I hope that down the road we can also discuss how the combinations of these treatments are detected - they are rarely used independently of each other. Also oiling (with or without color in the wax/oil) is very common as well.

+gemmyme Good suggestion. While most of the Sapphire treatments are used independently there is a growing number of synthetic gemstones hat have multiple treatments applied. A good example is the quench crackled synthetic Ruby. As for oil in Sapphires there was some research at the end of last year indicating that there was a small number of Sapphires with oil in the cracks. It is still undetermined if this is residue from the cutting process or if it s used to enhance the stone.

Hi there, thanks for this informative video. Could you please give some detail information on how to heat treat rubies with some blue or purplish shades in it. I want to remove the blue color so they can turn out red. If I can get complete detailed process of heat treatment I will really appreciate
@GemRockAuctions
@GemRockAuctions 7 жыл бұрын
The actual heat treatment process is a highly secretive formula. Lots of testing and destroyed gems have lead to the knowledge and it is not shared
@hasslefree1848
@hasslefree1848 5 жыл бұрын
There is no short explanation...lol ...............With that look as you have described, there is a good chance that Ruby will turn more Purple.....Commonly, the Violet or Blueish secondary color seen is caused by Titanium Oxide present in the corundum....Titanium Oxide is what is responsible for the Blue color in Corundum and namely Blue Sapphire....If Titanium Oxide is present in the other colors of Sapphire or Ruby then that is not a good sign........ When you heat the material, the Titanium Oxide reacts and wants to turn Blue and a varying degree of Blue color can or does develop and mixes with the Red or Pink base color and you end up with a Red / Purple or Purple / Red / Pinkish color while the tone or saturation can also turn too dark....sometimes or often enough. If you recognize the source of the material, it can be test heated at say 900 to 1000 degrees Celsius and often enough that lower temperature will drive off the Violet / Blue look ...but, not always and no assurances in a (single piece ) as it is a matter of percentages and relative to hundreds or thousands of pieces from the same source and how some of them or a "percent" will improve in color and with some, nothing happens or not much happens and then some can or will grow worse in color with heat. If you also see the look of sleepiness or cloudiness or a silky looking effect and seen in the Corundum, then often enough and commonly that is Titanium Di-Oxide formation and trapped within the crystal lattice structure which exists in the form of nano sized Rutile crystal formation occurring in relative abundance and creating a light scattering effect resulting in the sleepy or cloudy or silky appearance. ...If you do see that sleepy look then you know for sure there is Titanium Di-Oxide in the material and when you heat that material at temperatures high enough to dissolve or melt the Titanium Di-Oxide, which effectively starts at around 1200 degrees Celsius and up, then the Titanium reacts to the heat and creates the development of Blue color, in a manner of speaking, and after heating you have a percentage of the stones that have turned decidedly more violet color to a decidedly purple color and a percent have turned dark purple.......because of Blue color development occurring and the blue color is mixing with the original Reddish looking or Pink / Red base color.......At the lower temperatures of around 900 to 1000 degrees Celsius, the temperature is not high enough for most sources of Ruby or corundum to be considered reactive to heat, concerning color development or increases in color .......In most source cases, the Titanium Oxide that is present or commonly can be present in corundum needs temperatures above 1000 degrees Celsius and considered hot enough for the Titanium to react to the applied heat....so...in some sources the slight violet or purplish color can be eliminated or significantly reduced over all at those lower temperatures of around 900 to 1000 degrees Celsius ...as there is a difference between "color development" as compared to the reduction or elimination of undesirable secondary colors ....But, if the material is also sleepy or silky looking and you want that sleepy effect to be removed then you have to go up to the temperatures where the Titanium, in the form of Titanium Di-Oxide can be "dissolved" or "melted" to eliminate that hazy or sleepy look and you will observe that the sleepy look can be eliminated or reduced ..but, you also witness a growing percent of the stones are turning more violet or decidedly purple after heating at the higher temperatures above 1000 degrees and starting effectively around 1200 degrees Celsius ...Some sources of corundum more so than others sources will change easily from a pale to medium pinkish /reddish / slightly violet original color and having a uniform degree of "sleepiness" seen throughout the stones and considered very heat sensitive............. When heated at temperatures as low as 1000 degrees you see the increased violet or purple color beginning to occur and then at 1200 degrees half the stones are turning decidedly deep purple and some are deep blue / purple looking and then at 1400 degrees all of them are dark Blue / blackish Blue and have an opaque tone of overly deep color saturation ...and .....some of the silkiness remains when you check the stones for elimination of sleepiness......so....there are problems , problems.....and then some other problems....... Cheers

How much time blue and yellow and pink sapphire need to heat
@hasslefree1848
@hasslefree1848 5 жыл бұрын
Depends on several factors...but usually within 24 hours....but some burners are learning they can obtain favorable results with some low end material sitting at temperature for days or weeks to months in a some source cases and improve the colors

What happens when heat treatment goes wrong, do you have any examples of these
@hasslefree1848
@hasslefree1848 5 жыл бұрын
Happens all the time....Depends on what source the Corundum comes from and the quality of the material and several other factors......Pink slightly violet color Sapphires can turn dark purple or even to Black Blue color while a lot of Blue Sapphire will turn very dark blue to Black and totally opaque after burning....with some sources of material the color is lost and can not be recovered.....A lot of the corundum material is contaminated and when you heat the material it turns Opaque and whitish and basically made much worse than before burning ...at temperatures as low as 500 degrees Celsius.......Heat can be good or heat can be bad for the stones ........Not all and not all that much of the various sources of Corundum respond well and resulting in significant improvements in the quality when heated

Is there a premium for a non-treated ruby & Sapphire.....?????
@GemRockAuctions
@GemRockAuctions 8 жыл бұрын
+Ross Echols There sure is. Non treated stones used to fetch about 50 - 60% more in price but with the growing demand for these types of stones the premium could be 300%. Typically for Sapphires you are looking at a 80 - 100% premium and for Rubies it can be much higher. This is of course assuming all other factors are equal (color, size, cut)
