I wish I would have done it in the early 80's when I was working in a place in Arlington Washington building Seiners and Gillnetters. Before that I worked at Kolstrand in Seattle's Ballard district in the warehouse and machine where we built all kinds of deck machinery and I had a chance to go crabbing but my wife said NO. Still wish I would have done it.

How are crew members paid after every season of catching salmon? What is the most a person can make in one season.

Hey buddy RTliving, don’t know you or how you’re doing nowadays but if your still doing the fishing jobs, if you need a place to chill and build wealth or just to wait in between check out Wichita Kansas, best city to make money in America especially coming from Alaska, or a great waystation until you figure out your next move. It’s cheap there and they have weekly hotels for $200-$250 a week. I’m a professional nomad who started out in Alaska fishing jobs but then I discovered better jobs with better companies who also send you to states like Wisconsin and Tennessee etc, including big cities like Charlotte and Nashville.

Question: you and another person I saw demonstrate this know both say “start by flipping the rope over to make a loop”. But, looking closely after you’ve done the next step - flying the end of the rope around this loop - you’ve “I flipped” the first loop you made. So, why is it necessary to make that loop in the first place?
@orngchkn
@orngchkn Ай бұрын
You don't. It's an unnecessary step - he "unflips" it by the time he pulls the other bight through the loop

It amazes me how many people walk around this earth with no gun with them to protect themselves what whatever this earth has to offer as a possible danger or threat I would never go to Alaska without a gun and it would be with every where o go from walking to the store to brushing my teeth. Have you heard of bears? They live in Alaska guns are probably the most effective tool to protect yourself against them. O yeah…Wolves!¿….

Is there a winter season? What cannery did you contact? What are some good links. I also eventually wanna try to get on a crab fishing vessel
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 11 ай бұрын
Winter is a beast, if you really want to get started, I'd start with salmon in Alaska or any other fishery close to the coast in the warm months. In the winter, you'll get crab, but I can't understate the danger you'll be facing - physical and financial. You can make big money, but you could also lose it all because one dead crab inffected your whole fish hole while you were waiting to offload. Honestly, best way to get started is find a dock in an area you like, research what fisheries are in the area, and make a routine of walking the docks until you find someone who needs a hand. From there, you'll be in the circles who can tell you everything you need to know. You can learn how to start in Alaska from this channel, but I just went out there and gave it a whirl. You can too. I'd make sure you have financial security nets, whether its savings, family, or a supportive partner. You always run the risk of not getting hired or having a bad season. Go out there and let me know how it goes, I'd really love to hear.

I heard some captains don't like that knot, what gives? 💁
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 11 ай бұрын
That's very true- this is not a knot to use for tieing a loop for everyday load bearing tasks on a boat. The knot itself is not a "true bowline" so it's more likely to slip or snap under high pressure. This is a way to tie a strong knot that can confidently lift a man or woman out of the water, but I wouldn't use this to tie off a boat or to secure a line that's being tensioned by a machine. Before you throw it to your friend in the water, give it an extra hard tug just to be extra sure it will hold. Great question, thank you for asking it!

That should be front and center in any video explaining something that's called a bowline but doesn't have its properties

@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 11 ай бұрын
Depends on your provider and depends where you are. I'll guarantee you won't always have reception. Most places you won't have internet. If you're in town, you can get wifi from libraries and some eateries, but all in all, if you need to be connected to the internet - this might be an uncomfortable adjustment for you. If you didn't already know, most streaming services like Netflix let you download shows and movies for when you're offline. If its just for entertainment and not for social media, then that might work for you!

Ryan how much did you make in 45 days.. the exact of 15K after texes
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 11 ай бұрын
Off the top of my head, I can't tell you exactly - but taxes didnt hurt that much. Fishermen can use the "per diem" tax deduction - originally made for truckers - but the deduction allows workers who need to live away from home to deduct a fixed rate per day from their taxes per day they were working. Since your expenses are low as a fisherman, you end up coming out with a major deduction that helps a lot. Also, in the Copper River, we were out there for plenty longer than 45days - Bristol Bay has a shorter and harder hitting season, but I was out for all of summer, some of spring, and some of the fall. That does include some pre and post season work too though.

Why wouldn’t you stay in Naknek for Salmon season?
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 11 ай бұрын
the wait was too long, and I didn't have the cash to stay in a hotel until the season hit there. I definitely thought about it though. Season hits earliest at the copper river, so that was where I could go and get on a boat the quickest. Less time living in the woods waiting for a bear to find me.
