David Rubenstein, Carlyle Group co-founder and co-chairman, talks about Ruth Porat's rise at Alphabet where she is now the president and chief investment officer. He also talks about his bid to buy a controlling stake in the Baltimore Orioles baseball team that values the franchise at $1.73 billion. Major League Baseball still needs to approve the deal. Rubenstein is part of a group of investors that includes Michael Bloomberg, the founder and majority owner of Bloomberg News parent Bloomberg LP, that is trying to buy the team.

I love how Rubenstein answered the question about companies purchasing sports seriously.

When sports are broadcast in the metaverse the value of owning teams will go way up. NBA and NFL will see the most impact IMO. Google may realize this is one way "in". We may see more megacaps looking to buy teams if they believe this future.

Putting a finance person (aka a bean counter) in a senior leadership position at a technology company is one of the ominous signs of the grim reaper at the tech company. See Xerox, see Intel, see Yahoo...and I'd also lay a lot of the same disease at Boeing's feet as well although not thought of as a "tech company". There is nothing wrong with behaving responsibly financially when it comes to any publicly traded company, but firms built on innovation and competing in an innovation based business simply can't make every decision based on ROI or NPV. Intel for example, turned down getting the iPhone business because the calculated NPV wasn't positive enough when their CEO was a finance guy instead of an engineer or tech guy. That was a collosal, enterprise killing decision for Intel. I wish Google well but now that they're putting bean counters in very high places, especially bean counters who were born and bred outside the tech industry, this is not a good sign.

if you are piling up money, why are you laying people off?
@KForrestBeats

A company laying people off does not mean financial difficulty. Instead this can be viewed as much more of a conservative approach. Down sizing or removing areas of the business which are unprofitable or unproductive is a more likely reason.

Ruth was a disaster at Morgan Stanley. Insiders will tell you that. So she decided to go to a monopoly with equally ineffective management. The two founders with Schmidt built a solid platform that has kept them going for so long. But every monopoly ends at some time. And particularly quickly with low quality “professional managers”.

Alphabet needs new management, Sundar Pichai missed the boat on multiple trends espially on AI and Cloud Computing. They should be the leader in AI and Big Data given the massive amount of data pile they sit and regarding Cloud Computing Azure and AWS ate their lunch and kicked them in the stomach. d

Google stock price was $30 in 2015 it’s up to $145. I would say Sundar has not been bad at all.

What you see in the headlines shouldn't be your entire impression of a company if your intention is to be a serious investor... there are many obvious advantages both AWS and microsoft enjoy against GCP (ex. nobody is competing with amazon's well established array of decent cloud services or microsoft's entire os/app ecosystem). Playing catch-up against AWS would have been a very expensive gamble and I don't think avoiding that was necessarily a bad decision. You may remember that Microsoft bought yahoo to play against google and it ended up being one of the worst deals in history. Now google has an ad monopoly that is arguably comparable to AWS in terms of ability to generate cash. People are going ballistics over the potential for google to lose a few percentage points at the absolute most in search traffic. This isn't going to hurt the ad monopoly in the slightest and will probably in actuality be as impactful for microsoft as GCP is for google. Google absolutely did not miss the bat on AI, in fact before microsoft partnered with OpenAI they were falling far behind. A lot of the core OpenAI staff actually defected from google. In my opinion it's impressive that they managed to come up with the chatbot, but it's mostly just hype for wall street to trade and speculate on. The chatbot is very interesting but not a particularly lucrative use case in the longer run and google retains the lead on many more practical research directions.

@@02nupe In my opinion, stock price should not be the indicator to judge the CEO. Google was a well-established brand with a great tech team and great products and services even before the new CEO came in. But what is missing is if you compare it with other big tech is that Google seems to miss on multiple trends 1. Cloud 2. AI 3. Devices. Sure the stock did well but it was because of their already great search engine. I just hope it does not go the IBM, Cisco or Intel route.
