Us seafoods is about to give me a direct flight next week.... trident called to say they are not opening the plant I wanted to go to this year , false pass,... so I've got a 120 day contract with us seafoods in Dutch harbor aboard a vessel...I'll call the others to keep relations, and when this contract is over, if company doesn't retain me, I'll post up in Anchorage for a bit and do something temporary until the next oppertunity to get on seasonal. ... looks like a lot of work up there... and gold in them hills... it's a red state, and bigger than the continental us. Is there a winter season? What cannery did you contact? What are some good links. I also eventually wanna try to get on a crab fishing vessel
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree Жыл бұрын
Winter is a beast, if you really want to get started, I'd start with salmon in Alaska or any other fishery close to the coast in the warm months. In the winter, you'll get crab, but I can't understate the danger you'll be facing - physical and financial. You can make big money, but you could also lose it all because one dead crab inffected your whole fish hole while you were waiting to offload. Honestly, best way to get started is find a dock in an area you like, research what fisheries are in the area, and make a routine of walking the docks until you find someone who needs a hand. From there, you'll be in the circles who can tell you everything you need to know. You can learn how to start in Alaska from this channel, but I just went out there and gave it a whirl. You can too. I'd make sure you have financial security nets, whether its savings, family, or a supportive partner. You always run the risk of not getting hired or having a bad season. Go out there and let me know how it goes, I'd really love to hear.

I have two questions please. First, how would I contact my family with no cell phone service? Are there pay phones and do they take change or do you need a phone card? Second, how do you arrange for your flight home from Seattle after the season is over? Do you know in advance exactly what day you'll return to Seattle so that you can purchase a ticket over the phone? Thanks for your help!
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 5 жыл бұрын
Solid questions! As far as cell phone service goes there are pay-as-you-go phone plans you can utilize, GCI is a local phone service that works in Alaska, Verizon also does well in many places, but check their coverage maps on their websites so you know that where you are you'll have service. If you can't get phone service, Libraries are a great resource. I am at a library now in Cordova typing this to you on their computer. Libraries have free wifi and you will find one in every town. You won't know your exact last day of your contract BUT that doesn't matter usually because if you have signed a contract to work with the processor they will likely fly you back to Anchorage, Seattle, or anywhere in Alaska you need to be. Just make sure you specify where you need to be dropped off at the end of the season. Notify them well in advance if it is a different place from where they picked you up. Your flights to and from the cannery are going to be covered in your contract but double check with them during the interview so they don't try anything shifty and try to make you pay for it. Hope that was helpful!

¡Hola!

