Welcome back to the adventures of John Oppenheimer in Fallout New Vegas. Yesterday we started playing, today we defeat the hardest enemies in the game

Fallout New Vegas is one of my all time favourite games, and I'm so excited to present the game like this. I've planned my character build in depth with the goal of pushing the power of my build increasingly to its limit as time progresses. The plan is to complete all DLC, and pick up increasingly powerful items and perks that will help us throughout the game.

Fun fact: Jas Wilkins most likely isn't a cannibal on purpose. When you get the cannibal perk (or the one to eat ghouls and super mutants), you can tell her that corpses taste good - and she will immediately react with disgust. Since the HUD telling you what you're looking at is a gameplay/pip-boy thing, she probably got the meat from a bad source and doesn't actually know that she's eating people. Either that, or she's a _very_ good actor, even when faced by a fellow cannibal. She's also the great-niece of a FO2 character!

I love the dichotomy of Dan. He'll play a game he has 400+ hours in and demonstrate super intricate knowledge of detailed subsystems, but also not notice the super obvious stuff like that in FO3 and NV you take out Deathclaw legs so they impotently and slowly limp towards you and can't use their deadly leap attack. Or that gamebryo doesn't have a split physics update and frame update, so he's playing at double (+?) speed.

RT should seriously consider getting the Yukagari Unofficial Patch since it nearly erases the game crashing. That and the anti-stutter mod. Edit: updated, based on responses, from NVAC mod to Yukagari Unofficial Patch

I'm curious as to how an anticrash mod could work, since generally when a computer program goes so wrong that it crashes, you _want_ it to crash before it causes more damage.

@@Blue-Maned_Hawkit just fixes the reasons the program would panic. It makes sense. Despite what you're saying, crashes aren't desirable and it's much better to, y'know, fix them

@@Blue-Maned_Hawk If I'm not misremembering how Gamebryo games work, one of the primary reasons crashes happen is because of invalid code loading in for a fraction of a second, and not enough time for the other end of the code to send it's response which causes a faulty exception and causes the game to shit itself and shut down. The anti-crash modders tracked down all of these instances and fixed them. You can still crash because of just general Gamebryo stability just not being able to handle certain things sometimes, but the anti-crash mod helps SO MUCH.

@@Creepernom Their point is that in the event where something does go really bad, then you might want it to crash instead of it continuing to spiral out of control. They're not saying to just leave bugs or problems in because "it's fine, it will cause a crash and all will be good." Of course if you just fix the thing that made it go bad in the first place, like the mod would, then crashes don't even enter the picture. The misunderstanding is that they're assuming the mod doesn't fix the things that would cause the crash, but instead somehow stops the game from crashing once something has gone wrong, which would be terrible.

@1:00 Dan brings back memories of my Fallout 2 "Pacifist" run where I finished the game and most locations' major questlines, ton of sidequests, etc with 0 Kills. No kill stat until the final boss who is a forced cutscene and always credited no matter how he's killed. I became a chemist who "healed" people to death by giving them Super Stimpacks (which caused small HP damage a while after being used). I would craft a bunch, heal someone as much as it took, get very far away and then hit the Wait button causing all the "recoil" from the Superstims to go off at once.

I'll be honest, having only played FO3 and 4 one or two times each, seeing a build capable of one-shotting Deathclaws terrifies me. Can't wait to see how much more destruction John Oppenheimer can bring to the Mojave Wasteland

3 and 4 are a lot easier to abuse into a build like that and deathclaws are a substantial amount weaker in those, so it's possibly even more impressive than you think.

@@cogbait Exactly, which is all well and good for Todd Howard's "see a mountain and go there" design philosophy, which I might add hasn't worked particularly well since Morrowind, but has the added effect of making the game very easy, making deathclaws no longer a really scary enemy, and totally ruining any structure the game's story and world might have had.

27:30 I do have to say that as a Critical Role fan, it's so funny to see all these diverse NPCs that Daniel interacts with in the game... and like 50% of them are voiced by Sam Riegel, Liam O'Brien, or Yuri Lowenthal. So fun to pick them out (also holy SHIT they have so many characters. Like 100 NPCs are just Yuri. Edit: Literally wrote this as I got to this point in the video, funny to see it pointed out as well

Watching RT discover in real time that every gamebro engine before 76 has it's physics engine tied to FPS was great. Though that does raise the question of if he's running any mods at all. He's obviously missing the Tick Fix because that also fixes the physics engine at high FPS, and he wouldn't be crashing this much if he were running New Vegas Anti-Crash and YUP

Deathclaw weakspot being the belly is a Fallout 4 mechanic. Headshots will do the most damage to deathclaws in 3 and NV. The gauss rifle (which the YCS is a unique variant of) is just bugged and does less damage in VATS.

This is one of my favorite games, and until this video I had never tried hardcore. I feel like this series is a perfect example that it really isn't that hard, and all the mechanics actually make the game feel a lot more fun. So, thanks, RT! Reminder that the legendary deathclaw is not the hardest/ strongest enemy in the game. The legendary bloatfly or x42 roboscorpion are. Side note, that roboscorpion is barely a fight, but screw that bloatfly , to quote the wiki “It has twice the health of the legendary deathclaw and deals nearly twice the damage.”

To communicate just how hard that Deathclaw hit, you have heavy damage resistance during VATS cutscenes.

Gauss cannons are bugged in VATS, their explosion effect doesn't trigger so they do way less damage

Dan found out that the Gauss rifle (and YCS) has a long-standing bug! If I remember the reason why properly, it's because of the explosion graphic that happens on-hit from its shots. Last I knew, the most reliable and effective way to deal with the bug without using Script Extender mods was to mod out the explosion effect.

the last time I played F:NV, I was a sniper with ED-E and Boone, using mainly energy weapons. I wasn't even a fraction as powerful as John Oppenheimer...I guess I never did get that hat.
