Hi Doug, A new core for Vampire 4 Standalone has been released with very fast RTG up to 1280 x 720 and switches seamlessly to PAL or NTSC. The Apollo guys are doing a fantastic job on its development and it works out at a very good price for an high-end Amiga. Also they are readily available. Regards Chris

@@YesiPleb not sure "Pisses all over the Vampire" is the right way to phrase it. I have used a PiStorm and did a video on it, and the CHIP RAM limitation are an honest and real thing. I do love the PiStorm project for sure, but it is at heart still a hack and in Beta, and there is a fair amount of setup on thee different platforms (Amiga, PC/Mac and Linux on the Pi) just to get things functional. While a vampire is not quite "Plug and Play" it is a whole lot closer than the PiStorm. There is room for both.

The mere existence of RTG, which I am told was not developed by Commodore, is a condemnation of Commodore for stagnation of their architecture after 1985. Clearly AGA was not cutting it, and they just used off the shelf (PC) VGA chips adapted to Zorro. Cool video. I love my ZZ9000's and some day will venture into Mediator w/Radeon or Voodoo cards.
@10MARC
@10MARC 7 ай бұрын
Well... Honestly every type of popular computer like Mac's and PC's had upgradable video by the early 90's. It was fairly commonplace. AGA was still superior in some ways to common VGA solutions, like with its ability to sync with video signals quite easily. I am glad such options were available

Great video again Doug. Interestingly the biggest thing that I missed when parting with the Vampire500 was the RTG. However fortune has smiled upon me in that the MiSTer Amiga Core has gained RTG capability which is amazing. SO I too have been enjoying the delights. Nice detailed video as always! Until recently I was using an HDMI switch with my Vampire and OSSC solution. Then I realized I could set a profile to load for each input on the OSSC and could set it to start scanning through inputs when the signal is lost. I pass the Vampire HDMI out to a cheap dongle that converts to VGA and that goes into the OSSC while the Amiga RGB goes to SCART. Stellar picture on both outputs that I have spent more time tweaking than I care to admit, and auto switching in just over one second.

Nice! I did hear that the OSSC sometimes needs to be beaten into submission, but once you do, it can do awesome things. Clever way of doing it!
@one_b
@one_b 3 жыл бұрын
It just offers so much control and detailed settings it can be daunting I suppose but well worth the reading and understanding. Clean power from a good source is key for the OSSC to eliminate noise. It is very close to pixel perfect integer scaling in NTSC with full overscan on my Samsung 32in 4k screen. (240 * 9 is 2160, but the OSSC has a max multiplier of x5, so there is a tiny amount of blending.) PAL looks good too but 256 doesn't go quite as cleanly into 2160. I'm waiting to hear back on availability for the Raspberry Pi Zero adaptors for direct digital out from Denise to HDMI since an integrated solution would be optimal.

Hi, I guess I'm Amiga purist with the ambition to push my machine as far as it will go like you. I have had 2 A1000s, 2 500s, an A2000, an A4000T, and about 4 A1200s which I still own two a1200s now. One is in a tower with a blizzard 1260 (256K of ram) with addons galore like a keyboard adapter, a USB subway, a Gotek & floppy and a Mediator Board populated with a network card, a Radeon graphics card and a soundblaster card. So I get RTG from this PAL A1200 board which has been recapped. The other 1200 is is a large desktop case with just an ACA1233 @ 33 MHz, 128K ram, a USB Rapid Road, a sound MAS player from AmigaKit, Keyboard adapter, with a floppy and Gotek drive. I use that HDMI box to a monitor at present but I have ordered a TF1260 & 3.2 roms to upgrade. And a scandoubler for better graphics but it has no RTG graphics. Both run OS3.9 at present. My question to you is how is the best way to add RTG to the desktop 1200? Is a Vampire card the best (been waiting over a year now) or can I add something with the 1260 card coming? Really hard when most things are not available. The desktop is an NTSC amiga 1200. Thanks.

