The RGT Challenger EX86170 looks amazing on paper. An 8-channel radio (7 in use, 1 available) controls a host of features: 2-speed transmission, DIG, Winch and Lights. Front features 6.6% overdrive and there's metal where you want it, and plastic where you don't.
It's a thoughtfully designed machine. Heavy, yes, but tough enough to take a beating. It'll be a fun trail machine, but the question we have is how well will it crawl?
Let's test!

Brands such as RGT have really come a long way in the last few years. This model is full of interesting features and looks like a solid truck that has a well designed and built chassis. It's a total fun machine, to be sure! I love that they went with a 35T 550, it's just such a perfect brushed option for this rig. The wheels and tires are surprisingly decent, too. Just a great all round package. Did you find your transmission and diffs a bit dry on grease? I haven't checked mine yet, would be interested to know!

@@RCTNT portals and transmission gears had barely even a film of grease. The diffs were adequate. I live in a rainy area so I always pack the diffs and portals full of SuperLube. @@RCTNTyou mentioned you received a 3s Lipo? The one I received came with a hard case Sunpadow 2s 6200mah Lipo. Curious if it is different for the region it is being shipped to. As for the supplied Lipo I was very impressed with the quality since I am used to receiving NiMH batteries from RGT. Regardless that Hobbywing Fusion Pro on 2s rips! If you haven't tried one yet definitely do. I have been swapping them into all my crawlers. I respect the 35T 550 it came with and have other plans for that already.
@RCTNT

Hm it could just be the seller decided to include it, I really don't know. When I got the RGT Rescuer EX86190 on preorder, it came with a 6800mah 2S 25C hard pack, which has been great too. But this 3S pack was a new one, I'm happy with it so far. I've been using HW Fusion combos since they first released. I have several of the original 1200kv/40A ones, then the 2300kv/60A Pro units are sweet as well, and now they've rebranded the originals as SE and I've grabbed the 1200kv/40A and 1800kv/40A ones too. I love the AXE systems, both the old and the newer R2 combos (my 1200kv 540 AXE system powers my BC8 8x8, with a combined mass when hauling of nearly 50kg, and it still takes off up hill in 2nd gear, it's so crazy!). All that to say, the Fusion Pro may just be the pick of the bunch in most cases! Glad you're enjoying them :)

This is what the FTX Outback Texan could have been. The major issue for us in the UK, is getting it to the UK, and import duties!! AliExpress has it at £340, with free shipping, but who knows what the import duties would add on top!! I'm not a massive fan of the Power Wagon body, either. It does show what can be done with a RTR crawler, but, if I had one, how many of the features would I actually end up using?! A very thorough and thoughtful review though. 👍🏻

Great review, with the 6 problems keeping the testing consistent is a great approach. I do think this truck has alog of potential, would be great if you would develop it a bit and see if some of its shortcomings can be ironed out. Like someone said, filing the dig engagement gear, but also some different wheels and tires (maybe add some width for sidehill stability), use a smal 1500mAh Lipo instead of that big stock battery and remove the spare tire are some ideas that come to mind. Keep up the good work, really enjoy your vidoes!
@RCTNT
@RCTNT Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I'll come back to this one in future. For what it's worth, I did these tests with the same small 700mah 3s battery I use for all my rigs on the videos. The spare wheel doesn't add a lot of weight either. But you're absolutely right, and width in particular may well be a boon in this case. I wouldn't mind trying to make the rig a bit lighter, too. I'll think on it!
@77dxr

@RC-TNT to make ot lighter perhaps delete the winch, a All in one Fusion brushless system and then maybe delete the 2 speed... can't think of much more save for a custom carbon chassis

I could remove the spare wheel, too. Really, none of this really adds up to much. The big weight is in the axles, they really went to town making them heavy. The body is heavy too.

My capra's dig works that way too. I can't fully trust it to disengage all the time. I took it apart from the first install and did a quick file job rounding the edges,helping with locking in. May take it apart and do a more thorough job. You could try it and see if it helps.

Is the motor 3 or 5 slot? If it’s a 3 buy a 5slot it’s a significant difference. Holmes has em cheap on the sport line. Or I’ve tried the injora 550 Can 35t 5 slot and I’m impressed with it. Has bearings feels good like the Holmes do on the budget line. I like this rig a lot thanks for getting one
@RCTNT
@RCTNT Жыл бұрын
As you'll find if you look through our catalog of videos, the Holmes Crawlmaster series and the Reedy 5 slots feature prominently in many models. Great motors, love their smoothness. However, you can tell this is a 3 slot by its speed - a 35T 5 slot would be slooooow! Being a 550 and a 35T, this 3 slot is lovely and smooth. It can't match a 5 slot for low end smoothness, but the power it still grants makes up for it. I think this is the best budget brushed motor for this rig, honestly.

