Well, for the younger narrator, ``irreparable'' is pronounced ``irREParable,'' rather than, ``irrePAIRable.'' And even Losh mispronounced ``intimated.'' He pronounced it ``intimidated,'' but one could tell from the context that he meant that when he said, ``he intimated that his case was at an end.''

What a shock it was when the women reader came on after the perfectly modulated voice of the man who was reading before. Damn! I’m struggling to finish this section while she screeches and mispronounces words and stutters along. I’m hoping the man will return like he did previously. Good Lord this is painful

Why does the woman reader come in . It has ruined it and I cannot finish- unbelievable. Has it been hacked- cannot understand why this has occurred

@@leebelcher3798 This is a Librivox audiobook. The readers are volunteers and one book can be recorded by multiple people. Sometimes we are lucky and a professional reader volunteers like Lars Rolander (the male voice). He was Swedish (died in 2016).

Lars Rolander was a wonderful actor. I love his voice. He sounds like my grandfather. I wish Hollywood would realise this is what a Swedish accent sounds like.

As soon as I heard him introducing the book, I told my husband that he sounded like my Farfar (Swedish). It's fun to know I'm not the only one:)

I like the way the authors develop the characters as the story evolves. A nice technique and skill. Wonder what their relationship was. Mr. Rees died the year that I was born. For some reason I noticed that. Enjoying. Will write more later

I'm greatfull to all readers for I know they did it for free for Librivox but it is great when a professional does the job. Lars Rolander has a wonderful voice and rythm.

I appreciate this upload. I truly love the older books. They are just about Impossible to get here in USA. Many bookstores have been closed. There are very few stage plays; certainly nothing as abundant as in England. Without the generosity of these readers, this book would be Lost to Americans. THANK YOU!

I think fate or the cosmos is playing a trick on us in that John R. Watson an Australian author of this mystery has a name close to John H. Watson of Sherlock Holmes' fame.

Damn ! All was going well til ???? I had to recheck the title to make sure I hadn't switched. Sticking a jet reader in there really freaked me out. Talk about speed reading woman ! She deserves a badge for the speed, but for nothing else.

That Nordic accent was lovely but rather faint-and the voice pleasing and musical. The American lady got a bit shrill and mispronounced some words-I would have preferred the first reader for the whole book.

Great narration but is it necessary to advise the names of the authors, the narrator and the LibriVox info before every chapter? Very annoying.

Such a shame. A wonderful start but when the soft voice of Lars is replaced by the second reader, I had to give up (audio quality of the recording has not been worked on, diction, pronouncation are awful). Not that Lars' pronouncation was perfect or at all times correct; but it was very very beautiful. I do understand this is created by volunteers, but personally I had to stop and now I wish I had never started the book. My suggestion to listeners: check for just a minute if you can handle the female reader (around the 2:11 mark) If you can - go ahead, it is a great story.

Does nobody check these recordings? American lady keeps pronouncing gaol as ghoul. Drove me crazy, along with her poor, disjointed reading. Enjoyed the story though.

Chapter 9 'read' by a semi-literate (gaol = gool, vagaries = vaggharris....) mad woman ignoring punctuation, line breaks, paragraphs, emphasis. Ruinous, and shame on Librivox.

Was thoroughly enjoying the gentle narration untill the load female voice absolutely murdered it. She'd make a fine town crier but unbearable for the subtleties required for any sensitive book narration

I really like his voice. I always have trouble with female readers as they just don't suit detective stories which generally have male main characters. Sometimes females have nice voices, but they read as if they were reading to first graders.

Yes, it is hard to reconcile the female voice when the detective is male. But some ladies are good. Can't remember her name right now but she is from MN, maybe Dawn.

+Alexa Penn I think it's "Lars Rolander". I live in Norway, so I'm sure it is "Lars", because he says it like they would here. "Rolander" would be a surname more typical for Sweden.

+Fräulein Krause Hi Fräulein - danke shön! i really appreciate your taking the time to let me know - the way he says his name in Norwegian is interesting. i wish people in other countries would pronounce words they sound in the original language. Like we say, "Porsh" ugh - and it's "Porsche" Paris is Paree. Moscow is Moscva. it wouldn't be so hard to do that, i think. I'd love to visit "Norge" someday. thanks again :} alexa (New York City)

Of course the beginning reader is qui e wonderful. When I got over my surprise at the second reader, I gave her a chance and she was pretty good. Unfortunately the third reader read as if she was reading silently to her self and the pace suffered. I could not go on.

Yes, this recording is free, and the readers are volunteers... but if it's worth doing a project, it's worth doing it well. Allowing people who are poor, careless, or unprepared readers to participate detracts from your endeavor, and that's a shame, because they make themselves, and you, and worst of all the books they read, look bad.

The reader has a lovely voice, but I find that beginning and ending every chapter with the book information took me out of the story to a degree that I had to drop it at chapter 3. Bummer.

Having multiple readers is distracting and they get worse as it goes along. I had to give up as the third reader is abysmal, she does not know how to pace, stumbles ridiculously over words as she has obviously done no preparation prior to the read and does not understand how to use volume. Great shame because the story is interesting.

The thing is: the readers are working without any pay. It is not a commercial production, it is a Librivox. You should not complain. You may listen or not, your choice, but complaining is just ridiculous. You are not entitled to a free audiobook, it is a privilege to be able to listen for free. If you don't like it, buy a better version.

@@marinaugo4069 Regardless of whether they are paid or not, they make these recordings to be listened to. They therefore want as many people as possible to listen to them. A poor reading will not encourage listeners.

Jessica Brookes yes, i couldnt get past 15 minutes, I know that they are volunteers, but it's like American Idol.There are people whom no one has told they can't sing. I feel someone should tell some of these people they can't read well. They seem to be of the opinion they read well
