Around 1700 years ago, Corinium - modern day Cirencester - was the second most important city in Roman Britain after Londinium. It was a bustling, wealthy city - built along the important Roman highway of Ermine Street - and was complete with basilica, forum, shops, high-status housing and all the other attributes of a thriving provincial capital.
Time Team was drawn to Cirencester by the opportunity to excavate in the gardens of a number of properties in Chester Street, which lies close to the line of Ermine Street and near to the centre of old Corinium.
The Team also examined evidence for the existence of another Roman road bisecting Ermine Street, using geophysics surveys to try to determine its exact location. As a result of the investigation, a number of new pieces could be put into place in the archaeologists' jigsaw map of old Corinium.

I adore Victor! He was so soft-spoken that he didn't really stand out in a crowd...until you saw his work! He was INCREDIBLY talented, a talent constantly toned down by his laid-back, easy-going approach. But his talent screamed no matter how quiet he seemed to be.

You have to remember that the purpose of scheduling of an ancient monument is to preserve it, complete with context, for future generations. Every time a dig is undertaken, the archeological context is destroyed (hence the careful recording). Overlaying a surface use (like a park or crazy golf course) on a surface a metre higher than the monument doesn't destroy anything...in Cirencester in particular, if you didn't use the surface you'd have very little there at all!

Cirencester is still a magic place when the autumn rains are falling hard, the streets are empty and its ancient Inns inviting. I 'discovered' Cirencester in 1969 and visited the excavation of a 'giant' (> 7 foot tall skeleton) in the Abbey church.

not even vaguely true. Coins and precious metal is declared treasure trove over a certain amount (3 or more coins) otherwise you can keep small finds if they are on your land. Even with big finds you will be paid the value (or a good proportion of the value) of the find. And under no circumstances can your garden be appropriated as a permanent archaeological site. Darren Bianco Your name , and the fact that you called your garden a 'yard' suggests you're american. If you find a hoard of Roman coins buried in your garden in America you'll become famous !

@Darren: British people are encouraged to hand over the findings they discover in Britain via the Treasure Act of 1996. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treasure_Act_1996. Essentially the findings if valued by a historical/archeological/educational institution are allowed to bid for the findings and the discoverer is paid for the find in cash. This can be incredibly lucrative - the discoverer of the Staffordshire Hoard is now a multimillionaire.

@TheSpikehere 8 жыл бұрын
+NoYouAreNotDreaming Yes, she got a bottle of US Budweiser and the guys got their Champagne. These videos are slightly shorter than the original broadcast. Due to the differing lengths in advert breaks between Channel 4 and Discovery. You'll also notice in later series that Channel 4 themselves shifted from 2 ad breaks per hour long show to 3 ad breaks. In effect cutting the programme from 50 minutes to 45 roughly.

Question. Why THREE days? Dramatic effect? I've only recently started watching these great shows. Is there a law of some sort that allows no more than 3 days? (I'm American.) They discover a Bronze Age barrow, a Roman villa, a medieval monastery; then pack up and leave???? I don't get it!

The premise of the show was set up to be 3 days because the people doing the digs and the experts all have regular jobs and do this on the weekends. Mick and the others wanted to find a way to show live archaeology on TV since all there was previously were dry documentaries showing already dug ruins and history lectures that the general public had no interest in. Some archaeology in general is only exploratory, meant to establish what's under the dirt, the age, how deep it's buried and if it's at risk from plowing or development. This is what time team is showing us. After they do the digs and write up their very professional and extensive reports it is up to local and national museums, universities, etc. to decide whether or not to follow through. A great example of follow-up archaeology is the St. Mary's cathedral dig and the much longer follow up dig done by archaeologists after. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rLylpNqrzLW5op8.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bZqTf6WjvNa1h6s.html

cost. The show was eventually scrapped because the budget for each episode was so high. They have to hire machinery, have a bunch of professionals and tidy up afterwards, as well as all the film crew and production.

@@kc3718 no, it was canceled *after 20 years* because Dr. Aston got so frustrated with the Channel 4 producers that he quit. They did their best for Series 20, but without Mick and Stewart, they couldn’t keep it going.

I wouldn't assume that. Mick was very active in engaging with the public at digs. They may gave gotten it on film, but just not had time to include it. The fact that they included shots of her is proof that they were aware of her.
