Sorry for the wait on this one. Hope you guys like it. More Eldritch videos to come this month, so make sure to subscribe for those. Next game is a great light Eurogame called The Castles of Mad King Ludwig.
If you want to follow me on Twitter, go to / rtfmshow for RTFM and general gaming related tweets or / sheasayswords for the stupid stuff I say in my free time.

Why are you still reading this? Go play games or something.
Corrections:
At 18:10 I say that you lose the game if all investigators are defeated in the same round. This is incorrect. You lose the game if all investigators are eliminated (i.e. defeated and can't come back), which usually only happens if an investigator is defeated after the Old One awakens.

I'm a complete beginner these types of games, and I grabbed it because it looked cool...and because it offered an option for single player. (solitaire stopped being lonely enough.) I didn't realize how utterly baffling it could be. After spending a ridiculous couple hours trying to decipher the manuals, googleing questions that got me nowhere, forums, other videos I'm ashamed I...couldn't even figure out how to make the first move. Your video and you are a sanity saver (pun?). I'll probably watch it a few more times, but I understand a lot more than what the rest of the Internet could give me. Thank you.

This is definitely the most descriptive and well-managed teaching video of Eldritch Horror I've seen. I've played this game multiple times, both with friends and by myself, and I still make rule mistakes at times. That's where the House rules excuse comes into play.
@RTFM

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. Honestly, while studying the rules to make this video, there were many times when I realized that I had been missing something or getting some things completely wrong, so don't worry about it. As long as you're having fun, with a game like this house rules are A-OK in my book.

I watch ALOT of board game reviews, rules, and other various videos like top 10's and top 100's; you are by far one the best out there. Perfect mix of humor, graphics, and concise and easily understood explanations. Also your follow up videos (TI3) are unlike anything else out there on the Tube. I can only imagine how much work, effort, and pure force of will that this type of content is to produce. I am in TV (only an IT guy), so I kind of know. So in all seriousness, if you keep the cool laidback vibe that you have forged and great quality that you are producing while keeping your content coming at a consistent pace, the viewers WILL come. Really looking forward to see this channel grow and come out with more great vids.

Fantastic video. I usually explain combat encounters before location encounters (since players have to resolve combat before locations) but comprehensive and easy to understand. I love the subtle text commentary/jokes. The only things I'd add are examples of mysteries (so players know what they're working towards), an example final mystery, and briefly show how difficulty scales between player counts. Obviously there's a ton of information you did cover, but I think a minute or two would cover those three topics.
@RTFM
@RTFM 8 жыл бұрын
I totally get what you're saying, and I don't disagree that it would be helpful, but one of the things I think Eldritch Horror does so well is present you with the dangers of the unknown. H.P. Lovecraft's work was all about this kind of thing, and I actually kind of love it when you start a game, it seems like everything is going great, and then you just get completely destroyed. I don't know that I would want to rob people of that experience. Anyway, thank you so much for watching and for the feedback.
@davidko9289
@davidko9289 8 жыл бұрын
Totally agree re: the mystery and suspense. At the same time, the people I teach games to usually like seeing samples, even if it limits the suspense. For example, as soon as a new Battlestar Galactica player (btw, a video on BSG would be great) became admiral, I showed him a random destination card from the middle of the deck. We were a while away from the next jump, but I wanted to make sure he knew what to consider when looking at two destination cards.

Great video. I recently purchased this and have only played one game so far and we won but looking back i think we overlooked the rule about not using multiple items to increase the dice count for test wrong. Also the one about being able to clear a card if you fail at gaining an item from the reserve i know for sure we where not aware of that. Second keep these coming a friend of mine purchased TI3 because your video made it much more approachable although we still have yet to play a game. ;(
@RTFM
@RTFM 8 жыл бұрын
Those are probably two of the most overlooked rules, so don't feel bad about it. Part of the reason I chose this game is because of how easy it is to miss the little things that drastically affect the difficulty of the game. And yeah, a game of TI3 is insanely hard to get going. Glad people are trying though.

I'm a big Lovecraft fan so I really wanna buy this. The problem is that my friends aren't interested in the mythos at all, so I knew I could never get them to commit to something like Arkham Horror that takes several hours and is really complex. This is complex as well but I feel like I could convince them to play this because it doesn't seem much worse than Pandemic which they already play. Thanks RTFM!!!
@RTFM
@RTFM 7 жыл бұрын
Glad I could help! This is definitely a much more accessible game than Arkham, and it does share some qualities with Pandemic (though I'd say it is a touch more complex), so I think you might be right. Great video man! I have just to say: Azathoth is not like Galactus, because he doesn't eat worlds. Azathoth is the center of the universe, he dreams reality. The game ends immediately when he wakes up, because all reality would stop to exist. No need to eat worlds ;)

I'm a veteran of Arkham Horror and have dabbled in the card game, and so I'm hoping that I don't get confused with the differences. Some are glaring (no going to the asylum for treatment if you go nuts, you just lose your character) and some are more subtle, like taking a certain number of actions per turn instead of having phases. Video was a great introduction and I'm hoping i can use it to run my first play through without opening the rule book too many times. Does it take as long as Arkham Horror to complete? Some of those game sessions go long...real long.

