tear your coat pockets away... Anyway, thanks for sharing.

I live in Sweden (not that far north though so pretty normal winter climate nothing extreme) and there have been days where I couldn't open my damn KIA because they are frozen!! Thanks for this great review RS! I look forward to seeing further 'niggles' reviews about this EV, which I'm very interested in getting. I totally agree with the charge port door, that's definitely a weak point. Agree with the lack of helpful illumination on the exterior. Those rear wing lights, what's the point of those? My £36K Peugeot E2008 GT has lights under the door mirrors which are fantastic at lighting up the ground below. It also has those front lights that light up when you turn left or right, so bloody useful, but this car doesn't! I'm almost talking myself out of buying one now, as more than likely EV6 2.0 will have all these features just after you splash out on EV6 1.0 😪

Yeah but that's a bit of a sledgehammer isnt it? Personally I like being able to open the tailgate on my XC90 by waggling a foot under the bumper - works every time and perfect for those occasions when you're hands are full (photo gear normally for me). So the facility is always available but only activates when I choose - surely Kia can come upwith a similar solution rather than it always happening or never happening?