I’m kind of shocked I’ve been looking at these RGT’s & drooling over all the features but it appears even with all of those features it’s still not quite right. As far as crawling that is. The prices are pretty good considering all the features but here in the US RGT’s are not that available here. I like it & they have many models. I just thought it would do better on the rocks. Not sure if I’ll get one if they where more available I’d probably have one by now. Ya here in the 805 area of Ca. We are officially a disaster area lots of rain & some flooding lots of road damage & parks & our local lake got hit pretty hard but it’s nice to see everything green lots of fresh clear water coming into our lake & it’s made for awesome ares to go out & crawl or trial run. Some ares are just huge rock fields & the streams have nice ares to crawl by. I’ve lived in this area all my life & haven’t seen this type of flooding & damage in years. It’s both good & bad. Things are settling down & things are getting little by little back to normal. But ya it’s Super fun out with the Crawlers.

Hm, there's a new kind of normal for weather and that's anything but how it used to be. The intensity dial is getting turned up bit by bit, so there'll be more of this in future. Not a fan of the "power wagon" style, but this one isn't the worst looking one (looking at you, ECTO!), but you'd think with that aesthetic and features, it'd be more competent out of the box. Yeah it isn't bad. A firmer rear would help support it in the steeper climbs but it's about right for most stuff, at least with the 700mah 3s battery I ran in this test. I would like to stand those rear shocks up a bit though!

Intriguing features, great review- thank you! The price though appears to be quite close to Axial and Traxxas crawler prices. @RCTNT

RGT is fast becoming a more premium brand in price and thankfully their quality is improving too. Parts haven't been an issue, historically. You can get the bits for most models on AliExpress at least, plus variously on banggood, Asiatees and eBay/Amazon. What you'll break, if you break anything, will be motors, servos and links - nothing model-specific there. It's snapping axles or diff gears that'll wreck your day. These are usually readily available online, for whatever that's worth.

I've had my RGT 86010 CJ for a couple years. No US that I've found, although I haven't looked hard. I've had no problem getting parts from any number of stores on AliExpress. I've ordered main gears(grandson treated it like a basher), and a couple link rods and drives haft for when I lengthened it to 313. Bot really, crawling, I haven't broken anything mechanical. Just body parts. I've added a Quicrun fusion, and locking portal axles, and am still under what I would've paid for a Traxxas trx4. It doesn't have 2 sp. Tranny, but crawling, it stays with my buddy's trx4 blazer, and looks more scale in the running gear.

Hey hey, yes in fact I have worked it out! Watch this video, it's the first thing I discuss at the start of the video. If yours isn't working, maybe your module isn't responding to radio input. You can test this by connecting your 3-mode light module to the steering servo channel and then turning the wheel each way to see if the lights respond. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/icqeoqd9nKrFYYU.html

You've tried it on the steering channel? If so and it still isn't responding, the issue is with the light module and not the radio. Check to be sure it does actually respond to radio input and not just to a switch, getting only power from the radio but not needing a signal. That'd be my first guess.

I am wary of RGT products. They look good as most Chinese copy’s do but their quality is lacking. I bought an RGT 1/10 Bronco V2 RTR a year an a half ago. On the second battery the front axle shaft sheared off. I contacted RGT using their only contact info. They wouldn’t warrantee the part. I couldn’t find the correct replacement part unless it was shipped from China. I finally silver soldered the axle myself and kept on running it. Then in a few more batteries the rear diff plastic spool stripped out at the axle because the plastic was too soft. Should of been a harder resin plastic! I am a senior gentleman that has had r/c‘s since the 90’s. I have and still own alot of different r/c brands. I can’t believe the lack of quality and integrity of the RGT name! Spend about the same and get a Traxxas or other reliable & superior r/c vehicle. Maybe you could use that winch to help you unlock your rear diff before the winch breaks! 😂😂
@RCTNT
@RCTNT Жыл бұрын
Oof, that's no good! I have a lot of RGT products and so far I've had two breakages. The first was on the Pioneer on the main shaft from gearbox to transfer case, which broke while in the hands of someone I lent it to at a comp. Just a little plastic thing. Second breakage was from the Challenger, just last week, when I had the rear axle puking comp duty on my performance scale rig at ECCF interstate. My DIY link riser tore the composite bracket apart. In normal use though, where I've been using the cars as designed, I haven't had any problems. I'm sorry you have, that would be enough to put me off any brand. Fwiw, RGT is considerably cheaper here in Australia than other brands, partly due to proximity and trade arrangements with China and partly due to USA companies like traxxas and horizon brands simply costing a lot more here than in the US. If I was in the USA I think I'd be sticking with traxxas and horizon brands too.