Are you gonna follow this up with any expansions? Do you mind talking about the dreamland expansion?
@RTFM

The games I teach are decided by a poll that my Patreon backers vote on and I always try to focus on new games. Unfortunately, as these videos take a long while to produce, I just don't have the time to dedicate a whole video on an expansion. Hopefully in the future I'll be able to, but not at present. Sorry!

Ruin your day? What an understatement. I have never dreaded drawing a card in my life. I feel massive relief when I don't get mind raped by insanity and I feel actual pain when a card decides to be an extra large dick. My friend and I have gone, "Your turn now!" and literally prepared for the worst. F*** this game with Cthulu's tentacles! ... I love it so much.

Im having a hard time understanding the doom and omen tracker. The mythos makes you move the omen track right? And for whatever symbol is matching does the doom track move or is that only on the red circle. This part kills me because im not sure how this mehcanic works.
@RTFM
@RTFM 5 жыл бұрын
Certain mythos cards (the yellow ones with the omen symbol) will have you move the omen tracker clockwise. When you do this, count how many open portals have constellations matching the current one on the omen track, whatever it may be at that time. For each match, advance doom by one.
@markv2997
@markv2997 5 жыл бұрын
RTFM okay that makes sense. So if it lands on the zig zag lookin symbol, for each portal with that symbol the doom track gets moved 1 for each of those right?
@RTFM
@RTFM 5 жыл бұрын
@@markv2997 Correct. And same goes for the other constellations.

What happens if you have 5 influence? Can you reroll dice or should you get more dice or is there a cap? What do you propose to do when you have, fo example, 5 players and everyone gets the Blessed condition? There are only 3 or 4 cards for that. And is it really a rule that you can't improve more than twice the same skill? What if you have other modifiers like allies?
@RTFM
@RTFM 7 жыл бұрын
If you have five influence, any time you make an influence check, you'll roll five dice, plus or minus any modifiers. You can only reroll dice by spending clues or if a card or ability allows you to. Don't worry about five players getting blessed at the same time. This game is not that nice to you. And yes, it is a rule that you can only improve a skill twice, which is why the improvement tokens only have a +1/+2, but adding modifiers from other cards doesn't count as an improvement. It's a little complicated, but at 11:48 in this video I go over it in depth, so rewatch that if you're still having trouble.

Thanks. I asked the first two questions because the game comes with only 4 dice, so I thought that it could be a maximum number of dice you can roll. Also, not that many cards for each status like blessed or cursed. Maybe we should print a few more just in case :D. Also, I bought it and played it once... hence why I'm here, because for a first timer with no veterans, it's not easy to get into, but it is a lot of a fun once you start to get used to it and it's complex enough to keep your head busy.
@RTFM
@RTFM 7 жыл бұрын
Gotcha. Yeah just add a few more dice. The number included isn't a limit. And if you ever get every blessed condition out at the same time, take a picture of it and send it to me, because I won't believe you otherwise. As for the others, I've never had that issue, and one player can't get the same status twice, so I don't think it's at all likely or even possible to run out of cards for a single status. Maybe if you're playing an eight-player game and are exceedingly unlucky, but other than that, probably not. Hopefully that helps. It's a great game, so I'm sure once you wrap your head around it you'll be playing it for a long time.

In the reference book it says that if you get a condition and there's no card for it, you don't get it. I think I read that properly, so my question is answered.

You said that you HAVE to fight the monsters. Isn't that true only if you want to have an encounter on the space? Of you're in action phase you're allowed to travel away from the monsters without anything happening? As I remember this was not possible in Arkham Horror.
@RTFM
@RTFM 7 жыл бұрын
If you end your turn on a space with a monster, then you have to fight it. If you start your turn on a space with a monster, then you can move away from it. And you're right, it was much harder in Arkham.

RTFM It's been a while since we played and then we picked up last week. We became unsure about one more MAJOR thing: spaces. I hope you can help: Investigators on same space. Does it mean physically in the same let's say city - or on any city space? We doubted this when we were to use the Lure of the Gods (I think it was called) that allows you to remove ALL monsters on your space. Seemed overpowered if it means it reaches all over the world. But then again - it's a Lure. Of the Gods.

"Space" refers to a specific location. Basically, if two characters are in Arkham or Tunguska or location #3, etc., then they're on the same space.