@@RTLivingFree What is the pay usually like for the offshore jobs? Where are the places to go to find work? Do you recommend jus showing up in a city or getting leads online? What months do the offshore jobs usually go during?
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 5 жыл бұрын
So, for the canneries the pay varies by the season, salmon season often gets minimum wage but I got a dollar more when I worked the herring season! I’d try and get in on a cannery in a non-salmon season and see if you could negotiate to keep your pay rate into the salmon season! The places to look for work will vary on the time of year you want to start because that will dictate which canneries can get you the most hours. If there’s no fish there’s no work, so go where it’s busy The internet info is spotty on where and when fish come but it’s a good starting point If you’re trying to get on a salmon boat and work in the spring you can do what I did and look for canneries in Naknek that we’re taking herring in late spring, it’s a short run but I still made good overtime. Then I took a plane to Cordova MAKE SURE YOUR CANNERY KNOWS YOURE GOIBG TO AN ALASKAN CITY WHEN YOU SIGN YOUR CONTRACT! they will fly you most places in AK, but if not they take you to Anchorage, maybe even Seattle. But only Seattle For canneries, get on a contract before you go if you want a free flight, but you’ll have slim to no chance of finding a fishing boat online. The captains don’t really use email so don’t spend too much time doing that unless you want to get on a boat helping tourists fish. Still good consistent money and a more relaxed lifestyle working for the tourists. But it’s usually worth the gamble on a fishing vessel (F/V) You won’t be paid by the day on a fishing vessel, you’ll be offered a crewshare. As a greenhorn, you’ll likely get an offer around 7-10%. 10% a considered a full share, but the captains that offered 10% to me were often not great foshermen, I got on a boat for 7% and left with more money than many of the local lifelong fishermen because I was on a reputable boat with an effective captain. I cannot tell you how much you will make. That will depend on your total weight of fish you catch, the kind of fish you catch, the price you get for get for the fish, and your crewshare minus any boat costs you will be told about before coming on the boat possibly including fuel and food. You can find a boat most times of year, but you will need to know where the Department of Fish and Game is allowing fishing and where the fishing fleet makes harbor. The internet will help, the locals will help more. If you’re looking for a long steady season, Cordova is a good place. There is a place to camp while you walk the docks. It’s called Hippie Cove, the locals can point you to it, everyone knows the place. Cordova is closest to the Copper River, where the first salmon run of the year happens. They will be open longer than any other fishery I can think of. Bristol Bay, where Naknek is, has the most intense and short season I know of, but you’ll be hard pressed to get on a boat as a greenhorn with no mechanical or engineering skills. They NEED to know you have fast hands to pick fish out of nets, and they don’t want to take a chance on you being slow handed AND useless beyond your fish-picking ability. There is so many variables to think about in making these choices itbis easy to get analysis-paralysis, the best thing you can do is: -have a disposable emergency fund if the adventure turns to a blunder or if you get hurt -find a cannery, any cannery -pick any fishing town in Alaska to travel to start walking the docks 1-2 weeks before the first opener is projected to happen -be ready to camp out for 3-4 weeks and walk the docks, stay up to date with the Dept of Fish and Game about when the first opened for the season will be. (An “opened” is a day that fishing is permitted by the Dept of Fish and Game -walk the docks for a boat to hop on anywhere that salmon will come. Tell everyone you meet that you are looking to work on a boat, ask if they know anyone. - if you’re not on a boat for the first opener, keep walking the docks until you need to pull the plug and bail. Often, greenhorns drop off boats for it meeting expectations, or fishermen get dropped for other reasons. YOU STILL HAVE A CHANCE IF YOU MOSS THE FIRST OPENER but your chances are greatly reduced. I hope I answered your questions well! What else do you want to know?

Then Silverbay seafood was supposed to give me an interview they took 1 look at me then hung up. It was supposed to be video interview.

Dam minimum wage is way lower over there, don’t even know if it be worth from California
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 5 жыл бұрын
Rene Garcia California does have a super high minimum wage, that’s part of the reason I’ve been contemplating working there for a week seasons, BUT if California isn’t your permanent residence you can make that money go far. The overtime really crushes it too. I know a guy in town now who made $24,000 in 3 months because of overtime here at an Alaskan fish processing plant

It's not so much what you are making, as it is about what you can save. That's how you have to think of it. California is also one of the most expensive places to live in regards to rent, gas or other expenses related to transportation, and food. That's where 80-90% of your check goes when you make money. So if you have your housing and food covered, and you don"t need a vehicle, just think about how much you can save.

How much money can I make in 60 days contract?
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 4 жыл бұрын
Man- i wish I had a good answer for you, but it's hard to say. It all depends on the fish, and where you are working too. Bristol Bay you'll get a lot of overtime for about a month, maybe longer. For roughly a month processing herring I made around $5,000 in Naknek during April. I can't give you a hard number for what to expect, it's always different. Working seasonally in the fish business is always a gamble, but often you can make good money out of it if you work hard. I wish I could offer more certainty, it's just not how the fish business works there. Hope I was helpful though!

That’s great! Cannery work might be a good place for you then. You will need a work visa to work on Alaska, but once you do an interview and get the job offer they will help you with getting your work visa! Canneries take a lot of international employees, I’m sure they would be glad to have you

What do you think of Alaska general seafood?
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 4 жыл бұрын
Just for clarification, is Alaska General Seafoods another cannery? I don't know them by name, but the experience of seafood processing is pretty similar across the board. I would bet that they do good on providing room & board, lots of coffee and food,, paying overtime, and paid travel. You have an interview lined up with them?

I have no personal experience with Alaska General Seafoods, but honestly the canneries arent very different between companies. They all work you hard, feed you well, and give you a bed to sleep in. I wish I could give your more intel, but there's not much to say about the differences. Did you get that interview?!
