Baseball history is FULL of wacky characters, and perhaps one of the wackiest of all was a guy known as Rube Waddell. From gator wrestling, chasing fire trucks mid-game, and his notorious drunkenness to his legendary baseball skills and knack for saving lives, Rube Waddell had one hell of a life- and one hell of a criminal record too. My grandfather was called Rube even though his legal name was John. I didn’t hear about the “gullible country boy” meaning until I was in high school. That meaning definitely could have fit him, since he grew up on a farm. But now I like to think that his parents were Rube Waddell fans, and decided to nickname their 3rd child after him. The timing checks out.

Jacksonville resident here, the team being named the Cummers is in reference to the once powerful and wealthy Cummer family, whose Riverside mansions have since been converted into one of the best local art museums. I volunteered there in highschool! Also, Jacksonville in general was really interesting around this time; being the railroad hub of Florida and a major port, it had a really diverse population and the Lavilla neighborhood was known as the Harlem of the South. The first use of the word blues, Ray Charles' first performances, a Beatles concert that the band had to nearly boycott to have integrated, James Weldon Johnson and many other critical artistic moments from American history happened here, primarily in a neighborhood that was bulldozed in the 90s.

Basically anything Manny Ramirez did would also count. One of my personal favorites: one time while he was playing with the Red Sox he left the field and went through a door in the left field wall to take a piss mid-game: there isn't a toilet back there, but in his words he "figured it out." His family didn't know he played baseball until they saw a segment on the news about him being drafted to the minor leagues straight out of high school. He named both of his sons Manny Jr. The channel Baseball Doesn't Exist did a video on him going through the major highlights of his career, and it's too insane to be fictional.

Baseball at the turn of the 20th century had a tendency of giving players increasingly cruel nicknames - players from the country were called "Rube" (regardless of their gullibility), hefty players were called "Fatty" or... um... I did not expect a video about baseball to be so thoroughly entertaining. It got pretty sobering toward the end there... but then you HAD to go and say he died on April Fools. What a man. What a character. What a story.

As a baseball fanatic and history buff I was familiar with this story. What’s intriguing is that it shows up on this channel. EXCELLENT job of telling the story from a “every day” perspective. That perspective might be out of context however. There’s a lot of drudgery in the lifestyle of athletics, and much more so back then, when they played all day games. Those guys had decent money for their time and free evenings. Added together with the varying educational accomplishments of these guys and you ended up with a lot of characters. Babe Ruth was nicknamed “Babe” because he grew up in an orphanage and never went anywhere until he got out of the orphanage at age 18. The first time he was in a hotel he rode the elevator all day for fun. Good job with this story and the channel

My dad really loves baseball and got me into it as a kid, and man some of the stories, especially in the older days are super wild. Like just looking into Babe Ruth’s life is a pretty good ride haha. Also funny enough my dad pitched for his baseball team growing up and still pitches now and is ambidextrous, throwing mainly with his left! It’s funny how many pitchers are left handed.

I absolutely live the incredulity of Victorian-era customs...I mean, people would come up to you and "smash" your cute lil straw hat cause it was winter hat weather time. Also that headline "Bares Heards from Battery to Bronx" man it really was an innocent time huh