Happy to see I am not the only one using multiple switches to switch video modes but in my case its multiple switches to share monitors between Amiga's including KVM Switches but I have switches for just VGA and HDMI and thank god for Brother TZ Labels to help me remember what's for what. It will get even more interesting when I by a new 42U Server Rack just to place most of my Amiga in one location and no I will not be running all of them at the same time that would be breaker trip city. I have a Picasso IV Card in my A4000.040. I own 2 Vampires they are worth their weight in GOLD. I have a couple Acer Monitors which support 15kHz and while they are the same model they are different where one has a VGA port and the other DVI but both have HDMI and one has a VESA Mount and the other does not. Anyway I am rambling on but the biggest PITA with all this is Cables everywhere and none of my Amiga's are setup as a Toaster Machine.

@@10MARC Exactly. I thought it was cool to start stacking my Big Box Amiga's until its time to service one. This is why I have decided to get a 42U Rack and dedicate a shelf for each Amiga and neaten up the cables so if I want to work on one I can easily disconnect it and since racks have wheels they can be rolled out although not exactly easy. Even my current 15U Rack is heavy to move. I do think I want the shelves on rails so I can slide a unit out but shelves with rails is a challenge to find as typically the rails just attach to the servers, which is what I see but if I can find a shelf with rails without having to custom fabricate them I will be happy. I have yet to order the rack because I need to pick out a 30L Ultrasonic Cleaner to clean my boards since hand cleaning them takes way too long.

@@10MARC Amiga OS 4.1 FE with SP1 runs fine on my 4000 with Cyberstorm 604 as it contains native drivers for all the goodies such as Onboard SCSI and Mediator add-on Daughter board as well as RapidRoad for internet. I have struggled on installation on a A1200 using the 603 and 603+ Blizzard cards as believe it or not OS 4.1FE doesn’t support the 603e SCSI for installation from SCSI CD/DVD Drives!? You have to use IDE CD or DVD drives but have to be the first device before the HDD, then you can swap them back once installed. Once you have it installed it’s nice but again you are limited to software availability. You can run OS3 software such as Whdload and games etc.. But in emulation form as the 68060 CPU is switched off and everything runs on the PPC. To do that you have to use the RUNUAE software that comes with OS4.1FE. Does have neat features like you can auto update the OS and install patches etc.. For USB to work you still end up having to install the same Chris Hodges Poseidon USB driver software which is nuts. SP1 also supports the Indivision Big RAM zorro 3 256MB RAM cards as proper Fast RAM.

I use Telnet to connect to BBS's on my Amiga fairly frequently. DSTerm is a great program to use as a client. I have not set up a Telnet host on an Amiga, but I know software exists to do it. Here is a short list of Amiga BBS's - maybe the SYSOPS post on their sites which host software they use. telnetbbsguide.com/?s=amiga

@@10MARC Many thanks. Then I'll look in the boxes. Last week I was looking for a mailbox in German-speaking countries, but unfortunately none of them survived the Internet and there were so many of them. Frank... PS: If you like to drink German beer, my favorite is: www.passionvines.com/images/sites/passionvines/labels/erdinger-hefeweizen.gif I just don't know if this one exists at the end of the world. :-) :-) :-)

There's a user group nearby that uses Amigas with RTG exclusively. Hmmm...

Oh really? Which users group is that? Once I get a bit more time I want to make a database of active Amiga users groups.

Doug, your systems are beautiful, but I just cannot understand why you do not use crt monitors. I have tried many times to use newer monitors but they never seem to look at good. Each to their own ofc.

Too small, to much eyestrain. They don't capture well on film when I need to shoot them. And I use RTG most of the time. I hooked up a 17" CRT a few weeks back to my A2000 to see if I liked it. I kept it on for 5 minutes, got sick of the flickery picture, and literally threw it away. I do have a 1084 I use sometimes, and my Commodore 128D is hooked up to a 1902 monitor which I really like. My 1702 and 1802 monitors are used as previews on my Video Toaster.

@@10MARC -- one other concern with the tube-based monitors --- real estate on the workbench. If you can accept the difference in display from the CRT to a Flat, then you go from consuming tons of space to a shallow footprint. I eat the difference in display and have all flats.
